Talking Point: Defensive Crisis At Pirates!

Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa is facing a defensive crisis at Bucs ahead of the league clash at Orlando Stadium Saturday night against Bloemfontein Celtic.

1. Rooi 'Ngubo' Mahamutsa is nursing an injury he suffered against SSU in Attredgville where he dislocated his elbow. The medical reports released to the media by the team initially said Mahamutsa will only miss the Maritzburg United clash.

2. Siyabonga Sangweni and Patrick Phungwayo are on long term injuries.

3. Happy Jele will be suspended for the Celtic clash and that leaves Bheki Ndzunga as an option for the right back. Many will argue Ndzunga's capabilities since the Meluti Saga but the last time the lad played an official competitive game was In Lubumbashi against TP Mazembe where captain Lucky Lekgwathi was red carded in the first 20 minutes of the game.

My talking point in the Pirates defense crises stems from last season when coach Roger de Sa was appointed. The first thing the coach did was to drop Lekgwathi and opted for the Sangweni-Mahamutsa combination in the heart of our defense.

The combination was working well until Mahamutsa suffered a torn achilles injury which kept him out for almost the whole of last season. The captain was brought back in to partner Sangweni. They did well until Sangweni Suffered a long term knee injury fortunately Mahamutsa was back so he stepped in to partner Lekgwathi.

This season the captain was on the starting berth until Sangweni recovered. He was dropped like a hot potato to be replaced by Sangweni who found himself nursing torn achilles within two games of his return.

The Captain was sidelined because of his controversial media outburst where he claimed he doesn't blame the coach for his exclusion; he knows there are sinister forces who are out to get him... so Gcaba had to step in to partner Mahamutsa in the heart of defense.

Jele was suspended for the 2nd leg of the Final in Cairo the team had no choice but to call the captain back to the squad. We lost the final and had a week's break of FIFA Calendar. Our first game after the CAF Final was the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout. Lekgwathi was on the bench but came in later to replace Mahamutsa who dislocated his elbow.

Now you know it’s not easy to coach a big team like Pirates. There are many challenges on n off the field... Roger That!

Roger de Sa is a better tactician than Stuart Baxter

How life in South Africa can quickly change if you an Orlando Pirates / Kaizer Chiefs Coach - Not so long ago Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa was being judged cos he is a South African who is young and of what he did with the previous teams he coached.

Dr. Irvin Khoza saw potential in him and he stuck by him and look at him today… now we Bucs fans worship him. All now Roger de Sa has to do is win trophies and other than that his tactics are the best.

And next door; Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has finally shown he is just an Englishman who can't manage a South African team; his tactics make some of the Chiefs players look ordinary yet they are not... and most fans see behind his so called "transitional football" that it’s just one of the big English words he has been hiding behind. He is the reason why the Soweto Derby (Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates) has so many draws... he is no longer Sir Stuart Baxter,  but CV-Cooker (one Chiefs fan said).

If you think Roger de Sa’s tactics (Tiki Taka) are bad then you need help. If you think there is nothing wrong with Stuart Baxter’s tactics (transition what-what) then there is something really wrong with you.

Roger de Sa is a better tactician than Stuart Baxter!!

The Double Standard of the PSL Disciplinary Committee

Double standard is a rule or principle which is unfairly applied in different ways to different people. I have lost confidence in the slanted, illogical and inconsistency verdicts of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee.

They are a lot of ambiguities regarding injudiciousness decisions already taken by the committee. The committee lacks fairness and egalitarianism when handing down judgment.

Mabhuti Khenyeza by then at Ajax Cape Town was convicted of swearing and spitting at a match official, Zakhele Siwela. Khenyeza was suspended from all football activities under the auspices of the League for a period of 12 (twelve) months. However, there is no strong evidence that Khenyeza swore and spattered at Zakhele Siwela except hearsay evidence already presented.

The judgment handed down to Khenyeza was harsh taking into consideration the weight of his transgression. Khenyeza has appealed the PSL Disciplinary Committee inconsiderate decision.

