2012 Carling Black Label Cup Surpasses All Expectations

The 2012 Carling Black Label Cup addedanother chapter to South African football history, breaking records and providing unforgettable memories for Champions Coaches across South Africa.

Orlando Pirates retained the title they won in the inaugural event in 2011, defeating Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs 5-4 on penalties after the teams had played to a thrilling 1-1 draw. The match was played in front of a record crowd of 92 702 at Soccer City, a great testament to the passion and popularity of South African football.

The spectacle provided a superb start to the 2012/13 Premier Soccer League season, with the involvement of the fans at record levels as they demonstratedtheir eagerness to ‘Be the Champion Coach’.

Over 20-million votes were cast for the starting line-ups of both teams; double that of 2011.The match itself was exhilarating as Kaizer Chiefs took an early lead with Abia Nale handed a rare start for the Amakhosi, as a result of Carling Black Label consumer involvement in the game.

It looked as though the Naturena side would hold on to their advantage until BenniMcCarthy sent the game into a penalty shoot-out deep into injury time.

It was the Buccaneers who held their nerve to outlast Kaizer Chiefs 5-4, with Ndumiso Mabena netting the vital kick.

Although the day was really about the consumer coaches and their selections, Stuart Baxter of Kaizer Chiefs and Augusto Palacios from Orlando Pirates said they were impressed with the choices made and delighted with how the match had gone.

“When we returned for pre-season, I told my players to forget about winning the treble and that we needed to start afresh and focus on the next trophy.

“We want to win everything and this is the perfect start. We had a strong team out there that was chosen by our fans, and players like Sifiso Myeni and Mark Mayambela had a chance to show that they deserve to wear the Pirates shirt.

“For us it was very good preparation for the new season and for the fans it was a very good day out that I believe they enjoyed,” Palacios said.

His oppositionnumber at Chiefs, Baxter, was also pleased that some of the players who did not get to see regular action last season got a run-out in such a prestigious match.

“I think there was a lot of pride between the two teams. I was pleased to see that.. If you look at the starting XI, there were a couple of choices made by the supporters who had an opportunity to showcase their talent. Abia Nale did well, especially offensively. Tefu Mashamaite settled in well. They obviously staked a claim for a more regular starting position and in a sense raised their shares, if I can put it that way, Baxter said.”

One interesting aspect of the evening was the decision of the consumer coaches to replace both goalkeepers just past the 50-minute mark. This substitution was audited by Grant Thornton.

Fans had spent the first half of the game voting for who they would like removed from the game and decided that Itumeleng Khune of Kaizer Chiefs and Moneeeb Josephs of Orlando Pirates would come off.

It was a smart move in that both players are virtually guaranteed a starting position in the new season and the supporters are well aware of their attributes. It made more sense for the fans to leave the outfield players on the pitch to give them more game-time ahead of the new campaign.

It was also a wonderful night out for Kaizer Chiefs fan Wilson Mbatha and Orlando Pirates supporter Lazarus Moeng, who got to sit in the respective dug-outs of their team.

These two lucky supporters had spent time with the teams in the build-up to the match. Once the action was underway, they were active in sending out messages from the bench, adding to the consumer involvement in the game.

“The 2012 Carling Black Label Cup was a stunning success, both on and off the field, and has laid a platform for even greater things next year. “Records galore, glitz and glamour on the night, it was a Champion experience from all involved with the Champion beer and the Carling Black Label Cup,” Andrea Quaye, General Manager of Carling Black Label said.

The culmination of the campaign will be the Coach the Coaches workshop conducted by the former Bafana Bafana tactician, Pitso Mosimane scheduled for the first week of September in Johannesburg.  Further details will be provided in due course.

MTN and Premier Soccer League (PSL) renew ‘vows’ for three more years

MTN South Africa today reaffirmed its long-standing investment in local football when it announced the renewal of its sponsorship agreement with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) as the headline sponsor of the MTN8 competition, which has extended for three more years until 2014.

The much-anticipated tournament will see the top eight teams from last season commence battle to claim the R8 million – winner takes all prize – on the weekend of 03 August 2012. In keeping with the competition rules from the past season’s tournament, the PSL has confirmed that the top four teams from last season have secured home ground advantage in the quarterfinal stages.

“It is crisp, competitive and most of all, it is engaging. It is a season’s opener high on talk time. Cup competitions don’t come better than MTN8. Like a catwalk is to fashion revelation, MTN8 provides a platform and opportunity for supporters and fans to see the revelation of players for the new season.” commented PSL Chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza.

The tournament, best described by its payoff line: ‘WAFA WAFA -Winner takes all’, is the richest Cup competition on the continent which features the top 8 teams from the previous season’s Premier Division league action. MTN8 has gained popularity with the Last Fan Standing (LFS) competition, a franchise that has become a feature landscape for South African football fans during the tournament.

In announcing the decision, MTN SA’s Chief Marketing Officer, Serame Taukobong, said: “After a successful and mutually beneficial partnership over the past four years with the PSL, which has benefited local football and invested in numerous social upliftment projects, amongst a number of notable achievements, we saw it befitting that we continue to invest in local football development in the country and while connecting fans with their passion for the beautiful game  through epic football tales and unique competitions.”

Reigning MTN8 champions, Orlando Pirates, will host the opening quarterfinal match against Bloemfontein Celtic on Friday, 03 August 2012 at the Orlando Stadium at 20h00. The following day SuperSport United host Free State Stars at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane at 15h00.

