South African supporters should start supporting their local clubs

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 | Wednesday, November 30, 2011

There’s always that small matter of poor attendances at matches - 9 out of 10 times the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and clubs take a chunk of the blame... yes, I agree, those two are partly to blame...

However, we, the fans, supporters and followers of PSL should shoulder the majority of the blame. We need to be honest with ourselves, we do not attend matches as much as we discuss football, and even when we do attend we do not show the support as much as we brag about the teams we support.

Another main issue is the people from places like Khayelitsha, Nongoma, Eastern Cape, Tzaneen, Pella, Nzhelele, 'Hammanskraal' etc. These people are busy supporting Gauteng teams like Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns for example, yet they have teams from their regions, or teams within close proximity of their area.

If people can suddenly support Manchester City, why can’t they dump Pirates and support AmaZulu? What happened to regional pride? Are these people not proud of their region? How come they celebrate individual talent, yet cannot celebrate a collective?

Are they aware that they are hypocrites? I urge anyone from these regions and many more to take a hard look at themselves, and ask themselves if their invested support to Gauteng teams is doing justice to South African football!

If people stuck to their roots, they wouldn’t be hurt by statements made by some individual who reminded them that they are not part of the family.

Chiefs fans must lead the way and stop all this social declension. Stay out there and do your part because we will not let you come back where you first took off. No time for baby sitting old youth. Cheer up your team in good and bad times, see them turn tables. Don't cheer them with your thick heavy hearts, say "love and peace" like you mean it. Do not pretend to be a fan be an aren't fan period, Pretoria teams need to be reminded one or two things so let's do that then we can come home and be like Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy on Life movie.
