Time running out for Wenger

“I have never cared very much for personal prizes. A man does not become a freedom fighter in the hope of winning awards, but when I was notified that I had won the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Mr de Klerk, I was deeply moved.”

This is how Nelson Mandela responded when asked about the prize he shared with FW de Klerk. It is humble in tone yet expresses his philosophy, but within the context of the moment. It is a very good answer to an honest question, considering its significance to many people but just imagine if he had gotten such a remark wrong? At the time, it would have been a very poor choice of worlds.

Arsene Wenger, the Napoleon as it were of Arsenal Football Club, is a man seen by the outside world as a slightly austere yet compassionate purveyor of football’s attractive side. His way has held sway at Highbury, then the Emirates after that. His way was the one that led to the Invincibles of the 2003/2004 season, where his side became only the second side after the Preston North End side of the 1880s to finish a top flight season in English football unbeaten.

His way has also led to players such as Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas to blossom on English soil. In that unbeaten season, Henry scored 30 girls at a time when Fabregas was just emerging as a first team player. Midfielder Robert Pires, now since retired, chipped in with 15 goals. That season followed double winning seasons for Wenger in 1997/1998 (his second in English football) and 2001/2002.

The Frenchman has spent his managerial career in London building sides on the principle of high technical skill and attack, in contrast to his rivals such as Sir Alex Ferguson along with Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho (when they were still involved at Liverpool and Chelsea respectively) who are more pragmatic in their approach. It has led to a team capable of breathless attack. But a problem that has nagged the Gunners over the past few seasons has been their inability to hold the line as well as they maraud forward.

Their 2-1 defeat to Bolton underlines their season: so much promise, but like years before, very little reward. The last silverware to grace their trophy cabinet was the 2005 FA Cup and apart from Fabregas and striker Robin van Persie, no one else in his squad (also excusing goal keeper Jens Lehmann, who has been picked up by Arsenal due to an injury crisis within their selection of goalkeepers) has tasted the sweet nectar of victory in a major competition.

That is a long time for a club that became as good if not better than all the clubs in England during the early 2000s. Though Wenger maintains an almost god-like status among Arsenal supporters, there is a type of disquiet spreading across the legions of Arsenal’s fans that suggests they are slowly, ever so slowly, losing patience with Wenger. Yes, he did bring Arsenal unmatched glory but considering what the club has achieved in the past, the wait for success has been too long.

Wenger and the Gunners have had to contend with a Premier League that has been muscled into by foreign owners with large cheque books creating a field of disparity between the Big Four, let alone the rest of the league. Manchester City for example has spent more money on players over the last two season than Wenger has spent since he joined Arsenal over 13 years ago.

Arsenal were the last big independent club as recently as a month ago but have since been bought out in the most part by American business Stan Kroenke. Before the takeover, Arsenal financed their move to the Emirates Stadium on their own pound and in comparison to their rivals are in a far healthier financial position. Still, for the clubs fans, such security should translate into big spending on the transfer market to plug the large holes in Wenger’s squad. Since Lehmann’s first spell with the club, he hasn’t been able to find a goalkeeper as consistent since.

The likes of Fabregas and co have continued to blossom under Wenger’s tutelage, along with the dynamic Russian Andrei Arshavin being added to the stocks. But in comparison to their rivals Wenger has spent next to nothing in keeping his squad competitive and near the summit of the Premier League. He has complained that the market is inflated, which it is, but for those demanding trophies, it is the same old story.

For that he should be lauded in a way since few managers would’ve had the ability to do such a feat and keep their side competitive to the point of being one of the best if not the best. But now the time is approaching where even his most ardent supporters must be wondering at the back of their minds what the future holds for Arsenal Football Club once Wenger departs.

Wenger’s latest contract extension means he will be at the club, unless something dramatic happens, till 2014. But can Arsenal wait that long till they win some silverware again? Their League Cup final loss to Birmingham was a shock result since many considered it the Gunner’s destiny to end their trophy drought. In the final against Alex McLeish’s physical Birmingham team Arsenal were found wanting, their sparkling football failed to ignite.

This season is already gone regardless of what emerges from the Emirates in terms of fighting talk. And with Wenger indicating that he won’t be intending on spending too much during the off season, Arsenal supporters will be wondering what next season holds. Their team’s soft underbelly has been cruelly exposed, especially since the “Rock of Belgium” Thomas Vermaelen has been on the sidelines, with rumours circulating that an exodus awaits Wenger and his charges due to the lack of trophies at Highbury.

Wenger, regardless of how the rest of his time at Arsenal is served, will be one of the best managers to ever come to England. He was the first of the foreign legion of managers to take on the Premier League and win. He was the man who masterminded the Invincibles incredible season and the philosophy his team pursues is a pleasure to watch when on song.

However, playing the best brand of football means nothing if trophies aren’t filling up the boardroom. Wenger should see out his remaining years at Arsenal. But if he were to suddenly depart, would the football masses be really surprised?

Time is running out and let’s hope he and his side find its groove next season. A team as good as Arsenal need to win more to show the rest of the league that playing the beautiful game in the beautiful way is a path towards constant success.

Its almost season's end - What a PSL season it's been!

A lot has happened during this season of the PSL. Some coaches were fired and rehired and some have been trusted by their respective boards and that have paid dividends.

You look at a coach like Ruud Krol who has been through hell and back with Orlando Pirates and the fans at some stage were calling for his head to be axed, but then the Orlando Pirates board excericised patience hence they look like they will eventually win the championship this season.

Orlando Pirates have played terrible football at times and they however managed to get crucial points from the terrible games they played, and if you didn't believe in that gorgeous fairy called luck then you better start believing it now because Pirates have been very lucky this season. This has been a very exciting PSL season due to the quality of games we've seen thus far. Who can forget the 4 all thriller between Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town?

P Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Orlando Pirates 27 16 8 3 38 20 18 56
2 Ajax Cape Town     27 17 5 5 46 29 17 56
3 Kaizer Chiefs 27 15 8 4 39 20 19 53
4 Mamelodi Sundowns 26 16 3 7 45 23 22 51

Wondering what the table above is for? That's how things are standing at the top of the premiership table. Orlando Pirates is hanging on top through a goal difference rope. They are also walking on a tight rope as Ajax Cape Town won't make it easier for Pirates to win the league.

Ajax Cape Town have dished some legendary football of late. They have the makings of a championship winning side. They have very exciting young players that can compete at the highest level of football. They play as a unit and some individual brilliances has kept them on the chase for the premiership and sure if Pirates can win this one, they will sure have a sigh of relief as Ajax would've given them a run for their Rand...

I'm writing Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns off from winning the Premiership. Sundowns has failed dismally with a galaxy of stars they have in their team. A coach was fired because fans caused a little riot outside Super Stadium because of the unsatisfactory results that the team produced.

I wonder if having Gorowa as coach is really working for Sundowns as he has limited Matty Pattison to the bench trying to accomodate the primadonna Teko Modise.

That's how it stands at the top and if Orlando Pirates slip up then Ajax will be on top again and withonly a couple of games to go, any slip ups from the top two teams will mean loss of the premiership. Exciting times indeed.

11 AmaZulu 26 5 14 7 38 37 1 29
12 Platinum Stars 27 5 13 9 27 32 -5 28
13 Vasco Da Gama     27 6 9 12 28 39 -11 27

15 MorokaSwallows 27 6 7 14 20 38 -18 25
16 Black Aces 27 4 3 20 18 48 -30 15

The relegation zone is also exciting as well. Who would've thought that Moroka Swallows would find themselves in a ditch like the one they are in right now. Swallows fighting it off in the play offs? Looks like it. If only they had a Gordon Igesund factor earlier in the season, then something could've given. They have extra ordinary talent in the likes of Siyabonga Nomvethe, Ritson and Keegan Ritchie. They have been beaten by everyone in the premiership and farewell to Black Aces farewell...

Top Scorers
Knowledge Musona - 13
Katlego Mphela - 12
Lehlohonolo Majoro - 11

Goal scoring has been too much of a problem in S.A soccer and its a factor that can't be denied. A lot of excuses have been given for not finding the back of the net, one of it being defensive tactics being adopted by the likes of Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. 13 goals for a leading scorer when the season is at the brink then sure there is a far worse problem in our league and it needs to be fixed very quick.

All in all - its been a great season and may the best team lift the PSL Cup this season's end!

Taking a break with Miss Adams

Tell us about yourself…
Jade Adams... I’m a 24 year old female from the one and only Mother City, working as an Administrator at Old Mutual Head Office. I love my family, boyfriend, friends and soccer. Like shopping, clubbing and live to party up a storm along with my fellow Urban Chicks as we’re known, lol…

How many soccer jerseys of Ajax Cape Town have you bought since you started supporting them?
I currently sport the latest replica jersey. It’s the only one I bought since I became a fan. I fell in love with Ajax at my first live match where they beat Bloemfontein Celtic at Cape Town Stadium on the 27th August 2010.

Who is your best friend from the enemy camp (Santos or Vasco)?
I’d have to say Cole Alexander from Vasco, he has a lot of potential, hope Ajax will make use of him in the new season.

Do you attend all Ajax Cape Town games?
Almost all home matches, unless work keeps me too busy. Will be going on my first trip to an away game with the supporters club to Johannesburg against Kaizer Chiefs 07/05/2011.

Who should be Ajax’s new coach as Foppe de Haan has decided to retire at the end of the season?
Would have been great if De Haan weren’t retiring coz he has added much value to the team and helped them get this far (much respect and good luck to coach). But someone like Gavin Hunt - he has won the league many times with SuperSport so I personally think he can keep the Ajax team on the high they’re on at the moment.

How much do you spend roughly on your team’s merchandise a season?
I have spent about R550 this season on a replica jersey, flag and accessories (need to be kitted in red & white from head to toe. Pity you cannot see my pumps in the picture, lol.)

Who do you think will be Absa PSL Player of the Season?
Don’t think… I know, Thulani “Mr. Magic” Serero.

Who is your favourite Ajax Cape Town player?
I have so many, but Clayton Daniels.

Best game of the season for Ajax Cape Town?
Beating Orlando Pirates 3-0 at Newlands stadium, it was pure greatness.

Turning back the years

It has been many years since the ‘age-cheating’ issue has made a great debate. There’s no doubt that age cheating has a damaging effect on the development of our sports in general.

The Nike Soccer Tournament for under-15s, played in Soweto in 2008, was a farce. Some teams decided to pull out of the competition when they became suspicious that others had used overage players.

Even the sponsors threatened to pull out of the competition if age cheating is not properly addressed. Seemingly this did not set any alarms to most PSL teams.

Some of the teams’ developments are still with a cloud hanging over them with regard to this particular issue. The Orange Mabingwa Under-13 Football Challenge, as the tournament has been dubbed, was rocked by the same age-cheating fiasco that has bedeviled most of youth championships in Africa. Recently Kaizer Chiefs decided to close down their entire development programme.

"I must warn that the problem is not subjectively a Kaizer Chiefs misfortune, but investigating much deeper will surely expose other related similarities. Our internal enquiry has thus kicked in to prepare the authentic re-establishment of our youth programme obviously with fresh and honest parents and young lads whose future may be secured by the professional management of our youth programmes,” Said Kaizer Chiefs CEO Kaizer Motaung to Kaizer Chiefs Website.

Legitimate young players from European and American countries continue to serve their countries for years, getting better as they advance in their careers. The question is why most African players drop out of reckoning early than their European players of the same age?

Most of the blames should be directed to parents and coaches who, perhaps out of desperation for a better life for themselves and their children, or a desire to benefit their clubs, employ unscrupulous means for players to succeed, especially when there are financial rewards for the clubs. Poverty, limited life chances and the desire to win at all costs are named as contributing factor to this, now regarded as an epidemic in football in Africa.

