I’m very disappointed with the way the Confederations Cup is been promoted in South Africa especially after moving around the host cities these past weeks. Joburg, Pretoria are a joke; Durban is another sad story and PE is just dead!
I’ve seen more elections posters, lotto posters and the new Indian Cricket League (DLF IPL) posters than the Confederations Cup. The DLF IPL is more advertised than our Confederations Cup (websites, newspapers, billboards and TV-ads). It shows that these guys (Cricket) mean business and not holding on the money.
How on earth can this happen while we host the biggest soccer event eMzansi? Soweto has these cheap Confederations Cup posters. No ideas were put into designing them and people can’t really feel them. In Germany when you hit the airport already you felt the vibe (remember that bridge of Oliver Khan?) - Yes!!!
Mara what is happening in that LOC office? Where are the BIG billboards of our players (Teko, Khune, Benni or Pienaar) advertising at (airports [I don’t mean that Visa or Kaka ad], bus stations, taxi ranks, train stations, schools, clinics, and TV-ads)?
I fear the same laziness when it comes to promoting the World Cup after the Confederations Cup. Cheap billboards and late newspaper ads will come on the 1st of June 2010. I was going to be very ashamed if I was part of this project and to claim to the people that the marketing is good is even a disgrace on its own.
Maybe these guys should move around and check all the host cities and ask people if they feel the vibe. I’m sure the answer will be a big NO.
