Brainiac’s PSL Weekend Review

Written By Unknown on Monday, September 17, 2012 | Monday, September 17, 2012

AmaTuks ((University of Pretoria) adjusting well to life in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) - It’s the perennial debate that’s gone on over the years. What’s better – a team of young players mixed with a couple of experienced (older) players or vice versa?  Well, on Friday night the University of Pretoria scored a goal (pardon the pun) for the former when they beat Moroka Swallows 2-3. So while Swallows continue their trend of scoring/conceding 3 goals per match, the undefeated, hard-working AmaTuks are only getting better and better.

The case of the two Rogers - Here’s a case of two Rogers, Roger De Sa and Roger Palmgren. The one just got a job; the other might be out of a job. The one just returned from holiday; the other might need one soon. The one won a game over the weekend; the other lost a game. But after witnessing this weekend’s action we can safely say they have one other thing in common – they both have a LOT of work ahead of them.

What’s wrong with Johan Neeskens’ knee? - Four games. One win. No draws. 3 losses. 13th position on the log. Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach, Johan Neeskens, somehow managed to outlast his counterpart at Orlando Pirates, August Palacios, who got relieved of his duties on Monday due to a ‘back injury’. The change worked wonders at Pirates as they managed to record their second win on Saturday. At the rate at which Sundowns’ players are squandering chances and with Neeskens’ current record the way it is, one must wonder how long it’s going to be before we hear of him relinquishing his job due to a ‘bad knee’.

It’s raining goals. No, it’s hailing - Kaizer Chiefs recently launched their new campaign, Reclaim the Glory, where they seek to return to club to its glory days. So far they have the started the season well, and on Saturday they were leading 2-0 just 34 minutes into the game against Black Leopards when a freaky hailstorm forced the game to be abandoned. The game will now be replayed from scratch on Wednesday, 19th September. If Chiefs are to get back to the glory days then they’ll first need to do one thing right – get Mother Nature on their side.

Remember those ‘Middendraw’ jokes? - No, your eyes aren’t fooling you. No, the league table is not upside down. Yes, Maritzburg United are top of the league. Though it may be a temporary stay, depending on Chiefs-Leopards results (game postponed till Wednesday), the boys from Maritzburg are looking down on the rest of the PSL teams, courtesy of two wins and two draws. Some of you may remember the jokes fans made about then Chiefs’ coach, Ernest Middendorp, whose name was changed to ‘Middendraw’ due to the many games he drew. The only thing that’s funny is that it’s the ‘richer’ one of the KZN teams that’s bottom of the league – Amazulu.
