DR'S ART: ARE YOU A SUPPORTER OR CHEERPERSON?

Written By Unknown on Monday, October 20, 2008 | Monday, October 20, 2008

Supporters mean a lot to their team! Are you one of the supporters or are you cheerperson? Who is cheerperson? Someone who will only go to stadium when his/her team wins! But if his/her team is losing he/she doesn’t attend games. Claiming she/he can’t watch team that is losing. ("My question is what impact are you doing to change the situation?").

Who is supporter? Someone who attend games (even if his/her team is losing) to watch his team live, cheer players, help if the is problem instead of being problem him/herself (e.g. booing his/her team players, seeking someone's death if his/her team loses). And there are other things that makes you supporter, e.g. buying clubs merchandised and others.

In South Africa we have lot of cheerperson than supporters. Lets look at England, Tottenham Hotspurs haven’t won a game in Premier League up to know but they supporters still fill the stadium. I haven’t heard of a single accident where supporter(s) want coach's head or booing they own players (which happen every time here in SA, if the team is losing), even when they are team is down by 2/3 goals they will sing to lift players up. That’s what I call supporter, the people who will always be there win/draw or lose they support they team.

But in South Africa it’s a different story! If the team you claim to "support" is losing you don’t go to stadium, claiming you can’t watch people who are losing, you are forgetting that you are part of the team (If they lose you lose, why don’t you go to help them change fortune?). Worst of all, if your team that you claim to support is losing you will bay for the coach's head, yes you will try to kill him by throwing stones, chairs, bottles or everything you can find at him. While doing this you forget that you were not supporting the team, you were booing your own players but know you are blaming the coach. Some said they can’t go to stadium because a ticket cost 2 beers; they rather buy beer than go to stadium.

Doc, you said a mouthful. I think it is high time that all fans come together and have imbizo regardless of team affiliation. We the fans are the stomach of South African foot ball. Together we can do much better. First we need to go on a mass campaign of getting new fans. We will have to leave no school behind, leave no firm behind, leave no suburb behind. We must call this campaign "SONKE E STADIUM". We have enough resources to build our provincial offices and our headquaters. This will create jobs and help many fans gain some revenue.

Doc lets take the fans to the next level.
