NOTE: This is not a consolation post.
Say whatever you want to say, but losing to Orlando Pirates in any competition of any kind is always a ‘big deal’. Perhaps losing to them in a competition where a ‘couch coach’ gets a chance to coach the first team is a bit consoling and having Khune take the last penalty is a bit cheering.
Honestly speaking, I laughed when Itumeleng Khune allegedly took that penalty, for a second there I thought he was executing one of his trademark distributions, but to one of the fans, seeing the competition was all about the fans. So I thought the grandstand distribution was part of the plan.

But here’s the bottom line; We’ve lost to Pirates twice in less than 10 days and that doesn’t go down too well knowing our Mayfair friends who will celebrate anything from a draw to an irrelevant win in a match like the Carling Black Label cup final. Yes I’m sour, but I really do think the Black Label Cup was irrelevant and was just an insult to what the Soweto Derby is really about. There’s never been an unimportant derby and this one should have never happened in my opinion. But that’s a topic I do not want to entertain.
Now to the point this post is about; Pre-season is really about the coach getting his team ready for the season ahead. The competitions make the preparations a bit more competitive and give the coach a chance to see how his players and new combinations fair in competitive games.
The derby has always been one of the best or should I say rather most challenging tests for players because of the history it holds and of course the rivalry between us and Orlando Pirates. Hence the Vodacom Challenge, which has always ensured us one derby fixture before a new season of PSL footy begins. Good for the game.

However, it’s unfortunate that we’ve seen two derby fixtures already and the season hasn’t even begun. We’ve lost both which doesn’t help. Remember that many of us judge our team based on these games against Orlando Pirates and I just want to remind you that it’s only preseason.
The idea is to try out new combinations and give newly signed players a chance to play. We could play another derby tomorrow and loose it, on paper it will still not mean anything. Why? Because it’s preseason and no one cares (Well not really, I’m sure the ones who win on the day actually care).

So let’s not starting doubting our charges based on these preseason games, let’s all rally behind our team and welcome our new signings who are still trying to find their feet, let’s show them we have confidence in them. The real business begins in a week with the MTN8 and we need to believe in this team to produce positive results.
On the positive side, we’ve signed really great players (Parker, Majoro, Ritchie, Tefu and Lawley) and believe me this will make a huge difference to our season.
Ps. Khune’s penalty was proof why he’s the best distributor of the ball in the PSL.
