South
African soccer fans and their media will make you laugh your lungs out at times
when they choose to. As if country wide celebrations of a quarter-final
qualification by Bafana Bafana back in January were not enough, something that
even Parliament celebrated as if we won the AFCON itself, now we have again, in
a very short space of time, Orlando Pirates fans and some media celebrating
group stages qualification like they have won the CAF Champions League itself.
Like
Kirsten Nematandani and Fikile Mbalula did with Bafana Bafana in January,
Nomvula Mokonyane and Kirsten Nematandani have done the same to Orlando
Pirates, for merely qualifying for group stages while Esperance in Tunisia,
Zamalek and Al Ahly in Egypt, Libolo in Angola etc know exactly that its only
the beginning, here in South Africa it’s a different case. What a country of
failures, content with mediocrity and underachieving always resting on their
under-dog self acquired status. What a laugh, I’m sure they are also laughing
at us.
I
also couldn’t believe it when the South African media and its fans complained
about what happens every day when you visit those African countries while it
was all flowers and roses when Collins Mbesuma got a dubious penalty at Orlando
Stadium, which effectively gave Orlando Pirates a passage to the group stages,
that fact is conveniently ignored but cries are all over the place about
penalties no one saw but only those that were wearing Orlando Pirates
spectacles saw.
Orlando Pirates have achieved nothing in this year’s CAF Champions League, our media are blowing their mere qualification for group stages out of proportion and it’s embarrassing to say the least. It’s not even funny. Then someone wonders why back door qualifications by Bafana Bafana to tournaments are also celebrated in South Africa.
