Volume 2: Dear President

Written By Unknown on Monday, October 20, 2008 | Monday, October 20, 2008

Dear President, I recall the days when people like you came back from exile with nothing but the clothes on your backs, this is when you appreciated the value of greedy black business people in this country, you were not in power and all the levers of the state were still very much in white hands.

These greedy black business people (in your case Indian) kept you afloat all the way to the 94 elections. Some of these greedy people had kept the sport alive in spite of all the difficulties of the apartheid era. Dipping into their pockets and running the sport with little corporate support.

After 94, Football still remained a poorer cousin of all sport codes in South Africa, even then some of these greedy people found it in their hearts (and pockets) to bid for the 2006 world cup, they did not succeed, Charles Dempsey had other ideas.

These greedy people went further to again bid for 2010 world cup and succeeded this time, you see Mr. President not many people give them credit for that, they always refer to Madiba magic etc. but it was the hard work that these greedy men and women put in that landed us the world cup, by the time Mandela went to Germany, the deed was done.

You see Mr. President in the apartheid era, the only significant capital expenditure you can point at is the FNB stadium, built by the bank for the sport, look around the major cities and see what the apartheid government did for rugby, a stadium in every city, world class not HM Pitje or the former Orlando.

The 2010 World Cup forced your government to also invest in the sport just like the Krugers invested in rugby, it is because of these greedy men that Orlando is now going to boast a world class stadium, it is because of these greedy men and women that a soccer stadium is being built in Durban, and another one in Nelspruit etc. it is because of these greedy men and women that your government is investing in roads and telecommunications, aagh these greedy men and women. They have created so much employment it’s not funny.
