Coaches decisions will make Pirates lose League and all Cup Competitions

Puzzles me how Orlando Pirates coach Roger De Sa and his two assistant coaches of Eric Tinkler and Teboho Moloi planned the AmaZulu game. Only one player from the Black Leopards game was unavailable for selection but there were a few unexpected changes made that did not make sense to me. I plead with Diskioff readers to make me understand…

Why did Ndumiso Mabena start the game when he has not had enough game time since his injury, because he created 1 goal? Our attacking formation of 4-3-3 was good since communication between our three attackers was almost telepathic.

As for replacing Ndumiso Mabena (striker) with Onyekachi Okonkwo (midfielder) when we need a goal also didn’t make sense as we noticed that in certain moments when Tlou Segolela was trying to play a more attacking combination with him he was thinking more possession that’s why he kept playing back passes.

Mpho Mokola has not had much game time since Joining Pirates why him over Tlou, Why Mabena over Daine Klate. Reason why the guys could barely pass each other was because the squad had changed so much hence the miscommunication. We have all noticed that Sifiso Myeni is more effective when playing behind the strikers… why not play Klate and Tlou as winger Myeni behind striker and Collins Mbesuma in front?

Lehlogonolo Masalesa and Oupa Manyisa as central midfielders that gives Patrick Phungwayo and Thabo Matlaba space to overlap and Siyabonga Sangweni and Rooi Mahamutsa central defence and then if we do get a goal or two you pull one of the wingers and add midfielder?

If you want to give the other guys a chance to play, do it in the second half when we are winning, when you want to change the shape of the game not in the starting line-up.

10 Football Superfoods To Improve Your Performance

Sports nutrition is a huge part of today’s game in giving players that cutting edge, and Spurs nutritionist Matt Lovell has been sharing some of the top 10 ‘Superfoods’ that can improve your game. Check them out…

1. Venison steak boosts recovery and power
Free-wheeling venison is bursting with a quintet of performance-enhancing boosters: creatine, arginine, glutamine, iron and vitamin B12. This fab five join forces to increase explosive power and drive you through a punishing regime. Eat after training to maximise recovery between training sessions.
2. Mackerel burns fat and elevates mood
The fatty acids in oily fish build the hormones that support muscle-metabolism (the rate your muscles burn fat at rest), the immune system and also stabilise your mood. Tuck in after training: eating before a workout could cause an upset stomach.
3. Broccoli helps vision with vitamins
Vitamin A improves vision by giving the retina a power-up, and vitamin C and glutathione aid recovery. Add broccoli to your post-training meal to maximise the absorption of vitamin A.
4. Spinach improves endurance
Jam-packed with calcium, iron and chlorophyll, Popeye’s supplement of choice encourages the transportation of blood around the body, improving cardiovascular endurance – so your biceps may not become comically oversized but you can at least run for 90 minutes. Add spinach to a carb-rich lunch to slow the release of glucose into the blood.
5. Beetroot juice boosts energy
The nitrates in beetroot juice will inspire your muscles to perform above and beyond the call of duty, by increasing bloodflow and fuel delivery. It will also help your muscles dump out any waste. Quench your energy thirst with this before a game and you’ll put in a lung-busting performance and fend off your opponents, with plenty more left in the tank.
6. Curry spice eases inflammation
Hot to taste, cool by nature, curry spice eases inflammation and accelerates the recovery process. Feeling fresher in training will improve your fitness and skill acquisition. Adding a bit of garam masala to some lean meats after training will help your body recuperate for another battle.
7. Green tea helps focus
Green tea’s caffeine helps enhance focus on the pitch and supports fat-burning during exercise. This will keep you tuned-in on the pitch and trim off it. It can also help to widen your arteries, transporting more oxygenated blood around the body, increasing stamina.
8. Almonds fuel workouts
This nut provides the amino acid needed to support creatine synthesis. Put simply, this will encourage bloodflow and allow your body to make the maximum gains from training. Add some to your post-game recovery shake for a quick hit.
9. Broad beans help awareness
Full of the amino acid tyrosine, as well as a chemical found in the brain called L-dopa, broad beans will help you remain focused during the big game. If you’re not playing a match, stay on the ball by eating a handful before training.
10. Blueberries stop injury and aid recovery
High in vitamin C, this super-fruit supports the immune system and helps prevent against injury, enabling you to train harder and more productively in each session. Eat throughout the day to gradually build up the body’s antioxidant defences.