Sunday will see two thrilling encounters when Moroka Swallows welcome AmaZulu in Dobsonville at 15h00. Mamelodi Sundowns will square up against Kaizer Chiefs at the Loftus Stadium in a 15h00 kickoff.

“We look forward to celebrating many more milestones during this tenure and would like to thank the PSL for entrusting us with the custodianship of this exciting knockout cup competition,” concluded Taukobong.

Western Cape Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup Provincial Finals Postponed

The Western Cape Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup provincial finals will now take place on 1 September at the Rustedene Stadium in Beaufort West.  The postponement is to accommodate the Muslim month of Ramadan as many players will be fasting during the month of August.

The winners of the six regional finals will participate, namely Central Karoo, Eden, Overberg, Cape Town, Cape Winelands and West Coast.

Qhayiya Secondary School from Hermanus, representing the Overberg Region, will be making their third appearance in the Provincials, but have never gone on to play in the National Finals.  Seventeen year-old team captain, Monwabisi Tim, believes his team will make it to the National’s this year: “We’ve learnt a lot last year in terms of how the different regions play and, with the full support of the technical team as well as the teachers; we have the confidence and drive to go all the way to the Nationals.”

Qhayiya’s coach, Mike Gwaxa, has been with the school team since 2006. He says that the four players in the team that competed in last year’s tournament will help, but he cautions that his team’s fitness might let them down. “It was self-belief that let us down last year. Playing teams like Beaufort West Secondary School and Bastiaanse Secondary School can be intimidating as they have won the tournament before.  I am working on fitness at the moment to get the players to peak at the right time.”

Looking forward to the provincial finals is Thembalethu Secondary School’s player from the Eden Region, Goldman Jwili:  “This will be the first time we will be competing against the best under-19 teams in the Western Cape and we are going there with confidence, but will not take any opposition we face lightly.”

The 17-year-old captain believes that the schools fromGeorge have exceptionally talented players and he went on to say that his school has a better than average chance of winning as they are regarded as underdogs.

Also joining the two schools is 2010 Nationals Finalists; Bastiaanse Secondary School (Central Karoo). The school finished 16th that year.

Cape Town, Cape Winelands and West Coast are still to host their regional finals.

Banyana Banyana looking to leave the Olympics on a high

The South African Senior Women’s National Team (Banyana Banyana) will be looking to leave the Olympic Games on a high note, when they take the challenge to World Cup champions Japan in their final Group F fixture. The match will be played on Tuesday, 31 July 2012 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

Kickoff is at 14h30 (15h30 SA time).

Despite defeats to Sweden and Canada, captain Amanda Dlamini’s team will leave the world’s greatest sports showpiece richer in football experience. This could prove to be of major value as they prepare to put in a bid to lift the CAF African Women Championship 2012 title in Equatorial Guinea in October this year.

The results in the first two matches mean Banyana Banyana will not progress to the next round.

But the sports world will remember the team for the superb strike from 45 metres out by forward Portia Modise which resulted in South Africa’s historic first goal in Olympic Games women’s football history. This was in Banyana Banyana’s 4-1 loss to Sweden on Wednesday, 25 July 2012.

Japan, ranked No 3 in the world, go into the match against South Africa at the back of Group F outings which saw them record a 2-1 win over Canada and a goalless draw against Sweden.

“We are looking forward to the match against Japan, as our styles are similar in that they like to keep and play the ball on the ground and so do we. We had hoped to do well in our opening two matches to stand any chance of proceeding to the next round, but it was not to be and I would like to applaud the whole team for giving their all. We have one match remaining in the competition and we are confident we can come with a positive result even though we know it won’t be easy,” said Dlamini.

“On behalf of Banyana Banyana, I would like to thank SASCOC, SAFA and our loyal sponsor Sasol, for all the support that they have given to our team and it was a privilege to be a part of Team SA at the London Olympics. We have learnt so much from these two games and we hope they will put us in good stead when we challenge for the AWC title later this year.”

Chiefs and Pirates tactical and technical blunders in the CBL Cup final

Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates - The determination of pre-season games is to fine-tune the tactics and techniques which also include finding right combination before the commencement of the Premier Soccer League season by experimenting new and old combination of players. Over the weekend we had another big game in the calendar of Mzansi diski. We had a spectacular game between South Africa’s biggest teams. The game was played in front of almost 93 000 fans.

Kaizer Chiefs looked set for a win as Abia Nale goal inside the first 10 minutes looked as though it would be enough to seal victory but with just seconds remaining on the clock, Ever-shining Benni McCarthy jumped higher that towering defenders Mulomowandau Mathoho and Morgan Gould to send the games to penalties shootout. Eventually, Pirates won 5-4 to claim second CBL Cup in a row.

The Benni McCarthy last seconds goal brought back the memory of the 26 May 1999 during the UEFA Champions League Final at Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain.  Bayern Munich lost UEFA Champions League in the referee’s optional time (injury time) after leading 1-0, but in the 90:36 with 2 minutes and 24 seconds to go, Manchester United scored an equalizer through Paul "Teddy" Sheringham and again at 92:17 with only 43 seconds to go, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the winning goal for Manchester United to clinch UEFA Champions League trophy in the last 3 minutes of the injury time.

Indeed ain't over until the fat lady sings is a colloquialism, essential meaning that one should not assume the outcome of the match until it has actual finished.

Coming back to Carling Black Label Cup, it was an exciting and eye-pleasing pre-season derby game between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, but I noticed some few technical blunders that needs to be rectified going forward from both sides.

