Let's
get things into perspective; some of the views from the football fraternity
leaves one gasping with shock and disbelief.
People
need to know that a football club is not a charity organisation; its purpose is
not to assist the state in its failing welfare policy... the reason for
football's existence is largely for entertainment and to varied extent, for
social and commercial means...
One
then needs to ask, why do "followers" expect teams like Kaizer Chiefs
and Bloemfontein Celtic to offer longer contracts to the likes of Tinashe
Nengomasha (former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder)
and Moses Spandeel (former Bloem Celtic
midfielder), if the teams deems it’s not necessary?
The
fact that he is good or spent about ten years at the club doesn't mean they owe
him any favours. The same applies to the likes of Thabo Mooki, who are owed no
benefit matches, if the team sees no need.
Football
is a career like any other supplied by professional commercial organizations… have
you heard that a Sanlam employee has been given an extra contract upon
retirement for serving for 45 years? Are there special favours or positions
given to those whose services are no longer required?
Why
then should we expect football to downgrade its professionalism to satisfy the
cries for loyalty? Unless you are Lucky Lekgwathi (Orlando Pirates captain), you
must know that loyalty doesn't pay.
A
perfect example that treating a football team like a charity organisation is a
recipe for disaster is the circuses that are taking place at Chloorkop on a
daily basis...yet, some air-filled fans, which always criticise Mamelodi Sundowns
expect other teams to adopt similar approaches... shocking!
