While the Springboks will be playing Fiji in New Zealand,
back home the Soweto giants clash one more time this weekend in an ABSA
Premiership match at the FNB Stadium. Stakes are always high in this encounter not
only points are at stakes but it’s also about the bragging rights.
Last weekend
Orlando Pirates were crowned MTN 8 champions at the expense of Kaizer Chiefs,
this time around it will be interesting to see how Amakhosi respond. Lately
their problems seem to heading for a bottomless, things went sadly for them
when Pirates got better of them for third time in a row after they lost to them
in the Carling cup and Vodacom Challenge.
On Wednesday it got worse when the team was humbled by
Ajax Cape Town and the Chiefs faithful seem to be getting a little frustrated
with the current team’s performance.
Something came to the attention of many people who
watched the game down in the Mother City on Wednesday, thus the presence of
former Orlando Pirates coach, Rudi Krol in the stands. That on its own has
certainly raised questions about the future of VV at Naturena.
It seems losing a derby here in South Africa is something
that can put the manager’s job online. Last season when Orlando Pirates lost to
Chiefs two times in a row, the fans were calling for his head. The Bucs
management went on to agree with Krol that he was going to leave at the end of
the season but things changed dramatically when he went on to deliver them a treble
at the end of the season.
It’s a pity that people have selective memory in
football, this is the very same coach that humiliated Orlando Pirates last
season and prior to the last two games that went badly the team had gone three
games unbeaten in the league. Losing to your arch rivals in football is always a
bitter pill to swallow but cool heads have to prevail in the process.
Teams all over the world will sometimes go through a bad
patch but firing the coach is not always the solution. One cannot be a bad
coach over two games.
Bringing in a new
coach at this point of time will mean starting from scratch and by then other
teams will be collecting points. After all it’s all bad there is still Telkom
Knockout, The Nedbank Cup and the league to play for.
MTN8 is something that you only have to beat two teams
then bang you are in the final, surely Chiefs management shouldn’t be worried
about that loss after all it’s high time their team challenge for the league
title and stop being cup specialists.