Kaizer Chiefs defender Morgan Gould has been banned for just two meagre matches for punching Bidvest Wits striker Getaneh Kebede. The unsporting action was shown live on the national television. Many soccer pundits anticipated that Gould will be sidelined for a lengthy period after being charged with assault. However, he will only miss just two mere matches, while also having to part with R50 000.

Khenyeza was handed down severe judgment for light offence whilst Gould was handed light sentence for severe offence.

What’s your view on the inconsistency decisions handed down to Khenyeza and also Gould despite difference in a nature of offence?

An Open Letter To Kaizer Chiefs Coach Stuart Baxter

Dear Mr. Baxter,

In one of my letters on Laduma, I did highlight the fact that your persistence with Kingston Nkhatha will be your downfall and this seems to be happening now.

Mr. Baxter you failed dismally with Bafana Bafana and your appointment at Naturena really raised some eyebrows but we gave you the benefit of the doubt.

Yes you won us the Premiership and the Nedbank Cup, but your favouritism demoralized the fighting spirit of the players; players like Siboniso Gaxa, Morgan Gould, George Lebese and Kingston Nkhatha can do no wrong in your eyes.

Poor Eric Mathoho who won you the league had to make way for the erratic Gould who has proven to be a liability these days. Saturday’s game against Platinum Stars was a last straw where you threw Lehlohonolo Majoro who is at the low levels of confidence at the deep end, why didn't you pair him with Knowledge Musona really baffles me.

Did you see the supporters leaving before the end of the game? That has never happened in ages, Sir. Get your act in order and stop telling us about transition football and switching on-off or else leave our beloved team in peace!

PSL Disciplinary Committee Outcome

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee met tonight, Tuesday, 26 November 2013.

The PSL Disciplinary Committee deliberated on the case involving Kaizer Chiefs player, Morgan Gould who had been charged with assaulting Bidvest Wits player, Getaneh Gibeto at the FNB Stadium, on 09 November 2013 in a match between Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits. Gould pleaded guilty to the charge.

The PSL DC handed the following sentence:
•           Gould was suspended for two matches with immediate effect.
•           The player was fined R100 000 of which R 50 000.00 was suspended for 12 months on condition that he is not found guilty of a similar offence.
•           Gould must submit a written apology to Gibeto within seven days. The apology will be published on the League’s website.
•           Gould was ordered to personally pay for the costs of the DC sitting

•           Kaizer Chiefs must submit proof of payment of the club’s internal fine on the player within seven days.

We won't win any cups under Roger de Sa

I for one still say we (Orlando Pirates) won't win anything under the guidance of Roger de Sa. Most of the fans are confusing me giving this man praises while he has brought back the glorryless days, our tag as chokers is back once again thanks to this man.

We had three trophies before him; we lost the league to Kaizer Chiefs, MTN8 to Moroka Swallows, and Telkom Knockout to Bloemfontein Celtic. This year Carling Black Label to chiefs, we lost in the finals of 2 major cups MTN8 and CAF Champions League.

So should we praise him for this mediocrity? Yes we did reach the CAF Champions League final, we drew a lot of our games from the group stages to reach the final, yet we claim we are the best?

We don't have strikers; Lennox Bacela only scores from close range, tap ins and close range headers, he is not an aggressive and deadly striker but he is a costly striker, he lacks composure in front of goals and doesn’t even create goals. He doesn’t even mark… he walks in the park like Tiger Woods.

We won’t win anything under this man.

TKO final Tickets on sale

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced that tickets for the 2013/14 Telkom Knockout (TKO) Final between Platinum Stars and Orlando Pirates are now on sale.

The PSL has also confirmed that the final, to be played at the Mbombela Stadium, will kick-off at 20h15.

Tickets can be purchased at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers countrywide at R60 for adults and R15 for children under the age of 12.

This price includes park/ride fee. More information on park and ride to follow.

Can Mathoho make it as a striker?

I know strikers and midfielders who became defenders in the late part of their careers, but I can't remember any defender converted from defence to be a striker in the Premier Soccer League.

