Today, the Local Organising Committee for The 29th Edition of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations South Africa 2013 launched the 100 Days Countdown at the five host cities.

The LOC deployed most of its board members to the 5 host cities on Wednesday for what the Board Chairperson calls, “an important milestone towards the preparations and plans for the hosting of AFCON 2013. We are calling upon all South Africans and Africans in the diaspora to come out in numbers as we mark this 100 Days till the tournament.”

“We call upon all soccer loving Africans to help us choose a Mascot that will best reflect the nature and character of this soccer tournament”, said Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, LOC Chairperson.

The unveiling of the 100 Days Countdown clock in each city was followed by a call to the public to participate in choosing a Mascot for AFCON 2013.

The Department of Sports and Recreation South Africa together with the Department of Basic Education commissioned a schools competition for the drawing and design of a Sport Mascot for AFCON 2013.

The shortlisted Mascots named Shingo, Hagazonke, and Takuma respectively, earned high scores after the participation of 300 schools and a response by 80 learners from which 12 drawings were shortlisted and reduced to three (3) by the Adjudication Panel.
