Mamelodi Sundowns followers (fans) are calling on club boss Mr. Patrice Motsepe to bring back former Kaizer Chiefs defender Neil Tovey as the head coach of the Brazilians.They want Tovey to replace the Frenchman, Henri Michel, who had to be escorted from Super Stadium by police following their 1-0 Nedbank Cup defeat to Platinum Stars on Sunday.
Who is Neil Tovey?
Tovey is a former Mzansi footballer and now working as the assistant coach at AmaZulu F.C. He is a former captain of Bafana Bafana, and in 1996 became the first white player to raise the African Cup of Nations trophy. In total he won 52 caps for the national side without scoring a goal.
He played for the mighty Amakhosi (Kaizer Chiefs) becoming a very important player for the club. He has set several records for the club, including most capped player and most starts in a season: 52 in the 1992 season.
Following retirement, Tovey went into management. He and Miguel Gamondi were appointed co-coaches of Sundowns and guided the club to the Premier Soccer League title in 2006, only to be axed when the Pretoria club made a faltering start to their defence.