I remember:

Mac Batchelor – striker turned defender at Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows
Gary McNab – striker turned defender at Moroka Swallows
Paulus Masehe – striker cum defender at Free State Stars
Bongi Macala – striker cum defender at Santos
Patrick Mayo – striker cum defender at Kaizer Chiefs
Daniel "Sailor" Tshabalala – anchorman cum Central defender at Orlando Pirates
Neil Tovey – anchorman cum Libero at Kaizer Chiefs
Tebogo Langerman – left winger turn left back at Mamemlodi Sundowns
Bryce Moon – right winger cum right back at Wits University
Bradley Carnell – left winger cum left back at Wits University
Lucas Radebe – goalkeeper cum midfielder cum defender at Kaizer Chiefs

And many more…

Now there is a possibility that Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter will convert his defender Eric “Tower” Mathoho into striker supporting role. He has good height for aerial balls but I’m not sure about his composure and goal scoring techniques as he already score minimal goals in his career.

Do you think Baxter is doing a right thing for converting Mathoho as supporting striker or are we blowing that late substitute of Mathoho as supporting striker out of the proportion?

Nike Football Unveils 2014 Brasilian National Kit

Nike today unveiled the new Brasil National Team home kit at an event in Rio de Janeiro.  The kit, which will be worn by the hosts next summer, combines performance innovation, cultural design cues and environmentally sustainable materials.

"It is a great honor and it fills me with pride to present the new shirt of the Selecao to the fans in Rio," said Luiz Gustavo of the Brasilian National Team.

ULTIMATE IN COOLING AND COMFORT
The kit aids performance by regulating player body temperature over the course of match. By using a combination of Nike Dri-FIT Technology, “burnout” mesh and laser-cut ventilation holes, designers are able to localize cooling where players need it most.

Nike Dri-FIT technology pulls moisture away from the skin to the outside of the garment where it evaporates more quickly. Laser-cut venitilation holes and engineered mesh in key areas where heat is generated allow for increased breathability and airflow across the skin.

“By managing sweat and keeping the body cooler longer, players feel more comfortable, sweat less, and perform better,” said Martin Lotti, Creative Director for Nike Football.

In addition to keeping players cool, the kit is made with a new dual-knit fabrication that incorporates cotton and recycled polyester for the best in moisture wicking properties, while adding a softer feel and more flattering shape.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
In line with Nike’s commitment to superior performance with lower environmental impact, the shirt, short  - and for the first time in a national team kit, the socks - all feature fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. (100% recycled polyester in the shorts, 96% recycled polyester in the shirt and 78% in the socks).  Each kit is made using an average of 18 recycled plastic bottles. Since 2010, Nike has diverted almost 2 billion bottles from landfills, enough to cover over 2800 full-sized football pitches.

“Incorporating environmental sustainability is a key part of the design and development process for us,” said Lotti. “Our aim is to create a kit that performs for players and is good to the planet.”

PERFECT FIT
Designers utilized three dimensional body scans of the entire Brasilian National Team to collect data on the form of today’s players and identify an updated fit, improving comfort and allowing the body to move more naturally within the kit.

While looking at every element of the modern football kit, Nike designers even paid special attention to the kits’ socks.  Combining athlete insight and research with new materials and fabrications, the Nike Elite Match Fit sock for 2014 features a sleeker fit specific to football.  Strategically cushioned zones provide comfort and protection at the big toe and anklebones where the majority of impact occurs, while arch support locks down the foot to prevent slipping.  Material was also eliminated to enhance touch and decrease bulk, and flex grooves were added to the ankle and the top of the foot to prevent any bunching.

NIKE PRO BASELAYER
The new Nike Pro baselayer is the lightest ever from Nike and features increased venting and breathability.

Players have a variety of Nike Pro baselayer styles for players to choose from.  These are designed for the varying temperatures and conditions athletes will encounter in Brasil, which are expected to vary from high heat during mid-day matches, to much colder temperatures in the southern match locations during evening games.

Nike has redesigned its baselayer short for 2014 taking insights directly from some of the best players in the world.

