It’s that time of the season again where the world will witness the spectacles of the most popular, glamorous football tourney in the globe after the World Cup, the UEFA Champions League beginning on the 16th of September. One won’t dispute the fact that it’s a fantastic journey because it contains all the drama, the glitz, the glamour, the flair, the touchline brawls, the unpredictability, the comedy, the controversies and so forth. Who will forget the 2005 final whereby Liverpool had to come back from 3 goals down against A.C. Milan to eventually clinch it through penalties. And who will as well , forget the 1999 final where Manchester United had to clinch the trophy from the jaws of Bayern Munich courtesy of coming from behind and scoring 2 goals in the injury time (Solkjaer). One is looking forward to see some African footballers adding a touch of African glitz in this tourney, notably Sulley Muntari (Inter Milan), Manucho (Manchester United), Michael Essien, John Mikel Obi and Solomon Kalou (Chelsea), Seydour Keita and Samuel Eto (Barcelona), Tony Taiwo (Marseille) and so forth. Fortunately, Mzansi has two representatives in the form of Bryce Moon, who recently joined Greek Champions Panathinaikos, who are in group B, and Siyabonga Nomvete, who plays for Danish team, Aalborg in GroupE. If one has to make a wish for this season’s Champions League, is not to witness another semi-final containing three teams from the English Premiership, it’s becoming monotonous although one appreciate the strength of the Premiership, one needs a little spice and some breath of the fresh air hence one wish that one of the four teams who are making their Champions League debut (Cyprus champions, Famugusta FC, Romanian champions, CFR Cluj, Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg and the Belarus champions FC Bate) to reach at least the semi-final stage in order to add that unpredictability that the Champions League always contains.
