Kaizer “Boy Boy” Motaung

In advance of an August 1968 exhibition between the North American Soccer League’s Atlanta Chiefs and Santos, an Atlanta Constitution editorial cartoon by Clifford “Baldy” Baldowski mentions Chiefs star Kaizer “Boy Boy” Motaung. The South African, invited to play for the Chiefs due to apartheid-era strictures, in 1970 would found Kaizer Chiefs of Soweto to honor his NASL sojourn.

Sundowns has a lot of MOOLA!

Sundowns has a lot of money and they are happy to flaunt it, but they contribute very little to SA football . Motsepe is running an expensive footballer recycling business by buying 30- something year-old players from overseas leagues like Ndlovu, Zuma and Monterio. The amazing part of all of this is that this is happening under the watch of Ted Dumitru who is always preaching development. The concept of development is not just limited to academies, but going out there and scouting for talent and moulding it. That is how players are discovered. That is how Teenage Dladla and Lesley Manyathela came forth. Sundowns will never discover a star, they will recycle discovered stars. That shortcut unfortunately is detrimental to our football. The Sundowns of old used to discover stars, the likes of Mambush, Ewie and Bennet Masinga, and merge that with quality signings like Chirwali, Phil Masinga and Zane Moosa. But today they buy 15 players. Ted Dumitru must never again utter the word “development” again.

“Ref, I’m not offside!”: The Offside Rule for PSL players

Diagram:

This is offside because the red number 10 is in front of all of the defenders, leaving only the goalkeeper back which isn't enough players to play him onside. This position may have been forced by the defenders moving forward in what is called the offside trap.

A player is in an offside position if:
· he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent
· A player is not in an offside position if:
· he is in his own half of the fi eld of play or
· he is level with the second last opponent or
· he is level with the last two opponents

Free Kick Specialist?

If you thought David Beckham or Roberto Carlos were the sole set-piece specialists, think again; Long before these world stars came into picture, Jomo Sono was a master of direct free-kicks. Very likely you missed this great Pirates player, but Teko Modise is here to replay those magic moments. Born in Soweto, but spent most of his playing career in Limpopo playing for the now defunct Ria Stars and City Pillars, respectively. Modise has a fantastic first touch, and the ability to split defences open with pin-point passing. His moments of magic, however, don’t detract from his knack of keeping things simple – something the PSL seems to lack, incongruously enough. He was voted Mvela Golden League Player of the Season while playing for City Pillars during the 2005/2006 season. In 2008, he became the inaugural PSL Footballer of the Year. Modise was recently appointed ambassador by global company McDonald's for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The Football Association Coaching Book of Soccer Tactics and Skills

By A Customer

This is the football associations offical book and it is easy to see why. The skills and tactics in this book are clearly explained and have been devised over a number of years. There are hundreds of diagrams illustrating how practices should be organised, along with key factors to look for in all skills. The book is very old as the photos clearly show, and the author has a reputation for long ball football. However the book is more concerned with direct football and the basic skills all players need.

Excellent value for money , I have one other book , that I thought was worth the money , but page for page, this book is superb.

Age Cheating is still an issue eMzansi

Hola baf’wethu! I’m concerned about Mzansi (SA) when it comes to the age issue for our players. Players in Africa are physically well-built, that’s true, but they also cheat when it comes to their age. But players eMzansi are no different from their brothers on the continent and it is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately. As far as I know, the problem starts at school level, where a school coach asks students to give false ages so they can play in a younger age group. Sorry baf’wethu, but you think you are cheating us, hence you cheat yourself. I think that’s why players like Shoes shine against the so-called ‘young stars’ - they are almost the same age!

TK’s Prediction for Phunya Sele Sele

Hello Celts - “It brings tears to my eyes to see us going thru this rough patch. What is happening with our players, I think even my grandfather can do better than most of the current players. Why are they doing this to us maar... Kea le wena Sele!

Celtic’s biggest rivals - 2008/09 Season

Celtic vs. Free State Stars: this would certainly favour the Celt.
Celtic vs Sundowns: tough but possible, provided Sundowns are not comin' from a defeat.
Celtic vs Chiefs: with home ground advantage it should be easy; they might take their second game to Durban but the Celts enjoy themselves in Durbs, so still possible. Well what can I say; it would be nice to beat them. I bet they will change their coach after that. hehe.
Celtic vs Supersport United (champions): Not too worried...I am not convinced that Gavin has settled at Supersport so this will still work in our favour.
Celtic vs Orlando Pirates: I did not enjoy our last game against them, but yeah, we will win this one even if they take it to their backyard it will work in our favour.

What happened to the Nicknames in the PSL?