If we continue hiding under the fact of saying African continent is poor, then lets forget being a football continent. That thought should be completely erased in our mind. It will take thousands more years for an African country to win the World Cup or any major senior trophies.

Greed and ignorance is the major issue here. Blame should be put on coaches, parents, clubs, schools and the sport's national controlling body, which, all contribute to the growing malaise by either encouraging it or turning a blind eye.

Verification of birth certificates as the only proof of a player’s age cannot be enough. In the quest to justify their places and earn personal glory, sports officials of states, sometimes with the various state governors fully in the picture, often went out on a poaching binge few months to the biannual Sports Festivals to increase their chances of either winning or coming top of the winners’ table.

In South Africa, some schools has this frequent penchant for fielding people who are well over the age bracket for winning sports competitions. Using the younger sibling’s birth certificates or even borrowing from other young relatives has been common practice encouraged in some local schools. Hence often later, some players in the local premier league tend to change their ‘surnames’ or even ‘names’ through their football careers.

There are numerous ways to ensure this issue is sorted. Various methods need to be instilled to put a stop and lock-up all the perpetrators. In the presence of the lawyers as well as agent, clubs must ensure that a declaration form needs to be signed before signing a player. Some have suggested that schools or pre-school teacher(s) need to be called for verification.

While others say parents should also sign a declaration form. Also alert them that should it emerge any complications regarding the player’s age later, a case of fraud will be opened against the player. That means this issue should be made a legal matter as soon as possible. Players, agents, coaches, club owners should be alerted of this potential repercussion. Turning back the years in sport is fraud…

Mamelodi Sundowns Victim XI

One cant stop imagining what would happen if we were to get a team of people who were let down by Downs participating in the PSL.

What do you think of this team (Downs Victims United FC)?

1. Thembalethu Moses - a promising goalkeeper whom Sundowns unlawfully terminated his contract with 2 years to go but gave him a 1 moth salary. Though he won the case, the young man is still haunted by that case and finds it difficult to stop goals for Amazulu.

2. Fanyana Mokoena – told to report for training in 2 weeks only to accidentally find out the training was scheduled for a week earlier, when ask why he was lied to, he was served with a free clearance certificate.

3. Kurt Lentjie – Once rated the next David Nyathi, did wonders for Sundowns unfortunately took bread on credit from Mambush General Dealers and failed to pay, Mambush sold him to Maritzburg United in order to recover his money.

4. Dino Ndlovu - signed a two year deal with the Brazilians, allegedly not paid for 3 three months, though he won the case afterwards he has not been the same player

5. Matthew Booth – got a promising move back to Europe during the Confed Cup, the team refused to release him promising him heavens. Now he is been left to rot on the bench. No team wants him since he has not been that active.

6. Bennedict Vilakazi – stolen from Pirates, promised all the best only to be dropped like a hot potato to Black Aces who gave him the boot. Now they washed their hands on him (don't want him anymore).

7. Lerato Chanbangu – driven to the beer world after the team treated him like a tennis ball, released him for free to SuperSport, brought him back while doing great, made him to rot in the bench

8. Manqoba Ngwenya – what a talent… exploited for many years, just when he sees the light he joins Aces who are now relegated, another talent drowned by Downs.

9. Lungisani Ndlela – he was banging in goals for SSU even played for Bafana until he got to Sundowns. They drove him nuts, he landed in NFD for Batau.

10. Richard Henyekane – 2008-09 PSL Top scorer with 18 goals. Refused to listen to his former boss Mato Madlala not to join Sundowns… Now he is wondering on the bench how he failed to take that advise.

11. Sandile Ndlovu – loaned by Sundowns to Dynamos where he earned the nickname AK-47 for his strike rate. The jealous team called him back to make him rot in the bench, released him after they were done with him.

Head Coach: Hristo Stoichkov – escorted by police to free him from the angry Downs mob.

Assistant Coach: Antonio Habbas – escorted by police, firefighters, SA Navy, Airforce and Defence Force to free him from the same angry Downs mob.

Eintlek, Lets be honest here!

Tell me, if one is a Mamelodi Sundowns Supporter, I mean a supporter, NOT just a fan... is it really fair to expect that person NOT to think that there are some conspiracies metted out against the team by the PSL?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m being very subjective here... with an honest view though...

Bona, I still say, last season, Sundowns would have won the league, but the PSL intervened... here I’m referring to the Santos game which was replayed from 0 minute when we were leading 1-0 initially, then, under similar circumstances, the Swallows game, which we were trailing 2-0 was continued from the minute it was stopped, why the double standards?

Then the Nedbank Cup semi-final was said to be played at a "neutral" venue, yet we played Amazulu at Absa Kings Park? What’s that?

And now, here they move the game with Amazulu to 4th May whereas this midweek is available. Now the team hasn’t played in a while, the next game will be against Chiefs, now some key players will miss the Chiefs game instead of the Amazulu one... and Downs games will be squeezed in a short period....

With all this happening, are we supposed to keep quiet and say all is well? I expect Chiefs and Pirates fans to jump up and down like lunatics in defence of the PSL and to ridicule my claims, but, as Ace Ngcobo will attest, the PSL IS ROTTEN TO THE CORE!

Benni McCarthy: Fans vs. Benni (ref = media)

Good day Mr. Marawa,

I, as a fan, felt compelled to send this mail to protect our precious name. A lot has been said about how fans are so inconsiderate when it comes to the treatment of Benni. I as a fan, am insulted as to how we are portrayed.

This is going to be a long one, so please bear with me.

As a person, Benni McCarthy has done so much for himself that you can never ignore his accomplishments; he has been a great talent to ever come out of our country. He has played the game to the best of his ability and all praises to him.

I heard all the accolades that were showered by one of the listeners last week, and for a second, I felt bad for being such a bad person.

