Wambach Named 2012 Women’s World Player of the Year

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 | Wednesday, January 09, 2013

It's been an incredible year for the U.S. Women's National Team co-captain.

Nike athlete Abby Wambach was named the 2012 Women's World Player of the Year on Jan. 7, selected by the coaches, team captains and select media from around the globe. Wambach was voted ahead of runner-up Marta and teammate Alex Morgan.

Wambach's win marks the second U.S. Women's National Team member to win the award following Mia Hamm's selection in 2001 and 2002. Wambach is also close to catching Hamm on the world's all-time scoring list as she currently has 152 career international goals with 27 of them coming in 2012.

Wambach was the only U.S. player to start all 32 games last year. She scored in 20 of those games and finished the season with 198 career caps -- and, of course, a gold medal.