“When we asked players to talk about the kind of protection they need during a match, they showed us scars and abrasions on their upper-back hip area from sliding,” recalled Lotti.  “Several players showed us these same injuries so we set-out to add more protection, while balancing the need for lightweight and breathability.”

The result is the Nike Pro Combat Ultralight Slider Short.  Featuring increased and adjusted protection to match the athlete’s sliding pattern, the short is also 20% lighter than previous versions and made with 87% recycled polyester.  Weight was eliminated through the addition of mesh for increased breathability and cooling where the athlete generates heat.

‘SOULFUL’ DESIGN
Captivated by the unique creativity of Brasil, Nike’s design team sought to reflect some of its unique and distinct cultures  in the new National Team Kit design, while staying true to the culture and tradition of the yellow jersey.

“The Brasilian home kit is like a national flag; it symbolizes the country and its people,” said Lotti. “We wanted to create a fusion of the high speed brilliance of football and the culture of Brasil while staying true to what the home kit represents.”

The jersey features a new Y-neck design that provides both a relaxed fit and comfortable look.  After body scanning each member of the Brasilian National team, Nike designers utilized player body scans and their own insights to develop a neckline that maximizes comfort and great fit.

The Brasilian crest has also been updated.  A gold colored metallic weave was added to the crest for a shimmering effect, and the 2014 crest is slightly larger.  Behind the crest, on the inside of the jersey, is a printed slogan “Nascido para jogar futebol”- Brasilian Portuguese for “Born to Play Football”.  Nike has also worked with Brasilian Designer Bruno Big to deliver a unique and nationally relevant mark of pride at the inner back neck of each jersey. The home kit features a small yellow canary motif representing “Canarinho”, the nickname given to the team when they wear the yellow home jersey.

"To wear the 'amarelinha' is an honor for me and my teammates," says Brazil star Neymar. "Brasil is a very special place to play football, and we want to play hard and win for our country.  This kit helps us to do that with both the technology and the inspiration it provides.”

The shorts are a classic Brasilian Varsity Royal with a white stripe.  Simple and iconic, the fit is slimmer and more tailored to the body, with a cut specifically designed to aid movement and comfort. The center back of the shorts feature Nike’s signature laser vents to aid in cooling and allow for moisture management.

Even the name and number on each kit have been carefully designed, with micro fine pinholes for moisture management and cooling, and a fluorescent outline to aid visibility. The style of the name and number is inspired by the classic fonts widely used on Brasilian hand printed street posters.  All jerseys worn by players and sold in Brasil are made in Brasil.

The Brasil kit is now available in Nike stores and on nike.com for pre-order from November 24th and will be for sale worldwide from December 5th.

Orlando Pirates: Senzo Meyiwa or Fatau Dauda?

The war of words between Ghana soccer fans and Orlando Pirates soccer fans.

The war of words between Ghana and Orlando Pirates soccer fans has erupted in the social networks. Many Ghana soccer fans believe that Fatau Dauda should be given a fair chance to play ahead of Senzo Meyiwa to boost his chances to represented Ghana in the forthcoming Brazil 2014 FIFA world Cup whilst Orlando Pirates fans believe that Senzo Meyiwa has matured as a goalkeeper and was behind the Orlando Pirates success in the African Championship Cup after bravery performance against TP Mazembe. They believe that Meyiwa is now the spine of the team at the back. Pirates fans are saying “why fix it if it ain't broke” which means replacing of Meyiwa now is not necessary due to his heroic performance.

Currently, Pirates and Bafana second choice keeper Meyiwa is the best goalkeeper in Africa alongside the Stade Malien and Mali second choice goalkeeper Soumbeila Diakite who is well-known for stopping May Mahlangu and Dean Furman penalties in the 2013 CAF Champions League. Meyiwa and Diakite did well in the Champions League and Confederation Cup. The two goalkeepers are nominated for the best African player of the year based in Africa.

