Ubumnandi
FC, from Umlazi Township in the East Coast of KwaZulu – Natal, were officially
crowned the East Coast Regional champions of the 2013 Carling League of
Champions following a hard fought victory over Blues FC this past weekend. It
was still goalless after full time and the outcome of the match had to be
decided on penalties, which ended 7- 6.
As
one of the rookies in the tournament, the Durban based outfit should be proud
of their achievements as they will represent their region in Johannesburg in
the Finals Weekend, on 19 & 20 July.
Should
Ubumnandi FC emerge as winners of this competition, they will walk away with an
all-expenses paid for trip to watch Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs on July
27th.
The
two Soweto giants will lock horns in what promises to be a mouth watering derby
at the FNB Stadium.
Team
coach, TC Bakithi, is thrilled that the side has made it through to the next
round. “The boys played brilliantly throughout our qualifiers and they exceeded
my expectations. They are already looking forward to playing the finals,” he
said
“We
wish to thank Carling Black Label for the opportunity. It would be nice if we
were to win and get to see Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at the FNB
stadium. A derby is the most respected event in the soccer calendar.” Bakithi
concluded.
Meanwhile
in Eastern Cape, Red Eagles from Plettenberg Bay also booked their place in the
finals play-offs in a similar fashion as Ubumnandi with a 3-1 victory over XI
Attackers FC, via a penalty shootout.
Further
deep in the Cape, Franshoek United surfaced as Western Cape regional champs and
completed the round up the finalists with a solid performance in their 1-0
triumph over Phinda Mzala All Stars.
