Following
the release of coaching candidates by the South African Football Association (SAFA),
I must add that, in all honesty this is an overall good list...
STEVE KOMPHELA – I’m not a fan of
Steve, he’s just a motivational philosopher, not a coach. He has a poor
coaching record at Bafana Bafana, Kaizer Chiefs, Manning Rangers, Platinum
Stars and I refuse to give him credit at Free State Stars because Kinnah Phiri
did better than him. He belongs somewhere in a studio or lecture room.
GORDON IGESUND – My preferred
candidate, his record speaks volumes. Some may question his international
experience, but he did well with Rangers in the Champions league, that is proof
that he can stand his ground internationally. Did Clive Barker have
international experience when he guided us so successfully?
GAVIN HUNT – I wouldn’t have a
problem with him if he’s selected. My fear with him is that he has Pitso Mosimane
tendencies and may become another monster if given an opportunity. Contrary to
blind popular belief, Hunt plays a good brand of football. His teams keep
position and play it on the ground, his sin is that he also consistently
capitalises on the aerial weaknesses of ALL
Premier Soccer League teams, and the blind think that’s his only playing
philosophy.
EPHRAIM MASHABA – a very good coach
who can improvise with the material he has. He’s not the one to complain about
development and lack of strikers, he makes do with what he has and turns
average club performers into key national team players. His sin is that he is
black, and SAFA, like the societal black-on-black, has a tendency of
disrespecting their own. They will make his life a living hell; that may count
against him – again.
NEIL TOVEY – Did he really win
the league at Mamelodi Sundowns? I still have my doubts. Overall, he is not a
bad coach, but he has not done enough to be elevated to this level… maybe in
2020, not now.