The goalkeeper should be selected based on merits than reputation. Meyiwa has done well for Orlando Pirates to deserve a first choice goalkeeper. Just like wine, Meyiwa is maturing over time. Meyiwa needs more game time to build confidence towards ousting Itumeleng Khune as Bafana number 1 but he needs to improve on aerial ball, ball distribution and positioning techniques to be overall the best keeper in the Premier Soccer League.

Dauda lacks of game time was exposed in Egypt. He had abysmal game by his standard especial dealing with aerial balls. His confidence was low throughout the game. He needs game time to improve his goalkeeping techniques. He is one of the best keepers in the continent but currently Meyiwa stands the head and shoulder above him. He is not a second choice keeper at Pirates but a 3rd Choice keeper behind young Brighton Mhlongo with a bright future ahead of him.

Pirates spent close to R5 million rand to acquired Dauda’s service but it would be a good idea to loan him back this January to any Ghana team with guarantee first team action until the end of the 2014 FIFA World Cup so that he can gain more confidence to improve his goalkeeping techniques for the sake of his international career.

Dauda is an international goalkeeper who deserves week and week out first team action than occupying the famous Mark Mayambela seat on the stand.

The following cases will appear before the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee on Tuesday, 26 November 2013.

SuperSport United: The club has been charged with watering the pitch at the Lucas Moripe Stadium from 12h30 until 12h50 on 19 October 2013 prior to their match against Moroka Swallows FC – a period which falls within the “Match phase” of a fixture when pitches may only be watered with the prior consent of the match commissioner which consent was not obtained on 19 October 2013 as required.

Morgan Gould: During the League match played at FNB Stadium, on 09 November 2013 between Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits, the player unlawfully struck an opposing player of Bidvest Wits, Getaneh Kebede in the face. The player has been charged with assaulting an opposing player.

Is Bafana game against Spain a Match Practice or International Friendly game?

I have perused the bible of soccer called the FIFA Laws of the Game to make well informed statements accompanied by empirical evidence. It is a 148 valuable pages worth reading by any soccer fans across the globe.  The following information was extracted from the FIFA Laws of the game governing our football.

 In the official FIFA competition
According to the FIFA Laws of the game 2013/2014, up to a maximum of three substitutes may be used in any match played in an official competition. Every soccer fan knows about this rule which is applicable to any league and competition match in South Africa under SAFA. Amateur organised leagues also applied this rule of 3 maximum substitutes in a game.

International match practice
FIFA Laws of the game 2013/2014 clearly stipulated that in the international match practise, the rules of the competition must state how many substitutes may be nominated, from three up to a maximum of twelve. However, the following condition must be adhered to:
·         The teams concerned reach agreement on a maximum number of substitute(s) from 1 to 12.
·         The referee is informed before the match about the agreed number of substitutes.

International Friendly Game (Bafana Bafana vs Spain)
Main Criteria for an International Friendly game to be included in the list used for the calculation of the ranking.
1.     Observance of the Laws of the Game as issued by International Football Association Board (IFAB) and published by FIFA.
2.     In accordance with FIFA statutes, the main referee and both assistants must be listed on the current FIFA list of international referees.
3.     It is not compulsory that the fourth official be included in the FIFA list of international referees
4.     The referee and assistant referees shall be from neutral country.
5.     Only six substitutions per team can be made during the match.

Spain Contravene the Law 3
1.     Spain contravened the rule on Category A by renegade from agreed six substitutes allowed to be used.
2.     The referee was informed during the game about the 7th substitute which is contravened a rule which stated that the referee must be informed before the game.

Conclusion
1.     The Bafana and Spain game qualified to be downgraded to an international match practice from International Friendly game.
2.     Players will not awarded caps or ranking points to Bafana.
3.     The results of the game will be null and void and won’t be recognised by the FIFA.

According to the Circular no. 1324 issued last year on the 25th October 2013 directed to the Members of FIFA on FIFA/Coca Cola World Ranking. Matches can be retrospectively removed from the list of matches used to calculate the FIFA/Coca Cola World ranking if the Laws of the Game have not observed.

