The
Nedbank Cup quarter final draw held today in front of a cheering crowd at the
Carlton Centre, downtown Johannesburg produced mouth-watering fixtures as the
fans saw their teams edging within touching distance of the coveted R7 million
first prize.
The
draw comes after a thrilling Round of 16 clashes which saw African Warriors,
Bloemfontein Celtic, Mamelodi Sundowns, Maritzburg United, Kaizer Chiefs,
SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits qualify for the
quarterfinals.
The
Premier Soccer League (PSL) CEO, Brand de Villiers said: “We are looking
forward to what we hope will be an exciting 2013/14 Nedbank Cup quarterfinal
fixtures. I would also like to thank our sponsors, Nedbank whose incentives
this season have added an extra dimension to this competition.”
The
tournament continues to live up to its reputation of providing a platform for
rising stars to shine while producing spectacular goals, each goal worth R 10
000 going towards a R 1 million target to build a multi-purpose sports facility
for school in the country as part of the Goals4Goals campaign in partnership
with the Sports Trust. To ensure that the target is achieved, the top goal
scorer per round receives R 10 000 for himself as well as an additional R 10
000 and a soccer kit for a school of his choice anywhere in South Africa.
Nedbank
also utilised the draw event to remind everyone and specifically to encourage
budding soccer stars to register for the Nedbank Ke Yona team search when
registrations open on 01 April 2014. The
bank is once again calling on men between the ages of 18 and 35, from all corners
of the country to register for the provincial trials which start soon and will
enable ordinary South Africans from all walks of life, such as taxi drivers,
engineers, students and accountants to prove that anyone can be
extraordinary. The Nedbank Ke Yona team
search has already unearthed talent from across the country-some now signed to
PSL teams. The bank committed to making
the team search a key feature of the Nedbank Cup going forward.
“Once
again, the Nedbank Cup is testimony that no matter who or what the opposition
is; guts, determination, and being part of the right team can help you achieve
the seemingly impossible. As a bank for all; Nedbank will continue to partner
and empower communities, current and future stars with the resources and skills
they require to make their goals happen.” said Sydney Mbhele; Divisional
Executive for Group Marketing at Nedbank.