Champions League winner, top goal getter in 3 various leagues, and all round brilliant striker.

I take nothing away from all his accomplishments and I wondered to myself, if he has been such a great ambassador, why are we as the fans have such a hard time honouring him??

I do not play professionally, in fact, the last time I played in an amateur game, I was very slow and sluggish... but my love for the game is far greater than my ability. I want to emphasise that, THE FANS ARE A VERY BIG PART OF THE GAME… do not ignore us, it does not belong to SAFA or Metro FM or Pitso Mosimane or The various club owners. THE GAME BELONGS TO ALL OF US. Ask any player, the game is so much better with a full house of spectators doing what they do best, SUPPORT... while the players do what they do best and play the game. It is the reason that every festive season, we still show our faces to support our local squads at various tournaments around the country.

I also support Kaizer Chiefs, but my Kaizer Chiefs hat is off and I take it personal that because Benni is getting a raw end of the stick, we in Gauteng (particularly Chiefs and Pirates fans) are said to be the ones responsible for the hostility. As much as we may be at fault, it would be noble to shoulder some blame on himself with the hostility he is receiving.

As in the media, they always say, there are always 2 sides to a story... allow me to share the other side (I invite any criticism or debate). Please note, I say this only from my perspective, I do not speak for anybody else, those that hate Chiefs, do not paint with the same brush.

The mail you got about accolades from Patrick (I stand corrected) was well put and correctly understood, it did hit home about the kind of talent we have in this country.

Here is the second side, (please do not label me as a person that hates Benni)

It is all fair and great that we remember that during his time with Bafana 1997 - 2010 (13 years). The man had 79 caps and 31 goals. Based on my calculations, that is not the most impressive accolade. In fact, these numbers tell me a story that everyone has been thinking about.

As a fan, I felt robbed by him. I will never forget the day he made his debut against Holland, we may have lost the game, but he was a refreshing point to talk about for many years to come. The runs he made, the bravery he came in with, the swagger left so many of us with smiles for months. I get shivers just thinking about that moment, very exciting times.

Now, a fresh 20 year old who is taking this game by storm, made me get my hair coloured honey blonde, so no one can tell me that I was never a fan of Benni.

79 caps in 13 years, is a sad reality. I will not judge his goal ratio, just get upset when he gets compared to other strikers like Luiz Ronaldo (97 caps and 62 goals for Brazil). South Africans are not blessed with "World's best strikers"... his number of goals is not important for me now, I look at the caps. Let us observe the caps he has.

As a fan, we play our part by taking out our hard earned money, sacrifice our time and commit to support our game. It becomes a vicious cycle, if we feel we are not getting the best from our Stars, we will never give our best as well. The stars will also know that we are not giving our best to support, and they will also not give their best… it will go on and on until we all realise how important it is for all of us to play our roles.

When I go to the stadium, I want to watch more than 22 guys running around after a ball… I could watch that at the Moloi Grounds in Mapetla. I want to see a show, I want to be dazzled from people who play the game at the highest level. I want to see the best of the best compete against one another, even if you are not the best, please give your best of our ability to make sure I get my time and money's worth.

I will sing from the top of my lung for that… trust me.

But, if you ask me to play my part and you refuse to play your part, I will give you the finger too. Benni gave us the finger... many times. Proof of that is in the numbers. 79 games in 13 years, that is equal to 6 games a year for the national team. Seeing that we are going all out to sing and praise him, let us look at how many games do Bafana Play on average per year and how many has he missed. I do not have the numbers, but I can tell you that they would shock even the biggest butt kissers.

Seeing that we also are fond of comparing, allow me to break it down on the comparison front.

Kolo Toure:
At the time he was playing for Arsenal, he was once interviewed by you on your show and had a fat discussion about National games vs. the Salary payers. Given that the world knows how Arsene Wenger feels about FIFA dates, I was extremely impressed on how Kolo took it in his strides. I think Ivory Coast was due to play Lesotho, on any given day, that would be a walk over for the mighty elephants. No disrespect to Likoena. He could have easily sat this one out, in fact, the entire first choice could have sat this one out. They went and played their stars, cause they know how the fans want to see a show by the most prized soldiers. Kolo Toure actually told you that he does not care what Arsene Wenger's opinion is about him playing that game, he is called by his nation to represent, and that is what he is going to do. PERIOD!

Didier Drogba:
Started to play in 2002 and already has appeared 73 times for his country, and counting. 5 years after McCarthy started playing for his country. You will understand why Drogba will always be a legend in his country, he has made himself a true "Spear and Shield" for his country. The fans know that if he is able to, he will definitely be there. They have learnt to rely on their captain, who by the way, has been a consistent performer for his clubs, so he could have easily played the fatigue card anytime he wanted. So please just do not compare Apples with Oranges, they only thing they have in common is that they are both fruit.

Lionel Messi:
If we were to stage a Bafana Game vs Argentina, trust me, we would all love to see Messi come on and play against Bafana. Messi understands the role he plays for fans, people will pay good money to watch his 30 min appearance at FNB at midnight, never mind a full game at normal time. The young legend is at the tender age of 23 and already played 55 times for his country. He does not have to always show up given that he is playing very regularly for Barca week in week out. Guess what, he shows up and give people a good show... Fans will never be disappointed with his behaviour, he has given so much and they have also given him so much.

Cristiano Ronaldo:
Age 26 and played 80 times for his country and counting... talk about always there. Nuff Said.