Kaizer Chiefs to field rugby team at 7s PL tournament in George

Both mainstream sporting codes in South Africa will be on show together for the first time, when a rugby team wearing the kit of South African soccer giants Kaizer Chiefs participates in a tournament based on a T20 Cricket format.

The occasion is the inaugural NBM 7’s Premier League tournament, taking place in George on 14-15 December. The tournament features the South African Super Rugby franchises and six corporate teams from all over the country.   Numerous celebrities, famous South African brands, and sporting icons will participate in two days of action-packed sports at the picturesque Outeniqua Park Stadium.

The Kaizer Chiefs 7s rugby team will be coached by former Springbok, Gcobani Bobo and captained by former record try-scoring Springbok ace Breyton Paulse. In a move that celebrates Chiefs’ Gauteng roots, the rest of the team will be made up of players from the Vodacom Bulls and MTN Lions franchises.

According to tournament promoter Willem Strauss, “Witnessing the social cohesion and interaction between different cultures when the Bulls played their Super Rugby matches in Orlando in 2010, was the inspiration for inviting the soccer giants, Kaizer Chiefs to participate in the NMB 7s Premier League.”

Strauss also added that this is a major coup for rugby. "With sevens now an Olympic sport and South Africa realistic medal contenders for the 2016 Games in Rio, this is fantastic news. Kaizer Chiefs is one of the biggest brands in South Africa and to expose their fans to rugby opens up a whole new audience for the game. I am very grateful for the support from Chiefs and I am sure they will benefit greatly from this venture."

Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Director, Jessica Motaung, explained why they decided to field a team in this unique tournament. "This is the coming together of two big brands, a cross-cover of two sporting worlds and we at Kaizer Chiefs are very excited about it.  We like to be part of sports history as a brand and we felt the association with the Rugby 7s is a historical milestone in football, rugby and sports as a whole.  Our Sponsor and Financial Insurance Business partner, Hollard brought the opportunity to us and we agreed so we could take our place in this exciting sports event.  Kaizer Chiefs and Hollard have a special association and we are thrilled that they thought of the Gold and Black to be a part of the tournament.”

“Amakhosi will have the might of our supporters behind us and I am confident that Gcobani and Breyton will do a great job.  We are about Love & Peace, but we mean business on the field of play," she added.

Michelle Davadoss, Marketing Director of Hollard Insurance said “We’re excited about this unique initiative which promotes collaboration across sports, which celebrates excellence and which promotes healthy activity in a family-friendly environment. This is a great example of the different thinking we bring to our partnerships. Our great relationship with Kaizer Chiefs has enabled this initiative. We’re especially thrilled about the fact that the Kaizer Chiefs 7s team will run rugby clinics in the local neighbourhoods as part of community development and promoting rugby among the youth.”

Both Bobo and Paulse played for the Springboks in fifteens and sevens, two of only a handful of players ever to achieve this.

The decision by the iconic Chiefs brand to venture into rugby was embraced by a very excited Bobo. "In my early days in sport, I wanted nothing more than to play for Kaizer Chiefs, become a legend and then move to Real Madrid. It did not work out quite that way as I became a rugby player, but this opportunity to be associated with Kaizer Chiefs is one I cannot miss again. It will be a massive honour and privilege to coach their team. Breyton has vast experience as a player and to tap into that knowledge will be a massive boost to the rest of the team," said Bobo.

Paulse and Bobo will be joined by a number of sevens icons, with the likes of Fabian Juries, Stefan Basson, Mzwandile Stick and Brent Russell playing alongside and against international stars like Zar Lawrence (New Zealand), Ben Gollings (England), Shane Williams (Wales)and possibly Quade Cooper (Australia) amongst others.

The six Super Rugby franchises will also field numerous of their star players as the R1 million rand in prize money provide massive incentives to all to field their best teams.

Tickets are for sale at Computicket branches nationwide already.

Minister Mbalula pay homage to the late Madigage

Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula said the forthcoming AFCON 2013 must be dedicated to the late Bafana Bafana assistant coach, Thomas Madigage.

Madigage who died in a car accident in Burgersfort last week was buried in his home area of Driekop on Sunday, 28 October 2012.

Addressing thousands of mourners who included Limpopo Premier, Cassel Mathale, SAFA President, Kirsten Nematandani, coach Jomo Sono, former ANCYL President, Julius Malema among thousands of people who came to pay their last respects for the late Madigage, Mbalula said a road or stadium must be named after Thomas Madigage.

