Hello and welcome to Friday, the best day of the week. Admit it, Friday is your favourite day right? I’m sure it is.
Okay, there’s not a lot to say today, just a few updates before our MTN8 game against Ajax on Saturday. A full preview will be available tomorrow morning for that game. For now let’s talk about what happened yesterday.
So just on Wednesday before our game against Swallows, on ‘Robhethi’ Marawa’s Metrofm show Bobby was complaining about the poor attendance of matches by Amakhosi fans, he cited twitter and facebook as one of the problems, I’m not sure if he did that because he genuinely believes it is the reason or he’s just recently discovered twitter.
Because if the latter is the case then someone should tell him we can also tweet from mobile phones and mobile phones are allowed at stadiums. So I don’t think social media should be blamed here unless of course they have a problem with us breaking club news on twitter before the club does.
For those who aren’t on twitter, join twitter, it’s fun. Next thing you should do is follow the @Amakhosi_fans account and the club’s official twitter account @Kaizer_Chiefs. If you like, you can always follow me on @khosiblog, but be warned, I tweet a lot.
Ok now that we are done with that bit, let’s get on to real news. Yesterday in a MTN8 pre-match press conference, Vlad V told everyone how disappointed he is that we are not attending matches. To be honest, I’m guilty because I haven’t attended our first two games of the season, here’s what he said:
“Maybe Chiefs supporters in Johannesburg are like small children who like to stay indoors rather than watch games. We changed our home ground from Rand Stadium to the FNB because most supporters were complaining of transport problems, but still they are not coming. Maybe we are not playing good football, but in Polokwane and Nelspruit we have had better attendance.I don’t know, maybe the Johannesburg supporters will also come in our next games.”
I’m not too sure I agree with him singling out Joburg fans, but I totally agree with him in that the attendance has been poor of late. I can’t make excuses for everyone but I do think the weather in recent times has played a big role in this and the clubs we’ve played against don’t really have that many fans. For stadiums to be full, opposition clubs need to do their bit, but we also have to attend games.
Another problem, or maybe thee problem is that clubs get a lot of money from PSL TV rights. Every PSL club gets paid every month for broadcasting. So why would some clubs encourage people not to watch games on TV when they get paid for it? Until this is addressed and transport issues are sorted out, this will be a problem for many years to come.
My suggestion is, if the PSL wants us to attend games, they need to increase the amount they are charging for PSL Broadcasting rights so that Supersport/SABC/TopTV can only pick a small number of games to broadcast, that will make people go to stadiums, they will have no other choice. But as for now, there are way too many games available to watch for free on TV.
There’s a lot to say about this, maybe I’ll write a detailed post some day, but for now, let’s ditch TV for tomorrow and go support our boys at FNB Stadium. If you wish to add your comment about this issue, please feel free to do so on the comment section.
AmaKhosi 4 Glory!