Siphiwe Tshabalala:
I know some of the comparison were a little unfair, but let is us take it home a little. Even Pirates fans Love this boy, every South African idolises this young man, in our eyes he is god sent. He is very humble, and every game to him is one to show us that his really loves the game and understands his role. Now and then, some games do not go his way, but we love him cause he always plays to win and leaves his all on the field. At the age of 26, he has already represented the country 57 times since 2006. That is 22 caps away from catching up to Benni. A betting man would not bet against him reaching that mark. (it could have been more if Santana was not here)

Aaron Mokoena:
I will sooner give and shower my praises to this man before I do Benni. Looking at his Bafana career, he has every reason to call it quits. Jeered and booed by the fans, still the first to answer a call-up. He is a soldier that any country would want, first to dive in the mud to test how deep they are, he was there at the darkest hours of the countries football and still remains... his commitment is second to none, I will never speak of Aaron and Benni in the same sentence that involve "Pillar of commitment". Aaron deserves my praise, and I do not think this mail is long enuff to show him how much I respect him and thank his commitment to the country.

Please note, I could have added the likes of Eto'o, Lindan Donovan and Park Ji-sung... but let me spare him the embarrassment.

Now, that I have said what I think fans feel.

Here is another angle that makes me frown on Benni's behaviour. We as the fans are not connected to him. He is connected to the media more and that relationship plays very nicely cause the Media also has an obsession to make us like him. He is a darling to the media, not to us thou. Allow me to make an silly comparison to his relationship with us. It is like a Sibling who is able to give you the best opportunity for a world class education, but still ignores you when you are hungry and need basic food.

Stop shoving him in our throats, he is too bitter... his relationship with the media is more important and the fans can see that. I do not know what he goes thru on a daily basis as a professional, I do not know his troubles and challenges, but I would love to understand them if he reaches down to the people he is now supposed an icon for. Michael Essien did it, when he wanted to retire from international football cause of his never ending injuries... why can't he??

Would love to see him use the media to find out what we feel and how he feels... create a dialogue of some sort that will make us understand his situation.

This should serve as a lesson to the rest of the players, namely Segolela and Shabba... do not turn your back on your fans, cause when they do turn their back on you, it becomes the coldest place ever. Being a footballer, comes with its benefits and occupational hazards, note them and learn from them.

Please do not think that I am anti Benni, but this is a view from the other side of the debate. I welcome the views from the other side that will enable me to change my mind, if you all feel that I am being too harsh on him... let's talk on brapule@gmail.com

Eish, I don’t know, mara it’s well over 2-grand.

Have you ever cried after your team lost a game?
I have never cried! I think somebody rubbed onion into my eyes and obviously tears rolled out… hahahahahaha! But I remember crying after my team beat the other yellow team 1-0 in the 2nd leg of the MTN8 semi-final… Eish, tears of joy, my man!

Best-ever game you’ve watched at the stadium and via television?
At the stadium it has to be Orlando Pirates vs. Bidvest Wits, when we came back from 2-0 to win the game 3-2! And the best game I’ve seen on TV was when I beat Chiefs 8-0 on Playstation… hahahahaha. But I think it has to be the 4-4 draw between Ajax and Sundowns.

As a soccer fanatic you need to use your weapons wisely and drinking beer outta a vuvu is something you need to try! The beer goes down like Cristiano Ronaldo in the box!!

Deep inside Jose Mourinho's strategic mind

On Saturday we were blessed with another display of tactical superiority from Jose Mourinho, so I will explain in greater details how he finally figured Barcelona out.

From the 5-0 humiliation Mourinho really went to the drawing board to re-think a lot of things, the first issue was the suicidal high defensive line.

The reality is if you give Barcelona too much space they will punish you, so the high defensive line was meant to compress the pitch & suffocate Barcelona, but Mourinho learned the hard way that real Madrid does not have the type of player who can defend that intelligently, because a high line really puts the positioning of your defenders to the ultimate test.

To solve this problem Mourinho studied a lot of the Rubin Kazan matches and out of then he realized there is another way of making the pitch smaller without playing a high defensive line. Mourniho realized you can also make the pitch small but using more aggression in midfield, so as a result Mesut Ozil was replaced by Pepe & this became one of Mourinhos greatest innovation.

In the first 10 min PEPE was only allowed to play deep, then as time went on Mourinho tested him by playing him higher up the pitch and he kept getting better & better. The inclusion of PEPE is so impressive because when you look at the midfield players of the first match Sami Khedira, Xabi Alonso, Mesut Ozil, none of them had pace, but when you replace Ozil with Pepe then it becomes a different story.

To tell you the truth when Pepe was tested in the midfield role against Tottenham I was not impressed, but I soon understood that Tottenham were always coming through the wings so you could not notice PEPE's contribution. Pepe's contribution was so good that all the players who scored the first 5 goals were nowhere to be found.

Alonso struggled in the first match and already Mourinho came up with plan B for him in the name Ozil, whom came in dominated Barcelona. Karim Benzema was still kept in the first 11 because he has brilliant first touches, which could be crucial in counter attacks.

It is now clear what is happening at training, before Saturday it was about how to press but today most of the attention will be on the final pass from Di Maria and the front three's movement during counters.

This is the end of the precious Barcelona era and they will never beat Jose Mourinho again.

Footballer of the season or Popular footballer of the season?

Our two top Football publications have really messed up the concept of a footballer of the year. The manner in which these two publications go about in selecting their best player of the season leaves it open to a whole lot of manipulation and false results.

It goes without saying that, if you give "supporters" ALL the power to choose the best player, more than likely, their decision will be heavily influenced by their club loyalties. Yes, we do need to involve fans, but cant we come up with mechanisms to regulate and ensure that the process is fair?

In one of the publications, I managed to vote about 10 times for a single player in a space of about 15 seconds? Bar 1 player, Chiefs, Pirates & Sundowns players occupy the top spots, whereas players from least supported teams like Maritzburg, Vasco, Platinum Stars etc occupy the bottom half? Is this fair? Is this a true reflection of the brand and quality of football we witnessed this season?

Are these powerful publications telling us its "okay" to have a player of the season by virtue of what team he plays for rather than his exploits on the pitch?

This is simple, KICK OFF & SOCCER LADUMA must decide if they are going to have a Footballer of the season or the Most Popular player of the season...they must stop fooling us or themselves.... finish & Klaar!

