The
Premier Soccer League supported by Stadium Management and Mamelodi Sundowns
today laid criminal charges against some individuals who were involved in the
crowd violence during this past weekend.
This
follows Sunday’s Absa Premiership fixture between Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi
Sundowns where a faction of supporters behaved in an unruly manner.
Five
charges were laid at the Dobsonville Police Station against supporters who
initiated and participated in the crowd violence. The charges are: malicious
damage to property, entering designated area illegally, throwing of dangerous
objects, failing to comply with the lawful request or directive given by the
police official or security officer and engaging in a delinquent or anti-social
behaviour inside the stadium.
The
PSL submitted supporting documents to the Dobsonville Police Station from
various stakeholders including a report from the private security company,
Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows.
SAPS
spokesperson, Kay Makhubele confirmed that an investigative officer has been
assigned to the case.
PSL
General Manager of Safety and Security, Phillip Masimong said the charges are
based on the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act 2 of 2010.
“Today,
we successfully opened a criminal case against these individuals. We are hoping
that before Friday, the police would have made the first arrest. We promised
that we are acting swiftly, firmly and decisively on this. We handed evidence
to the police that I hope will help in their process,” Masimong said.
He
alluded that close cooperation with the SAPS is vital in the PSL’s efforts to
curb crowd violence.
Still
and video images will be submitted as part of the evidence to the police.
Mamelodi
Sundowns Senior Legal Manager, Yogesh Singh said: “Our priority is to bring all
these misbehaving people to justice.”
