Adidas, the leading global football brand, today launched the newly designed Orlando Pirates Home and Away jerseys for the coming season.

The launch takes place on the eve of the Vodacom Challenge, which kicks off on Saturday.
The range consists of two new designs: a Home Jersey (black/white) and an Away Jersey (white/black).

The red alternative jersey has been carried over from last season and will be used as an alternative jersey.

The new Jersey continues to reflect the club’s black and white heritage with a touch of red added from the shoulder to the collar and underarm –an innovation that was successfully introduced in 2008.

A Tiro design has been adapted for this new range to reflect the tradition of the Soweto giants by emphasising the famous skull and crossbones-which is emblazoned onto the back.

“Flash a badge with a skull and crossbones on it at almost any South African and they will know you’re talking about Orlando Pirates. This is a symbol which is intrinsically woven into the fabric of South African football history. I want to thank adidas for being able to bring this concept to life in our new home and away jersey.

“From now on wherever our supporters go, they will have 72 years of proud Orlando Pirates history and heritage accompanying them every step of the way,” said Bucs Marketing Manager, Nkosana Khoza.

The jersey was designed using the Tiro template –the same template used in the design of the Spanish national team jersey –following consultations between adidas and Orlando Pirates.

“We are excited by the new design of the jersey and we hope the Orlando Pirates faithful will embrace the new jersey and wear the club’s colours with pride.

We also hope the players will be inspired by the new jersey to reach greater heights this season. As we say at adidas: Impossible is Nothing,” says Zobuzwe Ngobese, the public relations manager at adidas South Africa.

The jersey, designed and manufactured by adidas, also features innovative ClimaCool® technology.

“ClimaCool® is an adidas patented combination of performance fabrics consisting of open mesh and ventilation channels which keeps cool air flowing in and heat and sweat flowing out. It allows athletes to stay dry and comfortable and perform at their peak.

With ClimaCool® apparel, athletes can keep their focus right where it needs to be - on the game” says Kevin Jooste, adidas Category Manager for Football and Team Sports.

The players will wear the 2009/2010 Home jersey for the first time in their opening match of the Vodacom Challenge against English Premiership side Manchester City on 18 July at Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane.