Marketing 101 for PSL Teams

Since a lot of PSL teams have been struggling with marketing and bringing the crowds to the stadiums, I thought this crash course will help. Hopefully the Mazolmans and the Shakoanes of this world will get to see this:

You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say, "I'm fantastic in bed."
That's Direct Marketing

You're at a party with a bunch of friends and see a gorgeous girl. One of your friends goes up to her and pointing at you says, "He's fantastic in bed."
That's Advertising

You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and get her telephone number. The next day you call and say, "Hi, I'm fantastic in bed."
That's Telemarketing

You're at a party and see a gorgeous girl. You get up and straighten your tie, you walk up to her and pour her a drink. You open the door for her, pick up her bag after she drops it, offer her a ride, and then say, "By the way, I'm fantastic in bed."
That's Public Relations

You're at a party and see a gorgeous girl. She walks up to you and says, I hear you're fantastic in bed."

Suggestion: Lets ALL become National Team Coaches

It is really sickening to see the rate at which South Africans seem hell-bent on dictating to Pitso Mosimane on what to do in his job.

Yes, we are allowed to have opinions which may differ to what the national coach sees fit, but why have we taken our "coaching ability (or lack)" to such extremely unsupportive lengths?

It seems every Rob, Rich and Piet wants to dictate to Pitso on whom to select and whom to play. 1st there were calls for the inclusion of the average Matty Pattison, look at him now, is he playing regularly?

Is he consistent? Most importantly, is he national team material? And Pitso has NOT closed the door on any of the players we are shouting for. He gives them a look-in now and then.

Selecting a player and not using him doesnt amount to a waste, the player gets to blend in and understand what is required at that level. You learn better when you are patient.

The Thulani Serero chorus is disturbing. On Marawa's show, instead of praising the coach for taking us from nowhere to number 39, every caller was focused on attacking him for not fielding Serero.

Who is Serero? I'm talking International football here. Im personally a big fan of Serero... but one thing we need to realise is that, at International level, Serero wont face cows like Thapelo Tshilo, Valery Nahayo, Lucky Lekgwathi, Old-John Mabizela etc.

The competition is at a different and higher level. Pitso has re-iterated many times that he's gradually bringing him into the fold, a sensible thing to do with an inexperience player.

If we continue like this,we will create another Siphumelele Bhengu, Excellent Walaza, Daniel Matsau, Siphelel Mthembu etc...

We, as South Africans, are very careless with our talent. One or two good games or even a season doesnt make one a great player.

Lets allow Pitso to do his job or take over the national team then accept responsibility for taking us back where we DONT belong!

Is it the END for Carlo Ancelotti?

Last night's loss for Chelsea just capped a very horrendous season for them. The first five games in the EPL for Chelsea were great. They were scoring and on top of the log. Still wondering what happened to turn the tables like that.

Anyway, Carlo Ancelotti had great seasons with Chelsea, but then the Champions League has always went far beyond his reach, even when at times they were at the brink of winning it.

Carlo Ancelotti achieved all greatness with Chelsea and maybe its time to say goodbye. Chelsea used to be commended for their stability in defence, but now its all falling to pierces. After Didier Drogba scored last night there was a glimmer of hope and one would think that they would go all the way to actually win it, but then Jun Sung Park becoming a hero after a few minutes of Chelsea's goal was more of a blow and an indication of a badly assembled defence. Why Alex (Alex Rodrigo Dias da Costa) started in such a high profile game is still a mysterious shocker. Is Ancelotti losing it? Maybe he is.

Ramires who is a youngster in the team did very well last night. I guess it was expected from an inexperienced lad like him to commit fouls and errors that he commited during the game. His red card was a blow but then the game had to go on. Michael Essien has become a bit rigid. He does well in the centre of the park, but then he fails to push forward in a number of cases. He is still a great player, but then senior players like him need to be examplary to the young lads coming up in the team.

Torres oh Torres!
Once again the obsession of Ancelotti proved to be costly and they paid the prize by having to exit the European tourney in the quarters. Gestures and Torres movement in the field just says it all. His morale has hit rock bottom and his confidence is just dead. Ancelotti persisting to use Torres will bear no fruits and at the end it will be Torres lamenting a career that could've been. Give the boy a break, try helping him by understanding where the knot got loose. Playing him only 45 minutes and then introducing Drogba afterwards doesn't really help Torres at all, because chances of Drogba really shinning more than Torres are just too high hence last night Drogba did shine.

One wonders what couldbe going wrong in Chelsea's camp. When Kalou was about to be introduced into the game last night, he didn't show any zeal of really wanting to play, so one wonders what one can achieve with such a dejected bunch of players. Frank Lampard had at some point in the game a goal scoring opportunity which he just "baby kicked" to Edwin Van Der Sar. A spirited, confident and fired up Frank Lampard would've put that in the back of the net or atleast force Van Der sar to make a save.

Is it maybe time for Ancelotti to call it quits? Or can Abramovic do the honors and fire him? I think the honorable thing for him to do will be to quit and who knows maybe a Lucrative deal could lure the special one back to Stamford Bridge...

Shakhtar: A lesson to PSL supporters

You are trailing 5-1 against arguably the world's greatest team of all time. You have every football fundi already writing your orbituary.

Your coach is making public statements of a defeatists. You are again, facing a team that is at full strength. You are literally a poor football nation in comparison to your counterparts.... what do you do?

Shakhtar supporters impressed me. What i witnessed last nite was clear undisputable proof that Europeans are passionate about their football.

The stadium was packed to rafters. What makes this interesting is the "fact" that their team was as good as out,but that didnt deter the support. What was displayed lastnite is what we call pure support, FOR THE LOVE OF THE TEAM.

You take a journey down south. Oho, weve got a misled nation that is dilusionally thinking its passionate about football. Weve got this pathetic mentality that we only attend matches when our teams do well.

Infact thats not even the case, otherwise teams like Supersport and Ajax would play in packed stadiums due to their consistent success. Bottom-line is that, we are NOT a football nation, we lack the necessary passion.

