English Premiership coaches merry-go-round

Just when you thought the merry go around of coaches exist predominantly in the local (Mzansi) premiership, however, it is, as well, very much prevalent in the English premiership, where the number of coaches resign, as opposed to being fired or forced to resign like in S.A. Contrary to S.A, No such thing as “we’ve hired a Technical Director to assist you where possible” or “resign because your safety is not guaranteed”. Professionalism is overemphasized in the English premiership .The functions of the Technical Director are clearly defined in the job description, interference is not tolerated, in fact, does not exist at all .The coach is allowed to manage the team completely, hence the term manager is used, is opposed to coach. He oversees the whole training programme, Take care of the player’s needs and behaviour on and off the field, manages the transfer budget of the team and so forth.

The sudden increase in the coaches merry-go-round in England is influenced by the following factors. Pressure to break the dominance by Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal, Huge investment made by foreigners in the English premiership goes with high expectation of winning to justify those investments. Pressure is on to managers to get results in order to placate those foreign owners who obviously make huge salaries and budgets available for them. Fear of relegation, because dropping to the lowest division affect a team’s revenue (T.V rights deals) dramatically.

At the beginning of the season, it was Chelsea first, who came with a new manager, Felipe Scolari, after firing Avram Grant, who the team thinks he failed them by not winning the league, the F.A Cup and the champion’s league, hence they employed a coach with a big reputation with a mandate to win the champion’s league, cause that’s one trophy that is missing from Roman Abramovich achievements puzzle.
