DISKIOFF Q&A with Thomas Mlambo

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 | Wednesday, June 20, 2012

1. Will Spain be the first international side to win three successive major competitions following wins at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup?

I don’t think so. They need a striker and Torres hasn’t been on form. The coach hasn’t played any of the other strikers and they are missing David Villa.

2. If you are only able to watch one game in the quarter finals, which one will you watch and why that game?

The battle of the dark horses – Czech Republic vs Portugal. Neither of them is expected to win but it would be incredible to see one of them in the final. Cristiano Ronaldo is competing to be the Fifa World Footballer of the Year so from an individual perspective, he needs a big tournament.

3. Eight years ago Greece stunned the world by winning Euro 2004 against host nation Portugal in the final. Which team is most likely to surprise us?

Greece has a chance and it would be a great surprise if they beat Germany. They’ve done it before so why not again?

4. Which player is most in need of a strong tournament?

Cristiano Ronaldo definitely needs a big tournament. He’s always been pipped to the Fifa World Footballer of the Year Award by Messi. The judges look at what you do for your national team and with Messi not playing in the Euro, Cristiano needs to show what he can do for Portugal. It’s now or never.

5. How will England cope without their prolific striker Wayne Rooney?

There’s a lot of pressure on Wayne Rooney now that he’s back. England hasn’t succeeded in a major tournament like this and Rooney needs to prove himself on a bigger stage.

6. Who will lift the trophy on July 1?

I don’t think it will be Spain. I’m actually looking at the Italians. They have match winners, plenty of experience and the draw has been in their favour.

7. What is the Discovery Dream Team campaign all about?

The Discovery Dream Team campaign is a special, football themed promotional campaign that the Discovery Channel (DStv channel 121) launched in June to tie in with the Euro 2012 soccer championships. It features my voice and uses gaming style soccer graphics and ‘spoof action replay’ footage of some of Discovery’s biggest stars in action.

8. You must be happy to be part of this project - what can we expect from the shows?

The Dream Team features five of Discovery’s biggest and most popular faces: Robson Green of Extreme Fishing fame; Bear Grylls, River Monsters’ Jeremy Wade; and Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman. I love the channel and when I’m not commenting on the European Championships for SuperSport, I’ll definitely be tuning in to watch these action-packed shows.