We are therefore, advised to either face reality or fix this!

The umbrella on the merry go round!

Mouth watering stuff! What a nail biting finish we are about to witness in the Absa Premiership Soccer League? The PSL dubbed the Umbrella has travelled to a couple of cities in South Africa.

It started on the nation’s capital staying in Chlorkoop for almost six months. Where then the early pace setters Mamelodi Sundowns opened a 10 point gap over everybody and many thought the umbrella will forever stay in Chloorkop.

Then the Umbrella moved to Soweto staying in Mayfair for two months or so. The Bucs had struggled to the top. You remember the 3-2 come from behind win against Bidvest Wits? Who will forget the last minute goals against the likes of the defending Champions or the outgoing Champions should I say (SuperSport United), and that equaliser against AmaZulu?

Then the Umbrella moved to neighbors, the Mighty Amakhosi. It did not stay too long there. If I’m not mistaken it only stayed for 88 minutes or so. Who will forget Juju’s equaliser?

After that it went back to Mayfair where it stayed for couple of weeks. Then Bucs failed to open a gap and the title contenders were pinning their hope on Siwelele (Bloemfontein Celtic) to beat Pirates in the Slaughter House - Bucs got a point. Remember at that time Siwelele were unbeaten at home?

The Umbrella then went to Kaapstad following a 3-0 win over Orlando Pirates, Ajax Cape Town held that Umbrella for two weeks. But their 4-4 draw with Sundowns gave Pirates another chance to hold that Umbrella.

So my question is, who will win it?

Chelsea will beat Man United very bad!

Too much speculation had gone into what could transpire at Old Trafford tonight. It’s tonight right? Anyway, With Chelsea going down 1-0 at Stamford Bridge it is highly anticipated for tonight's match to produce flames.

It will be interesting to see how Carlo Ancelotti will choose his forwards. My bet is Fernando Torres is and Didier Drogba, but then there is no law that says he can't play Torres, Anelka and Drogba in the same line up and sacrifice one of his defensive midfielders. It’s highly unlikely though.

With so much criticism that has gone towards Torres thus far, irrespective of how many minutes he plays he might redeem himself tonight. Andy Carrol scored 2 important goals for Liverpool last night against City and Suarez has done great for them ever since joining, so definitely the Mersey side doesn’t miss him at all. So, Torres must get on with the programme and start focusing on being a hero again and this is a perfect opportunity for Torres.

Chelsea have played at Old Trafford before so the venue itself is not going to be much of a threat to the ever experienced side of Ancelotti. It’s always a game of tactics and caution when United meets Chelsea, but then this might mean season's end for Ancelotti and his charges as the European trophy is all they are left to really play for.

Call me ambitious, but then I see Chelsea winning 3-0 here. Even if he doesn't start I see Torres breaking his goal drought and scoring a brace turning Old Trafford blue (provided he plays of course.). I see Drogba capping a great performance with a stunner of a goal and Petr Cech sealing a great show with a clean sheet. Ambitious? Yep, but it’s possible.

Wayne Rooney is really fired up, but then he is stoppable and tonight a hero will be made out of someone...

Manchester United 0 - Chelsea 3!

Charity Cup dies thanks to greedy PSL members

This is to the big cats of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) that care for themselves and not the soccer loving people of Mzansi (South Africa).

It started with the soccer tickets from R20 to R40… no one from the PSL asked us fans what we think of that - or we are just supporters? They forgot that we there ones who will pay that R40 in which in some PSL games its R80 a game!

Then it was the mother of all bombshells from PSL! Today (07/04/2011) is a sad day for South African Football! South African fans/supporters (people) are very angry about the PSL for ending the Charity Cup.

The PSL rich board members don’t care about us (supporters), but themselves because the history of Charity Cup will always be alive in each and every South African.

The painful part is that the reason given by the chairman of the PSL (Mr. Irvin Khoza) was worthless to say the list. The reason was that PSL has many soccer games in the year and the Charity Cup must be cancelled.

He made an example of Europe, but in Europe teams play more games than PSL put together in one year. However, the Charity Cup in Europe is number one to those teams from England, Spain, Denmark or even Italy. Example the Emirates Cup, the Arsenal team is doing that cup to power the poor, but in South Africa, the big cats of the PSL think otherwise about this prestigious tournament that also build some of their teams.

Are we playing too many games? Well that’s bull because even our local teams don’t care if they are playing in Africa (ie CAF Champions League to name one). As otherwise we would be making the quarterfinals or the semis of that tournament like the European teams fighting to just to play in the UEFA Champions League.

The Charity Cup was for young upcoming players to showcase their talent in front of a packed stadium - also a fun day for supporters across Mzansi to meet and spend the whole day supporting Charity and Mzansi Football.

I dreamt growing up that one day one will stand in Soccer City (FNB Stadium) on the field playing in the biggest crowd in the country - people calling my name as I score the winning goal for my team and also doing it for Charity.

However, the big cats of PSL have killed that dream and dreams of millions young stars who were going to benefit in this tournament. The big cats of South African Football are killing the most prestigious tournament in Mzansi like what they did to the First Division, Vodacom Second Division and Third Division.

PSL big cats don’t care about South African Football and its time for those people to move out of office and give this job to those people who care about our football and us (supporters).

I think its time our legends who understand our football and culture to take charge of our football. I’m tired of people who chilax at the PSL board and make decisions that going to benefit them and forget about the supporters.

PSL board took out the Charity Cup, but the Vodacom Challenge is still ON! Is this because the Vodacom Challenge is for them to be more rich and show off with other big cats like them in football world that they are big?

To all South Africans that love football, from today I will not go to any Premier Soccer League games and that useless cup (Vodacom Challenge) until the Charity Cup is back.

Vodacom Challenge must also be cancelled because is useless and doesn’t add value! It’s a pity that our leaders like to follow the European way, but still yet fail to copy it perfect. This is a sad day in our South African history and without the Charity Cup our football will never be the same.