Orlando Pirates tactical and technical blunders
- Pirates build up from the back was too slowly going forward.
- Both left and right wings were ineffective in the first half which lead to insufficient balls supply upfront to Benni McCarthy and Thulasizwe 'Juju' Mbuyane.
- Pirates lost most of its attacking balls in the last quarter of the field.
- Poor aerial ball anticipation and lack of pace thereafter by Bheki Nzunga exposed Pirates at the back which lead to Chiefs goal.
- Oupa ‘Ace’ Manyisa and Andile Jali played apart from each other which affected the famous Ace and Jali functioning like a well oiled machine.

Kaizer Chiefs tactical and technical blunders
- The attacking force of Chiefs was non-existed as Bernard Parker played too deep leaving Lehlohonolo Majoro ineffective alone upfront.
- The forced change of speedy George Lebese by Siyabonga Nkosi didn't change the complexion of the game as Nkosi lacks pace going forward. He is a good ball passer but in modern football, pace is an ingredient of complete creative player.
- Playing same 3 players in the middle-of-park Reneilwe 'Yeye' Letsholonyane, Josta ‘JD’ Dladla and Siyabonga "16 valve" Nkosi limited Chiefs attacking and its ability to play from the wings. There trio are good ball players but lacked blistering pace to trouble Orlando Pirates defence.
- After scoring a goal, Chiefs was defensive protecting the lead and the intention of defending was solidified when Abie Nale was replaced by Keegan Ritchie instead of effective winger like Mandla Masango. I wonder what was the Stuart Baxter's motive to implement defensive tactics in a pre-season game. Parking a bus is alien tactics to Chiefs but a normal tactics in British football. Remember Chelsea parking a double deck bus against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League last 4.
-  Elapsing of concentration by Chiefs defence in the dying minutes of the game cost them the taste of the Carling Black Label Cup. The famous words of former Chiefs coach, Paul Dolezar started to reverberate in mind when he described his defence last minute blunder against Mamelodi Sundowns in Rothmans Cup final of 1996/1997. "One minute to go, one mistake, one million is gone, it is a criminal". He uttered those unbelievable words live on TV in the final of cup competition dubbed "it’s unbelievable"

The least said about the penalties the better. Penalties are like Lotto… unpredictable. I won't comment about Andrea Pirlo look-a-like penalty and also Sergio Ramos look-a-like missed against Bayern Munich.

Overall Carling Black Label Cup performance
12 substitutions made in the second period affected the flow of the game as it was never managed to live up to the buzz of the opening 45 minutes.

Ratings - 7/10

Open letter to Kaizer Chiefs supporters and management

We have note with shock the impatience of some sections of supporters claiming to be belonging to Kaizer Chiefs after the unlucky and unfortunate defeat to Orlando Pirates.

These supporters who are originally from Umtata Bush Bucks, Manning Rangers, Vaal Professionals, Dangerous Darkies and Seven Stars were quick to forget that the Carling Black Label Cup was a pre-season tournament aimed at preparing the team for the upcoming season.

We had a better first half and Pirates kept on chasing shadows until George Lebese got injured and everyone including this fly by night fans was happy.

Towards the end of the game the coach tried some players out (Keegan Ritchie at left wing and Lincoln Zvasiya at right back) and it all looked good as Tlou Segolela was neutralised. All was well until Benni McCarthy elbowed Zhaimu Jambo towards the end of the game and he had to be treated for about 2 minutes and we just lost concentration from that corner kick and the rest is history.

The unfortunate part is some of these fans from teams who no longer exist after the game came out guns blazing labeling our coach as a clueless fake. I need to remind these supporters that we started that game without 3 key members of our squad (Mulomowandau Mathoho, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Kingston Nkatha). Fact of the matter is we still need some few players in the team.

Bobby Motaung has tried his best but we still need Tsepo Masilela, Erwin Isaacs and Lehlogonolo 'Vieira' Masalesa. Siyabonga Nkosi is not convincing, we need Masalesa to hold things together with Reneilwe 'Yeye' Letsholonyane spraying out those passes.

In conclusion, without fear or favour all those who call our coach clueless must know that they are not welcome in our team. They can join a team of their choice.

Cloetesville Primary School wins 2012 Nestlé MILO Champions Tournament

Cloetesville Primary School emerged as Provincial Champions at the sixth provincial final of the 2012 Nestlé MILO Champions Tournament this past weekend at Steenberg High School in Cape Town, Western Cape. Cloetesville Primary School beat five other schools from across the province on Saturday, 28 July and will go on to represent the Western Cape at the National Final in September.

Nestlé MILO in conjunction with the South African Schools’ Football Association (SASFA) has been hosting the U13 schools soccer tournament for the past five years.

The Nestlé MILO Champions Tournament is not just about developing the soccer skills of these young stars. It is our goal to educate the youth during their formative years about the benefits of leading healthy and active lifestyles.  We are extremely proud of how seriously these children take the sport and the tournament itself, and the positive impact it is having on their lives,” says Kelly Wainwright, Nestlé South Africa’s Marketing Manager for Beverages.

Cloetesville Primary School will receive R10 000 to invest in an initiative which is in line with Nestlé MILO’s values of Nutrition, Health and Wellness. They will be able to use these funds to improve the sporting facilities or buy sporting equipment for their school.

At the end of the season, the school that is crowned the overall tournament champions in September will receive an additional R150 000 to invest in a similar initiative around their school’s sports and wellness infrastructures.

