Down Memory Lane – Orlando Pirates

The 1997/98 - It was the second season of the newly formed Premier Soccer League (PSL). Mamelodi Sundowns finished on top with 68 points scoring 48 goals and conceding 25 while runners up Kaizer Chiefs had 63 points scoring 52 goals and conceding 35 goals.

Orlando Pirates, Cape Town Spurs and PSL Inaugural Champions Manning Rangers all finished up with 57 points, but Pirates took the 3rd spot because of superior goal difference after scoring 52 and conceding 33 goals.

The Bob Save Super Bowl:
Defending Champions Pirates started on a high to defend their cup beating Manning Rangers 4–2 on penalties after a 3–3 thrilling 1st round encounter. They beat Chiefs 1–0 in the second round and thrashed SuperSport United 3–0 in the quarter-finals.

The semi-finals were interesting as they met Jomo Cosmos who had also won 3–0 in the quarter-finals beating Vaal Proffesionals and were also finalist against Pirates in the previous season where they lost 1– 0.

It was the repeat of the previous year as Pirates beat them 1–0 again to set up one of the thrilling Bob Save Super Bowl final against Sundowns. Raphael Chukwu drew first blood for Sundowns and Captain John Moeti equalised for Pirates and the game ended a 1–1 draw after extra time.

In the replay Sundowns drew first blood again in the first half of extra time and the evergreen Sam Pam cancelled the lead in the dying moments of the game. The defending champions eventually lost 5–6 on penalties.
