The PSL’s financial boom, a doom for Bafana

YES WELL, a press conference is conveyed and the Premier Soccer League supreme, wearing two hats, the other as the Chairman of Orlando Pirates presented the new signing for his club Luis Boa Morte. And the country is abuzz with the exciting news. The PSL can afford players of such stature. Wow, what a sly coup. That was the talk. “The PSL is reaching new heights”. An Achilles heel for Bafana Bafana I’m afraid.

And this curve of course was already steadily descending. The PSL has established themselves as one of the best league in the world. Financially and all other facets that has to be done in the boardrooms. Fine.

The question that will forever loom large is that how do you gauge the standard of the league? And how does being the best league in Africa financially, benefit the country?

To point out to the last question first, it best benefits the executives who are sitting in the swanky offices in Parktown. That’s all. And the former question, I repeat that it will forever loom large.

It has dawn upon me that the Iron Duke’s resolve of committing himself and his club to endeavor playing in the CAF Champions League to indirectly inject impetus to the Bafana ranks, a point of reference being made of the 1995 Bucs triumph of the aforesaid competition directly influencing the National team to win the Africa Cup of Nations in the subsequent year is just a concealed guilty conscious.

The former Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for the 2010 FIFA world cup knows all too well that the PSL’s meteoric rise is like a poisoned chalice to SAFA and the country at large. With the salaries of the players reaching the standard of the stadiums they are playing at, it becomes difficult to honour call ups, the clubs also find it expedient to pull their legs. Not to mention the dwindling number of exports. Who suffers?

SAFA
What about the quality of the players playing in this league who are too comfortable to come out of their shell? Who suffers?

SAFA
Is the standard of our league anywhere near the top 10 bracket in the world as in financially?

But then again, how do you gauge the standard of the league?