“Youth development, through sports is one of the biggest means of positively impacting and inspiring the lives of young South Africans in this country. It is a dream come true for all of us at SASFA and at Nestlé MILO, to see how far the tournament has come as we commemorate its fifth year of existence” says Mandla ‘Shoes’ Mazibuko, President of SASFA.

In an exciting development for the 2012 tournament, former Bafana Bafana and Charlton Athletic player, Shaun Bartlett has come on board as the new Tournament Ambassador.  Bartlett, who enjoyed a successful local and international football career for 15 years, remains dedicated to his passion for the beautiful game by running his own children’s football academy in Johannesburg.  The nine provincial champions can look forward to meeting Shaun Bartlett at the National Final in September.

Mamelodi Sundowns is not killing players

Since the signing of Edward Manqele by Mamelodi Sundowns I have observed how negative was the feedback from other supporters teams on different platforms more specifically Kaizer Chiefs supporters.

Some labeled that as career suicide by the player in question and they went as far as labeling Sundowns as a serial killer and there was even an article that went as far as blaming Sundowns for Bafana Bafana's failure as it said they bought all the talent and benched it.

Well my opinion on the matter is that this is nothing but sour grapes and people are impartial. I remember when Hlompho Kekana joined Ka Bo Yellow the same utterances were made and I am happy to say they were proven wrong.

Surprise Moriri's move attracted same utter when he was scooped from Silver Stars, but he went on to be a Sundowns legend. The same serial killer managed to revive careers of Godfrey Sapula , Teko  Modise, Lebohang “Cheeseboy” Mokoena, Mpho "Gift" Leremi and Katlego “Killer” Mphela just to name a few . I put the blame on football dynamics, all team have signings that work for them and those that don’t.

Kaizer Chiefs killed Mthokozisi Yende, Josta Dladla, Abia Nale, Jose Torrealba and at Orlando Pirates Clifford Ngobeni and Phenyo Mongala didn't shine there . Even Steven Pienaar was a flop at Tottenham Hotspur, but in an Everton jersey he is a Diego Maradona.

Sandile Ndovu was said to have been killed by Sundowns but how many more teams did he fail at afterwards. Even Thulani Serero is struggling to make the first team at Ajax Amsterdam but we saw a glimpse of an exceptional talent in his last game for Bafana Bafana.

Football as a sport is a competitive game an only the top 11 per team can play at a given time. People must stop being emotional and live with their disappointments.

Banyana Banyana look to put nerves behind them against Canada

The South African Senior Women’s National Team (Banyana Banyana) will be out to prove that they have shaken the nerves of the first match and show that they are not just in London to make up the numbers. Banyana Banyana faces Canada in their second Olympic Group F fixture in Coventry on Saturday, 28 July 2012.

Kickoff is at 14h45 (15h45 South African time).

While nerves may have got the better of the South Africans in the first 30 minutes of their opening encounter in their 4-1 defeat to Sweden earlier this week (Wednesday, 25 July), captain Amanda Dlamini’s charges must now have settled into the Olympic mode, and need a win to keep alive their hopes of a place in the next round.

Banyana Banyana’s final group fixture will be against FIFA World Cup champions Japan on Tuesday, 31 July in Cardiff. The Canadians will be just as anxious to secure points, having gone down 2-1 to Japan in their opening Olympic Group F fixture.

“We have seen a bit of Canada in action when we participated at the Cyprus Women’s Cup in February this year and have an idea of what to expect,” said Banyana Banyana captain and midfielder Amanda Dlamini.

“The nerves of the first match are now behind us and we hope to do our country proud when we face Canada on Saturday. It’s a great experience for South Africa to play at this level of women’s football, being the first time that our senior women’s national team has qualified for the Olympics since our team was formed in 1993.”

The South Africans have had a solid build up phase to the Olympics since outplaying Zambia, Tunisia and Ethiopia in home and away matches to book their place – along with Cameroon – as Africa’s representatives at the London Olympics.

Thanks to the firm support of Sascoc, SAFA and Sasol, Banyana Banyana were conditioned in lengthy training camps and played several international friendly matches. They also participated in the Cyprus Women’s Cup as part of their preparations for their Olympic Games debut.

Banyana Banyana outplayed Zambia 6-2 on aggregate to book their place at the CAF African Women Championship 2012 which kicks off in Equatorial Guinea at the end of October.

Apart from being the sponsors of Banyana Banyana and the Sasol League in South Africa, Sasol is also the sponsors of the Team SA Olympic and Paralympic teams in action in London, enhancing their support for upliftment through sport.

Letter to the transfer listed and released Orlando Pirates players

It is undoubtedly very disturbing for you to be listed as the unneeded players in the Orlando Pirates squad and with due respect, I share with you the sadness and bitterness but truthfully none of you was a regular lately and it was a good blessings for your careers to start over elsewhere.

Dikgang Mabalane
“I really have a huge respect for you as you played your professional player role very well with less or no bad news being written of you by the media which makes you one of the fewest or the Luckiest as we all know South African media in the relation to bad news…good luck with your future end overs man.”

Lizo Mjempu
“You are one of the talented players who I am not so convinced were good enough for the Buccaneers taking consideration the number of chances you were given but pity you couldn’t stamp your authority…good luck in searching for a new team… hopefully Mvela Golden League teams are eyeing you as I think you are too good for Vodacom League teams”

Talatou Boubacar
“I really haven’t seen you play at all which suggest you are either not good enough or just a practice match material as an exceptional player would have at least won himself few substitute appearances so I predict you are going back home.”