Mara what happened people? Amajita (my friends) in my neighbourhood are concern about how our stars are not honoured today! Players of the olden days had nicknames which made them tick – the likes of 'Black Prince', ‘16v’, ‘Ace’, Jerry ‘Legs of Thunder’, ‘Shoes’, Mthakathi, ‘Cash & Carry’, ‘Mazinyo’, ‘RoadBlock’. I wish we could create new names for our players in the PSL. So many players have done well, but don’t have nicknames. To get the ball rolling, my friends came up with one nickname, which was proposed after the Supersport v Sundowns game on Saturday night – Daine ‘The flying phepha’ Klate.

email the editor on proffesor.khumalo@gmail.com if you have any great nicknames for our PSL players. Let’s get this ball rollin’ baf’wethu!!!

Schalkwyk on the right track

Kaizer Chiefs attacking midfielder, Gert Schalkwyk, is finally enjoying life at Naturena. However, coach Mushin Ertugral is demanding more from the young player who is on top form at the moment for Amakhosi. Schalkwyk’s record in the MTN8 Wafa Wafa is 3 goals in 4 games. Ertugal admits he is pleased with Schalkwyk’s form as well as the whole team’s effort, despite going down 1-0 to Swallows at Olympia Park on Sunday. Ertugral thinks that Gert can still do better. “Schalkwyk is finally doing what is right. He knows what is expected of him. He clearly understands his role as a team player,” Ertugral told Sunsport.

Chiefs VS Pirates: The fight for Mthembu to end

The two powerhouse giants of Soweto; Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are in a bitter row over Siphelele Mthembu as each team claims he has signed with them. The tug-of-war between Chiefs and Pirates over Mthembu is likely to come to an end when the Premier Soccer League (PSL) makes its ruling next week Monday. However, it is also alleged that Mthembu first signed a pre-contract with Pirates while playing for Maritzburg City in the Vodacom League and then changed his mind and signed a three-year deal with Amakhosi.

Beijing is over – finato baba! Next stop Mzansi (South Africa)

Just as the 2008 Olympics has been China's "coming out" party, the 2010 Fifa World Cup will be Africa's chance to show off the continent's strengths. That was the message from a Fifa-South African team of officials at a special media briefing in Beijing last week Thursday. How do you see South Africa? How does the world see us? Join in the conversation. ... Sokka (Football) is the most widely played sport eMzansi!

2008/09 PSL – Get ready for War!

PSL coaches will have their eyes fixed on the top spot of the league table. The 2008/09 PSL is about to start and already coaches are under pressure to deliver to their managers and supporters, especially for those teams who didn’t do well during the off-season competitions. Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Supersport United (defending champions), Ajax Cape Town, Free State Stars and Moroka Swallows spent a fortune on bringing players of note into their bid to compete for the championship. However, it won’t be easy as everyone is targeting to pocket the R10 Million at the end of the season.

PE to HOST: Are SAFA sick or WHAT?

Bafana will play Nigeria at a ‘condemned’ venue in Port Elizabeth. SAFA and the Bafana technical team appear to be headed for a collision over the choice of PE as the venue for next week's crucial African Nations Cup qualifier against Nigeria. SAFA CEO Raymond Hack has justified the decision to play the game in PE while hardly explaining the bizarre paradox in the thinking between South African soccer’s controlling body and the PSL. Hack, however, says the PE municipal authorities and those in charge of the PE stadium had given SAFA an undertaking that “everything will be in place on September 6.”

Can Modise be the player to save Bafana against Nigeria?

Orlando Pirates midfielder and PSL Footballer of the Season Teko Modise produced a superb performance to help Bafana Bafana draw against Australia in an International Friendly played in London on 20 August 2008. Modise, who is no longer a regular at Pirates was operating in a strange wide position in the Bafana colours. However, Teko showed why he won PSL Footballer of the Season award with a grand performance and to add to that he scored a dynamic equaliser that made Bafana draw 2-all against Australia. After this superb display can we say Teko is the player to save Bafana on 6 September 2008 when they face Nigeria – the “Super Eagles”? Sundowns progress to the FINAL

Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the final of the MTN8 Wafa Wafa Cup despite going down 3-2 to SuperSport United in the second leg on Saturday night. The game had all the ingredients of a Pretoria derby - the yellow cards and the red cards - and of course the goals, 5 to be precise. This was a game Trott Moloto and the Sundowns supporters won’t forget for a very, very long time after Lerato Chabangu rescued the Brazilians with a thunderous strike in the last minutes of extra time. Sundowns and Chiefs made the MTN8 Wafa Wafa FINAL, despite both teams losing during the weekend.

Lucky Amakhosi Edge Through

Kaizer Chiefs are through to the MTN 8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns even though they lost 1-0 to Moroka Swallows in the second leg semi-final game yesterday. Chiefs went into the game walking on a high after their extraordinary 2-0 win last weekend against Swallows. Birds’ new striker, Ryan Botha, scored the only goal of the game, while Jose Torrealba received his marching orders for a punching Vinicius Da Silva in the second half. However Amakhosi managed to hold the Birds despite losing... and book themselves a ticket to the final.