No need to await FIFA confirmation as FIFA Laws of the Game, rule 3 was contravened deliberately by Spain on the 80th minutes to avoid humiliation and embarrassment by the defeat but maybe FIFA will feel pity for Bafana recognizing the game as International Friendly Game.

Currently, Bafana and Spain game do not fulfill the requirements of the International A game which means no caps or ranking will be awarded in the game.

The case closed!

The 3rd World War of Words is looming between Chiefs and Pirates fans

Another Spectacular derby is imminent in the Telkom Knockout Cup Final which is going to be played in the Mbombela Stadium on the 07 December 2013. The possible final between South African giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will be the best and early Christmas present to the loving soccer supporters in South Africa. However, the finals between the PSL strongest team SuperSport United and Platinum Stars will also be another great final.

Personally, I want this possible derby final to settle the scores between fuming and bitter Pirates and Chiefs fans who are forever attacking each other with unpalatable, insensitive, reckless, distasteful and regrettable words using social networks.

Pirates fans are still angry and bitter that Kingston Nkhatha illegitimate goal in the 1 Kilometre offside position was allowed to stand due to the assistant referee Enoch Molefe's vision blunder of failing to spot that Nkhatha was miles ahead of the Pirates defence.

The TV replays showed that Nkhatha was offside to denied Orlando Pirates 3 maximum points in the bag. The same Molefe allowed Lehlohonolo Majoro offside goal to stand too in the Carling Black Label. Pirates fans strongly believe that Molefe is in the Chiefs payroll.

Chiefs fans are angry and disappointed that Daniel Bennett gave Pirates dubious and soft penalty out of nothing in the second leg of the MTN8 to push Pirates into the MTN8 final, Chiefs fans strongly believe that the "brown envelope" was inserted underneath the Bennett hotel door to fix or manipulate the game outcome.  Chiefs fans in the social networks clearly expressed their angers on so called match fixing at Orlando Stadium during the MTN8 second leg.

The TV replay showed that it was legitimate penalty but many referees would have not taken such harsh decision to award a soft penalty in a game of that magnitude. Many soccer pundits believed Daniel Bennett gave Pirates cheap victory on the silver platter.

The rival between Chiefs and Pirates fans will be infinite as they are bragging rights at stake. This rival makes the Soweto derby one of the best in the world. Players are doing the talking on the field of play whilst fans will be doing the talking in the stands.

The atmosphere of the derby is always vibrant but the atmosphere in the sold out Mbombela Stadium will be out of this world if Pirates and Chiefs qualify for the Telkom Cup Final but they need to pass over the stubborn, unpredictable and on-form  United and Stars.

Football is unpredictable and anything is possible.

PSL Disciplinary Committee Outcome

The following cases appeared before the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee.

ITUMELENG KHUNE and KAIZER CHIEFS
The player was charged with displaying a religious slogan under his shirt during Chief’s fixture against Orlando Pirates on 26 October 2013.

The club was charged with bringing the League into disrepute. Both parties pleaded guilty and the player and club were each fined R25 000.00, suspended for 12 months. The player was also ordered to furnish a written apology. Khune and Kaizer Chiefs were ordered to pay the costs of the sitting.

AFRICAN WARRIORS
The club was charged with a contravention of the provisions of the Football Manual after they failed to submit the team-sheet on time during their NFD fixture against Chippa United on 01 November 2013 at Phillipi Stadium. The club paid an admission of guilt fine of R5 000.00.

In another matter involving African Warriors, the club was charged with contravening provisions of the PSL Compliance Manual after their representative and a media officer failed to arrive on time for the pre-match meeting ahead their fixture against Chippa United. African Warriors paid an admission of guilt fine of R5 000.00.

VELI MOTHWA
The player was charged with signing a football contract with two clubs at the same time. Due to Mr. Mothwa lodging an appeal against the DRC ruling in this regard, the matter was postponed pending the appeal.

BLACK LEOPARDS
The club was charged with failing to have the requisite medical personnel available prior to and at the start of their fixture against Thanda Royal Zulu FC on 02 November 2013 at the Seshego Stadium. The club paid an admission of guilt fine of R5 000.00.