Njabulo Manqana
“You are one of the players who are said to be very talented but the fact that Pirates signed you from the bench at Arrows worried me and the fact that Pirates released you without utilizing you removes a doubt in me that you are overrated as I don’t really know you but I am sorry. I predict that you will be wearing a jersey number 00 at no team just like Jury Merahe who experienced the same fate as you. At least you have a league medal unlike other players in the Premier Soccer League”

Chiukepo Msowoya
“You were very lucky not to be released ahead of Ezenwa Otorogu back then as I bet you failed in the Premier Soccer League in general. Just consider going back home as I have a feeling Tuks won’t sign you as whispered my sources.”

Lucas Thwala
“Look Around… eish I am short of words to you Sir, but I know you are an exceptional player who shined in our drought era contributing nothing significant as far as success is concerned at Bucs so like I said, it is sad to see your back as you leave… good luck”

Overall I urge you all not to let your bitterness force you to slam Bucs in the media as that may be your downfall if you really hope to proceed with your careers. I hope the money you will be paid as a result of being transferred as well as signing of fees can be enough to help you pay the debts you may have made hoping your good contracts with Pirates was going to run through so avoid debts next time.

2012 Nestlé MILO Champions Tournament

The 2012 edition of the Nestlé MILO Champions Tournament goes to the Western Cape this weekend, when the sixth provincial final takes place at Steenberg High School in Cape Town, Western Cape on Saturday, 28th July.

After an exciting tournament last year, Nestlé MILO in conjunction with the South African Schools’ Football Association (SASFA) is excited to host the fifth edition of the U13 schools soccer tournament this year.

The battle for this year’s provincial honour to represent the Western Cape at the National Final in September will see six primary schools from around the provinces’ six districts face off against one another on Saturday.  The six schools that will be participating in the provincial final are: Teske Gedenk Primary, Nomlinganiselo Primary, Phakamisani Primary, Cloetesville Primary and Parkview Primary Schools.

While Saturday’s event promises a lot of on-field action, the Nestlé MILO Champions Tournament is so much more than just a football tournament. By using the platform of sport, Nestlé and SASFA are determined to educate the youth during their formative years about the benefits of leading healthy and active lifestyles while highlighting the positive benefits this has on other life skills.

In light of this and in an exciting development for the 2012 tournament, former Bafana Bafana and Charlton Athletic player, Shaun Bartlett has come on board as the new Tournament Ambassador.  Bartlett, who enjoyed a successful local and international football career for 15 years, remains close to his passion for the beautiful game by running his own children’s football academy in Johannesburg.

“Shaun Bartlett is the ideal Tournament Ambassador, because in addition to his outstanding sporting career, he embodies the very ethos that we at Nestlé are trying to instil in the youth – that of leading a balanced and active lifestyle, while valuing the benefits of a healthy and nutritious diet. We are very happy to have him on board and I’m sure all the participating schools will be very excited about it too,” says Kelly Wainwright, Nestlé South Africa Marketing Manager for Beverages.

The Western Cape school that will be crowned Provincial Champions on Saturday, will receive R10 000 to invest in an initiative which is in line with Nestlé MILO’s values of Nutrition, Health and Wellness. The winning school will be able to use the funds to improve the sporting facilities or buy sporting equipment for their school.

In addition, the overall Nestlé MILO Tournament Champions for 2012 will receive R150 000, to invest in a similar initiative around the school’s sports and wellness infrastructures.

“We wish the best of luck to all the participating schools in the Western Cape this weekend and hope that win or lose, Nestlé MILO and SASFA have not just changed the lives of all youth participating in the tournament by developing their football skills, but also promoted within them, a culture of living a healthy lifestyle,” says Mandla ‘Shoes’ Mazibuko, President of SASFA.

Kaizer Chiefs are destroying players!

In this group (Pure Football Experts........) we've had our healthy disagreements as to who kills players ko Premier Soccer League, Mamelodi Sundowns will forever carry that stigma and Orlando Pirates closing that gap. The common thing about Pirates and Sundowns is, they do their duplications of signings and let the players fight for their positions "fair and square"! We have even gone as terming this talent suffocation a "football phenomenon".

We can’t help but notice ukuthi Kaizer Chiefs now have a new trend, beside already in use: "one per season". The new one is, if you are 30 in their team you are as good as gone and should you be kept till maybe 34 then your God is good. We've seen Thabo Mooki, Arthur Zwane, Gerald Sibeko, Fabian McCarthy, Cyril Nzama, Patrick Mayo, John "Shoes" Moshoeu and now recently Tinashe Nengomasha - all being dropped like hot potatoes or forced to early retirement.

Mind you these players were a force in their back to back league success in 2004/05 and 2005/06. Nengomasha was offered a lousy 2-year-deal extension at 30 plus a one year "in the office" contract, this means his playing days must be over at Naturena at 32. Bare in mind we are not talking about any South African typical lazy player here, this is a Rhodesia and by nature these people has an excellent work ethic plus he is rarely injured and all his 13 years at Chiefs, he has never cheated Chiefs.

In the team's defense Bobby Motaung (football manager) tells "us", we must remember he (Nengomasha) is not a youngster, my question is how old is Reneilwe 'Yeye' Letsholonyane, Siyabonga Nkosi and Morgan Gould?

We all know there are no guarantees ukuthi Yeye will finish this season without spending time ko physio (physiotherapy) room and Nkosi is not as tough as they come because to give the Kaizer Chiefs midfield a nod, you need to look at what Pirates and Sundowns have as they are their direct competitors.