Carlo Ancelotti is just obsessed with Fernando Torres!

Watching Chelsea go down to United that easy last night made one think a lot. Man United put a very brave and brilliant performance at Stamford Bridge last night and that was equally matched by Chelsea who failed to score on a number of occassions.

Wayne Rooney had a brilliant game and a nice goal to cap his performance. I guess he is back to his old self and the manner in which he celebrated his goal was acceptable this time around.

The power of Didier Drogba and his presence was being felt a lot by the likes of Rio Ferdinand and he was not an easy package to deal with. Amazingly the Drogba was winning balls and putting in crosses and passes which is not really his style of play, but then his constant need to prove to Ancelotti that he is really worth every minute he puts him on that field made him play his heart out.

Surprisingly he was being replaced by Nicholas Anelka. Fernando Torres had missed a couple of scoring opportunities already and it was evident as to who really deserved to be substituted. Carlo Ancelotti is very much obsessed about Torres and he is costing the team and Torres himself. Don't get me wrong, Torres have magic feet and he is still a good player, but then his goal scoring form has hit the bottom low. Does Torres need time out just to reflect and get himself back, or is Torres' probelem simply Psychological?

Torres' move to Stamford Bridge was not in error, but then if Ancelotti keeps his obsessions going it might end up coming down to Torres being labelled a flop!

Bottom line Man United played a great game that they managed to get a very important away goal which could as well be the decider of the next encounter at Old Trafford. Chelsea has enough experience to turn the tables around, but then why not give Elnino time out? Maybe he needs it, maybe he needs to rest his head a bit to just get a glimpse of who the real Torres is capable of doing.

Edwin Van Der Sarr had a stunning game in the posts. He organised his defence so well that they gave Chelsea no room. He was stretched and he produced an Itumeleng Khune Kind of save from Torres' header. At his age that's a great sign of wanting to win badly.

Ryan Giggs has quality and class and that never fades with time. His experince has been crucial for United lately and he sure plays like a 28 year old. He is a true legend and I guess Ferguson just knows how to get the best out of his players. Everyone that United play most boring football, but then they get to win all the time.

Going to Old Trafford wont be easy, but then does Chelsea have it in them to finish of United in their own backyard? Time will soon tell.

Can Spurs really comeback and make it count at the White Hart Lane?

Last night was a great night of football in the European Champions League. Beautiful goals were scored and it was not short of Drama.

The Real Madrid vs Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) game was a thriller. Was it some stage fright for Spurs? Can't really tell, but then their star players have been struggling with injuries.

Ade (Emmanuel Adebayor) was having a terrafic time infront of goal for Real Madrid. Two classy and flawless headers were good enough to put stamp on his name as one of the best strikers in the world. Ade's physique and height proved too difficult for the likes of Michael Dawson and William Gallas to deal with. He dented Spurs hopes with a 5 minute header and afterwards things started falling apart in the Spurs camp.

Peter Crouch had a nightmare last night. I guess the frustrations were beginning to show. His tackle on Marcelo was really uncalled for. A red card at that stage of the game really proved to be a crack on Spurs' hopes of making it to the semis. Things like that happen in football though, and Crouch can be forgiven for it.

No one knows what Harry Redknapp was really thinking as like usual he is unpredictable. He played Rafael Van der Waart in support of Peter Crouch, a combination that has proved futile for the team. The introduction of Jermaine Defoe in the 2nd half was more influential and direct. He held the balls and seemed to have a bit of a positive effect on the game.

Christiano Ronaldo played a superb game for Madrid. One could tell that he was still struggling with injury, but then he capped a perfect performance with a stunning goal. Jose Mourinho should be grinning now because chances of Spurs emulating the heroics of Madrid at White Hart Lane are very slim.

Maybe Redknapp needs to relook at his team and start making a few changes starting with Benoit Assou-Ekotto. His passes were wayward and always attempted playing long balls instead of short passing which is rather more effective. I have watched Assou-Ekotto play and he doesn't really form any dangerous combinations with those playing with him. He rarely uses his head and dropping him from the team would really help out Spurs.

Angel Di Maria's goal was a superb goal, definitely goal of the match. Madrid had the quality to pull it off, Spurs does have quality but then one wonders if its enough to score 05 goals at White Hart Lane.

Bafana Bafana Name Change!

Mr Thabo Mbeki was the first to call for a name change for some of our sports teams. These include: Bafana-Bafana, Banyana-Banyana, Ama-Glug-Glug (inherent from Sasol being the official sponsor) and Ama-kroko-kroko (what does this mean anyway?)

He said these names are not “fit” for national teams and that they do not carry the respect, status and symbolisms a national team should carry. I mean think about it, the cricket team is called the Proteas which is SA’s national flower and the Rugby team is called the Springboks which is SA’s national animal.

Sentiments along the same lines were uttered by Fikile Mbalula, the current Sports Minister "the name change process must be considered, even if it turns out to be a long and intricate process."

"Name change is a debate worth looking at... we are well-respected in the African continent, we are climbing the Fifa World rankings and I wonder if we still need that name [Bafana Bafana],"

With most football lovers against that and SAFA struggling to find reasons to change the name, businessman Stanton Woodrush, who owns the Bafana Bafana trademark, threw SAFA a lifeline and gave them a reason to change the name. Whether we like it or not, we can not allow that "Woodrush" to continue milking it while sitting at home just because the previous SAFA regime did not do their job properly.

My take is, over and above the fact that i also find no sense in all these names, SAFA and Football development will suffer should we continue wit this name.

The money Woodrush has pocketed so far could've done more for soccer development. The fact that the current SAFA leadership seem to be failing in this regard with the little that they have doesn't mean the next leadership will fail as well. They will need that money that woodrush is pocketing to develop the sport.

My feeling is simple, loud and clear, CHANGE THE NAME!