Spain, the World Champions are learning too...

One of Spain's national team’s key game features is pressing high with sustained intensity. Then, if the possession is regained the same intensity is immediately transferred to the new attacking action.

That's how they started the game last night and I had my own reasons to believe that their strategy may not work under the circumstances. When after some 20 minutes into the game, Andres Iniesta was just walking - while his team was defending - it was clear that I was correct in my prediction.

It is impossible for any team that plays at altitude without being adapted to such condition to sustain the heavy task of pressing high with intensity for the whole game. Consequently, Spain switched to 'ECONOMICAL' pace mode and their game became ordinary.

It's obvious that Spain's usual game concept cannot be successful without pressing high with intensity and they've learned that the hard way. When in the second half the effects of altitude began to impair their tactical judgments, more individual errors cancelled their chances to score and fortunately they did not concede more goals.

Bafana Bafana took a decisive advantage of Spain's problem and won an important match. Surely, there are other interesting aspects but more next time.

Roger de Sa and Pirates have daunting task ahead of them

Congratulations are in order for Orlando Pirates reaching the continental lucrative finals of the CAF Orange Africa Championship. It was an excellence and gallant performance to come up second in a group A consist of the African Club of the century and 7 times CAF Champions League winner and defending champions, Al Ahly, 5 times Champions League winner, Zamalek SC, and the defending champion of the African Confederation Cup, Athletic Club Leopards de Dolisie, from Congo.

Orlando Pirates was in a group of Champions but they came out of the group of Death with victory which is an exceptional achievement but winning silver medal in the competition as runner up to the champion of Champions Al Ahly was a bravery and heroic achievement.

Orlando Pirates has been honoured by Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, and the President South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee SASCOC Gideon Sam for an excellence performance in the African voyage which justified that excellence is not negotiable and will never go unnoticed. Orlando Pirates team of 2013 deserves to be bestowed with an order of Mapungubwe represents ingenuity and excellence achievement in South Africa.

Orlando Pirates was the most active club in South Africa as they already played 17 games in the past 4 months. However, the score card of the 17 games is uninspiring. In the last 10 games of the African Championship since July 2013, Orlando Pirates won 2, lost 3 and drew 5 games. Orlando Pirates managed to score 9 goals and only conceded 8 goals due to the strong wall of Rooi Mahamutsa and the company coupled with Senzo Meyiwa bravery.

In the league games, Orlando Pirates only played 3 games, won 1, lost 1 and drew 1 which is a fair enough results taking into consideration excessive travelling to Africa for CAF games. Fatigue and anxiety were behind this fairly impressive form in the domestic league. Roger and the boys were always thinking about African victory than to do well in the league based on the different performance displayed in the two different competitions.

In the MTN 8, Orlando Pirates was runner up to Platinum Stars after penalty shoot-out with 1 victory and 3 draws in the tournament. The win and lose from penalties are not considered as it is an acceptable and recognised international standard to reflect only on either 90 minutes or 120 minutes of the game results but penalties are part of the game.

The overall score card to this end, reads 17 games, 4 Wins, 9 Draws and 4 Loses. Despite bravery and heroic performance in the African Championship Cup, the overall performance of the Orlando Pirates this season was less impressive. Roger de Sa has an intimidating task to turn the table around. He has to motivate his boys to overcome two consecutive defeats in the Finals.

Orlando Pirates has already lost out in the PSL richest tournament MTN8 after surrendered in the battle against Platinum Stars but in the African Championship Cup, it was so near but yet so far. Orlando Pirates bow out of the tournament as dignified and respectful failure without the main accolade. Victory is winning and failure is losing according to the adopted principles of football.

Roger de Sa has to work on the players mental state to turn the table around in the domestic league and cups. It is not going to be simple for players to easily overcome the grief of defeats in the finals but they have to continue with the task at hand and the first task assigned for Pirates is against SuperSport United in the Telkom Cup this weekend at Lucas Moripe Stadium to turn the table around but it would be a difficult task as United are very good playing at their own backyard and only lost 1 game at home 2 months ago against the Dube Birds (Moroka Swallows).