In conclusion, this whole Nengomasha saga was not looked at in totality. Yes he is 30 (a young man when compared to Paul Scholes), he could still cover more ground even at 33 with rate he is going. He lives a clean life and that should give him even a longer staying power in the game and he is fashionably available for team selection.

In Italy I'm told they even take players in their 30s to some scan where it tells more or less how long could a player still play hence you see most of the over 30s playing in Italy. In South Africa we desperately need that scan, poor Siyabonga ‘Bhele’ Nomvete and Benni McCarthy, their good work the past season has gone unnoticed in some villages of the country.

The Naked Truth: Orlando Pirates is slowly but surely killing talent

Recently soccer fans probed the soccer wisdom of Mamelodi Sundowns adviser(s) to Patrice Motsepe regarding signing every player available in the market without assessing the players need in the team. Player needs assessment is imperative to recruit appropriate and useful players.

The same scenario is now occurring at Orlando Pirates. Orlando Pirates' greedy and selfish players recruitment strategy will end the careers of many players. Orlando Pirates just like Sundowns are slowly but surely killing talent of players.

Both teams are forever signing players that they don't use. Njabulo Ntusi, Njabulo Manqana and Talatou Boubacar, Lizo Mjepu were signed last season by Orlando Pirates but now are transfer listed without playing sufficient games. Before, Orlando Pirates released players like Robert Modiadia, Getulio Vargas and Speke Manamela without touching the ball in an official game.

Now the rookie players signed from lower divisions such as Hlabane Kutumela, Patrick Ngidi, Patrick Mashele, Benjamin Nthete, Aubrey Ngoma and Thabo Rakhale are available for loan. History taught me that loaned players don't make it back at Orlando Pirates. It’s only Tlou Segolela who is enjoying sufficient game time since coming back from Celtic on loan.

Orlando Pirates has balance and quality team and there is no necessity to add more players that won't add value to the team.My advice to Dr. Irvin Khoza, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

adidas and Chelsea 2012/13 Third Kit

adidas today unveiled the new third kit for Champions League and FA Cup winner Chelsea ahead of the 2012/13 football season. The kit, designed by adidas, is a striking combination of flaming ‘sun’ yellow and black ensuring that Chelsea stand out on the pitch in the style stakes as well as with their football prowess.

The kit also includes the iconic adidas three stripe detail through the arms and a strong fading graphic to the façade of the chest. The sun yellow colour may look familiar as it has adorned many Chelsea kits since the 1960s but looks more striking than ever in this modern and sharp design.

The striking sun graphic on the front of the black shirt creates a contrast in colours, giving the impression of power, while the fade in the graphic represents speed. The Chelsea badge is black and white and stands out against the sun graphic.

The 2012/13 shirt features adidas’ cutting edge TechFit™ technology to help improve speed, increased endurance capabilities and enhanced awareness. This works by stabilising and focusing the muscles’ energy to generate explosive acceleration and deliver maximum power output.

The shirts also feature adidas ClimaCool™ technology, a mixture of heat and moisture controlling materials, ventilation channels and 3D fabrics which improve air flow to the skin in the key heat zones. Sun coloured mesh panel also feature on the sleeves of the shirt for better breathability in core sweat zones.

Mr Price SPORT and MAXED Unveils Free State Stars FC New Kits For Season 2012/13

Mr Price SPORT and MAXED confirm their partnership with the Free State Stars FC

Mr Price SPORT and the MAXED brand are proud to announce their partnership with the Free State Stars Football Club. The new deal, which was officially announced last night, was warmly welcomed by Free State Stars General Manager Rantsi Mokoena.

"Free State Stars Football Club would like to express its gratitude and appreciation to Mr Price SPORT and MAXED for their decision to join the exciting football industry through entering into a relationship with Free State Stars. We would like to welcome you into soccer and we trust that the next three years will be filled with excitement and great success between the two companies."

Mokoena said he knew that the MAXED kit would be a hit with the players and supporters of Free State Stars.

"We are proud that we are the first professional soccer team to wear the MAXED product. MAXED have developed a high-tech jersey for the team and the players cannot wait to wear it in their first game against SuperSport United in the MTN8 cup competition."

Mr Price SPORT Managing Director Clint Larsson said the partnership heralded a new era of involvement in South African football for the Mr Price Group.

"It is an honour and privilege for Mr Price SPORT to be associated with a great football team such as Free State Stars who have established a long and distinguished legacy in South African football.”

"We trust that our Mr Price SPORT core values of passion, value and partnership will be reflected in our sponsorship of the Free State Stars FC and we look forward to assisting the team to achieve their soccer dreams."

The announcement marks the progression of the Mr Price SPORT MAXED brand into the professional football scene, with a sponsorship presence having been put in place at a development level for a number of years.

In 2004, the Mr Price High School Soccer league was launched in Mitchells Plain in the Cape, with its subsequent success leading to the expansion of the exciting initiative to seven provinces across South Africa, involving over 4000 learners from 164 schools.

The successful league led to the Mr Price Group and the Red Cap Foundation being presented with a Sports Development award in 2009, with plans now in place to see the Mr Price High School Soccer League establish a presence in all nine provinces.

Preparations are already underway for the next league to be launched in the Free State.

A number of young participants have already gone on to play football professionally and now the opportunity exists for them to one day turn out for the Free State Stars.

Mokoena acknowledged that the involvement of Mr Price SPORT in football was going a long way to inspiring future sports stars.

"The decision to sponsor Free State Stars will go a long way in helping to develop the youth of this country and bettering the lives of ordinary South Africans through sport. Mr Price SPORT's involvement in soccer will play a big part in the creation of jobs, in the promotion of a healthier South Africa through the participation in sports and most importantly in helping to unify all South Africans.

