For me 2010 is far more than any individual. It’s only a collective that can make it a success. Maybe I need to state categorically that I am neither a Cosmos fan nor supporter. The only thing that I know for sure is some people, within a collective, can make us proud come 2010. To my mind come a couple of names, amongst them Ehpraim Matsilele Sono.
From all I know Ephraim is a Jewish name, and there is nothing much I know about it. His nickname is "Jomo" after Jomo Kenyetta (President of Kenya), meaning a 'burning spear'. The name was given to the 10 year-old Sono by "Rocks" Mthembu, a former Orlando Pirates top class player and founding member who saw a strong leader who could emulate Jomo Kenyatta in Matsilela.
Jomo is known to many as Black Prince, Prince of Soccer, King of African Soccer, Troublemaker, Heartbreaker, Banana-boy, Maestro, Truth Commision, Time-bomb, Thata-machans, South African legend, Spoiler, Kans vatter, Big "J", Big "M" and many others. For one to have so many names says something, if not a lot.
Jomo was born in Orlando East in Soweto, near Johannesburg, on July 17, 1955. He was brought up by his grandmother and blind grandfather in a tiny Soweto home. His father, who died when Jomo was 8, had been a local soccer great and played for Orlando Pirates, I am told. His late father, Eric "Scara" Bamuza Sono, was a renowned Orlando Pirates midfielder in the 1960s, so he indeed was born of a soccer family.