“We need to salute the ZCC church for nurturing this exceptional character, a humble individual in which no grave will be big enough to bury him,” said Mbalula.

Coach Sono said apart from being a good footballer, Madigage whom he adopted at the age of 15, was an intelligent individual and a loyal assistant coach who held no grudges.

“That is the reason why the crowd gathered here would shame most of the Premier Soccer League matches attendances,” said Sono.

Premier Mathale said it was heartbreaking that the province of Limpopo was burying yet another of its talent after it had also lost former Orlando Pirates striker Lesley Manyathela under similar circumstances.
“Fame never went into his head; he remained selfless, went an extra mile in whatever he did and was one person who put his country above everything. He was a very calculating person in making decisions,” said Mathale.

SAFA President, Nematandani said Madigage was a very principled individual who believed in teamwork.

“They say individuals score goals but teamwork wins championships. Here is a man who was famous but remained very grounded; let us take a leaf from this man,” said Nematandani.

As a national player, Madigage won four caps and worked as an assistant coach under Roy Matthews, Pitso Mosimane and Gavin Hunt.

Nike Maxim Hi-Vis Ball Lights Up Top European Leagues

This weekend sees the Nike Maxim Hi-Vis ball introduced across Europe’s leading leagues -- the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga – as the clocks go back in Europe and the winter season kicks in.

The 2012-13 Maxim Hi-Vis ball features a color combination blended together in a unique way to create maximum visual performance and contrast on the pitch. The Hi-Vis ball also features NIKE RaDaR (Rapid Decision and Response) technology to allow players to see the ball better and capitalize on split second scoring and passing opportunities.

In addition to the Hi-Vis innovations, the Maxim features geometric precision technology to distribute pressure evenly across the panels for a consistent, accurate and powerful strike.

Additional performance enhancing innovations include:

- Hand-stitched casing for craftsmanship and durability;

- Durable, lightweight PU casing with micro-grooves stabilizes ball flight to increase efficiency and accuracy;

- Flexible, supple, cross-linked nitrogen-expanded foam provides superior “touch” and a consistent feel in all weather conditions;

T-Shirt Protest Should Provide Wake Up Call For The FA & Friends

Racism in football has become a hot topic in recent times, particularly in England but also across Europe.  There have been several high profile incidents over the last couple of seasons where the issue of race has been a factor and allegations of racism against players and fans have been reported and investigated, leading to various consequences for those involved.

Luis Suarez was handed and eight game ban by an F.A. disciplinary committee for an incident with Patrice Evra, despite the case boiling down to one man’s word against the other’s. John Terry, on the other hand, was only given a four game ban for using racist language against Anton Ferdinand, even though the words spoken by the disgraced former England captain were clearly caught on camera, providing clear evidence of what was said. Suarez’s charge was brought immediately and after a month long “investigation” the F.A. went ahead with a show trial before condemning the Uruguayan and handing out the lengthy ban which was then served.

In Terry’s case however, the F.A. chose, and this is the key point, they chose to allow a police investigation rather than investigating themselves. The case dragged on for months, it was postponed, Terry was named in the England squad for the Euros with the allegations hanging over him and many felt that Rio Ferdinand, the victim’s brother, was passed over for the tournament in order to avoid conflict within the squad.

When Terry’s case was finally heard in court, his legal team used the full extent of the law to get their client off the charges. Terry won his case in court, however, the F.A.s hand was then forced into finally taking some action against their former poster boy, mainly due to the fact that the court of public opinion, having seen the  video evidence, had convicted the Chelsea player almost whole heartedly. The ban that followed was half that given to Suarez and, due to the F.A.s unwillingness to pursue the case initially, the delays, the fact that Terry represented England, his line of defence in court, his penchant for bending the truth and the severity of the language used, many, both inside and outside the game, felt that the punishment was far too lenient for the offence committed. What’s more many onlookers were left with the feeling that the whole episode had been farcical and could easily have been avoided had the F.A. had the courage to do its job in the first place.

The decision last weekend, in the wake of the John Terry affair and other F.A. failures, by Jason Roberts, Rio Ferdinand, Joleon Lescott and many other Premier League players to refrain from wearing T-shirts in support of the F.A. and P.F.A. sponsored anti-racism charity “Kick-it-Out”, has brought racism in the game right back to the top of the agenda. The protest was not against the charity itself but against the authorities who are meant to support it and lead by example. The issue this time however is whether the F.A./P.F.A. really want to rid the game of racism or whether they are simply  paying the cause lip service.