And now there is every reason to believe that the ‘Stars’ will continue to sparkle on football fields throughout South Africa for many seasons to come.

United Need Three More Players If They Wish To Compete

Last season Manchster United were minutes away from “delaying” their neighbours first Premier League title. The look on Ferguson and the players faces as the news came in that Sergio Aguero had scored in final moments was priceless, it also showed how precarious success and failure is in football; one kick of the ball can change history and in the case of Manchester, even create a power shift.

In the aftermath of that final game, and I am sure before it, Alex Ferguson must have accepted that his side were not as good as their rivals. One cannot ignore the money that has been injected into City in such a short time, yet relatively speaking it is money which United have used in order to dominate English football for so long. Yet last season perhaps for the first time in decades, yet perhaps not the last, the blue side of Manchester was better in all areas than the red side.

Last summer was supposed to be a massive one for United in terms of transfers, embarrassed against Barca, United needed investment and improvement. City had just won the FA Cup and were clearly a side on the rise, whereas United, who although champions and Champions League finalists, were showing their frailties in certain areas.  With the retirements of leaders like Van Der Saar, Neville and Scholes, United were losing a lot of experience which as last season showed, was dramatically missed.  United needed to replace these players and improve the squad, and with £60 million, the kitty was not small. However, poor decision making meant that £60 million was wasted and the intention of building for the future. However, this logic is somewhat flawed for several reasons.

£60m wasted?

Firstly, bringing in a young, foreign goalkeeper not used to the English league or language was always going to bring a difficult period. And De Gea made mistakes throughout the season which cost United valuable points in the league and meant their Champions League run was cut emphatically short. It was a risk, and one which in United did not need to make. Lessons from previous attempts to replace goalkeepers must have made Ferguson aware that experience is key for success to occur, in this purchase he failed.

As too he did with Ashley Young. At £17 million he was not cheap, and when you consider that players like Mata were purchased for slightly more, it would have been better for United to purchase a younger and better player, than one who had failed to convince fully even at Villa. Although Young made some good impressions at United, he is too much of a fairweather player, who lacks consistency and too often is not seen or heard from in important matches.

Finally £20 million went on Phil Jones, a player with much potential, yet unproven, ill disciplined tactically and as the season has shown, has much to learn to be a top player at United. The truth is, while City were buying Aguero and Nasri (who United went for yet he chose higher wages and the chance to win things at City) United were spending too much money on unproven players. This is not a policy which will lead to success, especially when your closest rivals are purchasing genuine world class talent. It was therefore no surprise that City won the league, what was a surprise was that it was so close, credit to Ferguson and also criticism of Mancini for that, yet the truth is that City deserved it, they played better throughout the season.

Improvements needed

Ferguson must have known throughout last season that his side were not good enough, going out so early in Europe and playing so averagely throughout the year could not have told him anything but, and the return of Scholes indicated as much. And so this summer expectations were high in regards to his ability to go and get top talent to improve the squad. After wasting £60 million last season, it was key that the signings this summer would show City and rest of Europe that United were serious about returning to the top of English football. And yet, with only a matter of weeks until the start of the season, United have brought in only one top talent and another with just potential. Again he appears unwilling to address the issues which have plagued United in the last couple of years.

Shinji Kagawa is a top player and has proven this in the past couple of seasons in the Bundesliga for Dortmund. Improved and guided by his previous manager Jurgen Klopp, Kagawa was a major factor in Dortmund winning back to back titles. His movement, speed and skill are all needed for a United side who have regressed tactically from a fluid attacking side, to a more rigid crossing side, where although successful against many sides, it is when up against the best sides where United have been found out. Thus the arrival of Kagawa will give Rooney a player to link with and cut through defences.

Nick Powell however is a player like Bebe, Obertan and Hernandez who represents a small gamble. The investment is small and thus if his returns are profitable, a la Hernandez, than Ferguson will be commended, yet if he fails to raise his level to what is required, he will not be deemed a failure. There is nothing wrong with this policy if the club is buying proven quality talent as well. However, for too many seasons now United have not brought in the required talent to compete with the top sides in Europe, which is where they will be judged.

Three more

This being said, United require three more signings this summer in order to have any chance of competing domestically and in Europe. And they require proven quality which will improve the side. There was no surprise when Rooney had his outburst two seasons ago, United were simply not good enough and it was only based on the poorness of sides around them such as Arsenal  and Liverpool, a capitulation from Chelsea and the building presence of City, that United won the league and alleviated Rooney’s concerns. Yet Rooney was right, and this summer Ferguson needs to provide Rooney with more quality.

And so, there is no doubt that United MUST get Robin Van Persie. Player of the season last year, which was deserved solely on his ability to single handily save Arsene Wenger’s job by achieving third place, has made RVP a wanted man. His ability to stay fit allowed him to prove his world class strikers ability and there is no criticism that he wishes to leave and achieve more than Arsenal can offer him. United and RVP are a perfect fit because simply they need each other. If RVP went to City then he could expect a high wage and trophies in the coming seasons, which seems the perfect choice. However, at United he has a chance of being the saviour, a position he found himself in last season at Arsenal. He clearly enjoys this role, he took the captains role in his stride and it improved him as a player.

As for United, they need a leader and a goal scorer like him in order to compete with City, it is imperative that they capture Van Persie over their rivals because they need him and they cannot allow City to have him. Thus, United need to match City’s offer and promise RVP that he will be key to their side in the quest to win the title. City have a strikeforce already which would make any team shiver, making it difficult to see where he would fit in that side, especially if they opt to play one forward with three creative midfielders behind.

