Orlando Pirates striker Collins Mbesuma is a
great target man. He is a natural born fighter, a bulldozer upfront. Even when
he doesn't score I appreciate the fact that his presence upfront is
felt.
The problem behind Orlando Pirates scoring
drought is down to the defence and the midfield over ambition. This creates a
mere role for strikers because our midfield and defence wastes so much
possession with many shots on target.
Thabo Matlaba and Happy Jele go all the way and
make unnecessary shots at goals rather than passing to our strikers to finish.
Sifiso Myeni, Tlou Segolela and Thandani Ntshumayelo do the same. Lucky
Lekgwathi used to that before till he realised that it’s not easy to score long
range shots.
I noticed that Benni McCarthy used to command
and complain of lack of supply and most of the time they used to pass to him
than taking long shots. It only happened because of his ego and the fact that
he was bigger than everyone pound to pound.
The day the coach Roger de Sa becomes strict on
the issue of our defence and midfield ambition that’s when strikers will start
scoring. I’ve realised that Erasmus is not a natural born striker. He is an
attacking midfielder who plays best behind two strikers.