The big surprise for me, when the issue first exploded back into the public consciousness in late 2011, was the  shock with which the alleged racism was reported. It was as if the press, footballing authorities and some of the general public actually had thought that racism, both in society and football, was a thing of the past. As if they arrogantly believed that it was something that had been dealt with a long time ago, had almost been forgotten about and was almost certainly soon to be confined to history. Not so; racism/xenophobia, whatever you wish to call it occurs naturally in the human psyche. It is not something can be taken away, it is something that has to be overridden by education and personal experience, and this education must begin at a very young age and continue with every generation.

The level of overt racism from fans has declined hugely over the last twenty-five years or so. Gone are the days of banana’s being thrown at black players or of monkey chants being aimed at them on a regular basis, but racism is still there and complacency on behalf of the authorities is a casual racist’s best friend. There have been several instances recently of fans aiming racist abuse at players on Twitter, including at Papiss Cisse and Stan Collymore. Attempting to hide behind keyboard doesn’t make the crime any less despicable. At a time when the BNP are gaining ground, when xenophobia and islamophobia are on the rise, when Europe seems to be lurching to the right, now is the time that Kick it Out and the other anti-racism charities (not just in football) need the support of those who fund them and claim to be fully behind them.

Kick it Out and other charities such as Show Racism the Red Card have done some fantastic work in raising awareness and carrying the message that racism is not to be tolerated in football, however, they can’t be expected to do it all on their own. They must be backed up sufficiently by the F.A., the P.F.A. and the government.

Kick it Out only employs five permanent full-time staff. Funded by the F.A. and the P.F.A. their budget is a miserly £300,000 a year, slightly more than John Terry earns in a week. This budget is to cover the entire game in England, from grass roots level all the way up to the Barclays Premier League. Yes they do good work and have done so in the past but how can they be expected to advance the cause in the best possible way with such monetary restrictions? Considering the amount of money in the game, it’s shameful to think that an organisation doing its best to promote an end to discrimination in the country’s number one sport has to work of such a paltry sum. If the football authorities are serious about tackling racism or at the very least, want to be seen to be serious about taking it on, this figure needs to multiply and rapidly.

The government has its part to play here too. Show Racism the Red Card, a Newcastle based anti-racism charity is threatened with having to close its doors after fifteen years of exemplary work in its field. The charity works with schools, using football and other sports stars to deliver a strong anti-racism message to kids from a young age, exactly the kind of work which desperately needs to be done on a much larger scale. Despite diversifying and spreading its funding to try to stay afloat, the charity is in a major hole and needs government funding to continue its work. Show Racism the Red Card currently receives funding from the Scottish government but not from the British government at Westminster. The group employs twenty-five full-time staff around the country and has had support from Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer.

Chief executive Ged Grebby said recently in an interview with ChronicleLive.co.uk:

“We have diversified our funding quite a lot and that’s why we’ve been able to survive in the current climate.

“ ….if the Government were not to support us that would mean we would have a very serious financial problem.

“We need to get out there and get on with combating the problem of racism, not just within the game but as a society as a whole. If we don’t have the troops on the ground then society isn’t going to be able to move forward.”

You would think that this is a cause the government ought to support, given the excellent and increasingly vital work the charity does and particularly in light of the strong stance taken by the government when condemning the recent behaviour of Serbian fans during their country’s U21 match with England last week. Quite simply, it’s time for the Tories to put their money where their mouth is on this issue or risk similar scenes from England fans of the future.

Blaydon MP Blair Anderson has urged the government to “pull their finger out” and went on to say that the work done in schools is vital in the fight against racism.

“Ultimately it’s the young people that can make a real difference.

“The more we can get young people to understand the issues around racism the more likely it is to become a way of life.”

These comments further reinforce the point that racism is something that must be overridden by education and tackled at a young age before prejudice has time to form and fester. More money must be spent on these charities, not less. Racism is not something that can ever truly be said to have been defeated, it has many different facets and can take on a variety of forms, both covert and overt. As long as humans continue to be born, racism will be a problem, the process of conquering it is continuous and never-ending and it is our responsibility to ensure that our commitment to the cause never wanes. It is this that must be understood, by the F.A./P.F.A, by the government, by the media, by fans and by the public at large.

Former Newcastle defender John Anderson, a member of Show Racism the Red Card, summed this point up perfectly.