For everyone; all at United, RVP, the fans and the Premier League, RVP must go to United to make next season remotely interesting, because if he doesn’t, United will not be able to compete and City will walk away with league. If he goes United will then have a real attacking force, the ability to play four attacking players out of Rooney, RVP, Kagawa, Welbeck, Valencia, Nani and Young will mean they have more depth, variability and importantly potent attacking ability to score goals, yet scoring goals was not the problem, conceding them was.

Defensive security

Ferguson needs to address the issue which he has ignored or neglected for too long. Roy Keane left United in 2005 and was replaced with Owen Hargreaves, who unfortunately was ruined by injury. His replacement was Darren Fletcher, who excelled in central midfield and became a major part to United’s success from 2009-2011. However, the curse of the midfielder struck again with Fletcher being diagnosed with illness. And his replacement has still not been found.

It was a blow to United in 2009 and 2011 against Barcelona when Fletcher was out, simply Giggs was not good enough or cut out for the role and in recent years United have attempted to mould Anderson from a number 10 into a ball winning midfielder, in this quest they have failed and in so doing have exposed Michael Carrick and made United vulnerable and weak in midfield. By not addressing this position, Ferguson has done an injustice to the fans and his players. If he wishes to be successful this coming season and beyond, he must purchase a quality defensive midfielder.

When you look at the successful sides across club and international football in the past decade, there are players such as Keane, Vieria, Makelele, Essien, Busquets, Mashcerano, Yaya Toure and Khedira who have been instrumental in making their teams defensively solid and secure in order to give freedom to players further forward to express their game. Brasil have done it for decades, playing a block defence with two holding midfielders, which allows the full backs to join the attacks, with dangerous effect. A tactical necessity which seems so important to be successful has been neglected by Ferguson.

Now I believe he plays with deeper midifielders, yet Carrick is not good enough defensively to do the job required, he is the Xavi to Barca’s Busquets, and thus United need a Busquets, Makelele type player in order to improve the strength of their midfield. There are two players who fit this role perfectly; either Yann M’Vila or Chiek Tiote.

M’Vila is the better player in terms of ball retention and technical quality. His potential seems very high and it is no surprise he has been much sought after by top clubs around Europe. His proposed move to Arsenal seemed a done deal, yet as always with Arsenal, something has held it up. This is United’s chance to jump in and snatch him away. M’Vila next to Carrick will make United a much better side immediately and with Rooney dropping in to make a three man midfield, United’s midfield will actually look strong and will be able to compete with the best of Europe. United require a presence which intimidates the opposition and improves the solidity of the defensive unit.

If M’Vila is not available then United will not be getting a poorer player in Tiote. In fact, they may actually be getting a more consistent and reliable one. Whereas M’Vila offers much potential, Tiote offers experience and proven quality. His two seasons at Newcastle have shown that he understands the league and can handle the physical aspects of it. He has actually dominated United on more than one occasion and those performances must have alerted Ferguson to how he could contribute to United’s midfield.

If United and Ferguson are serious about challenging for the title this season, then the proof will be in bringing in a quality defensive midfielder. If this does not happen then I expect teams to dominate United in midfield, over run them like Bilbao, Basel, Wigan and Newcastle did last season, and which will mean another season without a trophy, for United, the fans and Ferguson, this just cannot happen.

Ruthless over sentiment

Finally, United need to address a position which been overlooked for two years. Patrice Evra was affected heavily by the situation which happened in the World Cup and he brought these issues with him to United, he lost his concentration, focus and discipline. Added to this was the death of his brother and the Suarez issue, all of which understandably distracted his focus again and degraded his performances on the pitch.

Amazingly he was given the captains armband, where he did not perform or lead the side well enough to warrant the leadership of the side. It seemed more of a token gesture for the loyalty shown to the club during the Rooney affair, which although commendable, should not be a reason for making a player captain. Sentiment should not cloud a managers decision making, yet unfortunately with Ferguson it has done.

Quite simply, United need to replace Evra at left back. He is not good enough for this level anymore and United have been poorer defensively because of him. Jordi Alba would have been a great purchase, yet more for attacking purposes. Leighton Baines represents a better defensive purchase for United and would be an ideal replacement for Evra. Add to this his assist rate for Everton and United would be getting a major asset to their side, in a position which has contributed little attacking prowess and much defensive frailty in the past couple of seasons.

If United wish to be successful then they must go for three signings this summer to improve the XI, not just the squad or the future of the team. The side has become mediocre in terms of United being a top player in world football and it is through their excellent manager and his drive which has kept them competitive. With the return of Vidic (whose injuries are becoming worryingly common)  United will be having a world class player return to their defence, and if he stays fit, will reduce United’s defensive record, yet there are positions in the XI which need improving.

Ferguson is set to embark on one of his most difficult seasons for decades as manager of Man Utd, he faces what I would regard as a near impossible task of overcoming City and thus he must invest and improve his squad if he wishes to end his career at United successfully. There is no doubt as to the amazing job Ferguson has done at United, no other manager in the history of football can compete or compare to what he has done at this one club. His ability to evolve the squad, stay competitive and overcome each new challenge, has been credit to his ability as a manager, coach and leader.

Yet he now faces his most difficult task, which he failed in last season and without more investment he will fail again. He still has time to make this coming season a success, yet must act quickly and decisively to fix the problems which threaten to produce another barren season at Old Trafford.