Despite losing the two finals already, Roger de Sa and his boys need to switch on to focus on the domestic league but they must remember that things work out best for those who make the best of how things work out whilst Success is not final, failure is not fatal but the courage to continue that counts. Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

After the final whistle at an ecstatic Stade de France, members of the French National Team - Franck Ribery, Blaise Matuidi, Yohan Cabaye and Raphael Varane - unveiled the new French National Team home kit to be worn in Brasil next year. Combining the best in performance innovation with insightful design details, the new French kit captures the innate style and national pride of France with a sophisticated look.

ULTIMATE IN COOLING AND COMFORT
Aiding performance by regulating player body temperature over the course of match is a primary focus for Nike’s design teams. Utilizing a combination of Nike Dri-FIT Technology, “burnout” mesh and laser-cut ventilation holes, designers are able to localize cooling where players need it most.

Nike Dri-FIT technology pulls moisture away from the skin to the outside of the garment where it evaporates more quickly, and laser-cut holes and engineered mesh in key areas where heat is generated allow for increased breathability and airflow across the skin.

“By managing sweat and keeping the body cooler longer, players feel more comfortable, sweat less, and perform better,” said Martin Lotti, Creative Director for Nike Football.

In addition to keeping players cool, Nike is utilizing a new dual-knit fabrication that incorporates cotton and recycled polyester for the best in moisture wicking properties, while adding a softer feel and more flattering shape.

“Incorporating environmental benefits is a key part of the design and development process for us,” said Lotti. “We consider every aspect of product creation across our supply chain, including waste, chemistry and water usage outputs to create a kit that performs for the players while bing good to the planet.”

PERFECT FIT
Designers used three dimensional body scans of elite footballers to collect data on the form of today’s players and identify an updated fit, improving comfort and allowing the body to move more naturally within the kit.

While looking at every element of the modern football kit, Nike designers also paid special attention to the kits’ socks.

For 2014, Nike will offer a variety of Nike Pro baselayer styles for players to choose from.

“In addition to providing the best in performance innovation, our aim is to celebrate the spirit of each country our kits represent,” said Lotti.  “We looked at what French players were wearing off-pitch, and they favored a classic, hand-crafted kind of style.  We wanted to reflect this and give players that same level of luxury and same idea of tailored fit.”

The fabric detail of the French National Jersey is inspired by the story of Nîmes, a town in the south of France. Nîmes was the birthplace of modern denim, and the fabric takes its name from the town (literally ‘de Nîmes’). Nîmes is historically known for its textiles and patterns and the landscape of Nîmes is said to have inspired today’s rugged denim as well as the silk shawls worn throughout Europe in the 18th century.  This paradox between raw denim and elegant silk mirrored Nike designers’ desire to create a beautiful design aesthetic for the French home shirt.

“The Nîmes fabric story inspired us to use the twill texture and 45 degree angle of classic denim combined with a focus on beautiful craftsmanship,” said Lotti.

The design team spent time refining the home kit’s collar focusing on comfort and beauty. The collar and side-hem also feature a selvedge-like accent.

The crest features a new design inspired by the 1958 crest and reflects players’ feedback of wanting to “feel the history of our country”.  The cockerel-design has been enlarged, freed from its badge and given the space to again become the ultimate symbol of French national pride. It's also beautifully embroidered just above the heart and on the bottom of each player’s number, and a flag is placed on the inside of the neck on each kit.

“Representing France is the ultimate honor,” said Blaise Matuidi.  “When we play it is for our fans and our country – we want to make them proud. The new home kit is a symbol of French elegance with the technology that will help us perform at our best in Brasil.”

The shorts are a classic white with venting to assist in cooling, and a cut specifically designed to aid movement and comfort.  Simple and iconic, the fit is slimmer and more tailored to the body based on fit research with a cut specifically designed to aid movement and comfort. The center back of the shorts feature Nike’s signature laser vents to aid in cooling and allow for moisture management.

The French National Team kit will be available Dec. 5, 2013 at Nike stores and on nike.com.
