Bucs fans seek revenge against Chiefs

Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol put his cards on the table on Wednesday, stating that his priority was winning the MTN 8 quarter-final clash against Ajax Cape Town at Ellis Park next week and that his team would only use the Telkom Charity Cup as preparation for the kick-off of the new Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.

Krol said he wanted to set the record straight in Rustenburg on Saturday when Bucs and Chiefs clash in their second Soweto Derby within 10 days in the second Charity Cup semifinal.

But he added it would not be a train smash should Pirates not get through to the final of the annual Charity tournament that opens the PSL season.

Bucs were beaten by Amakhosi in a sudden death penalty shootout in the Vodacom Challenge semi-finals in Port Elizabeth last Thursday night and Pirates fans are hoping for revenge.

Chiefs went on to win the final by beating ambitious big spending English Premiership giants Manchester City 2-0 in the final at Loftus last Saturday.

Bucs, however, had the satisfaction of beating City in the opening Challenge clash played in Polokwane.

"Obviously we want to beat Chiefs and that is where we are focussed," Krol said on Wednesday.

"We will try and do better than we did last week. We played badly in the first half and did well in the second but lost on penalties.

"We made mistakes against Chiefs last time and we have been working hard trying to rectify them at training.

"But the bigger game is the MTN 8 match (against Ajax). I will be using the Charity Cup to bring back my four Bafana Bafana players (striker Katlego Mashego, midfielders Teko Modise and Benson Mhlongo, and defender Innocent Mdledle) and give them game time.

"They were given a rest after playing in the Confederations Cup last month and now need to get more time on the pitch."

Krol stressed that he would have to nurse his four Bafana stars this season.

"We have a tight PSL programme this season due to the 2010 World Cup finals in June. Not only will there be pressure on all players during what will be an even more competitive PSL season but the international players have a lot of matches as well.

"I will have to manage them carefully but it will not be easy."

The fact that the quartet will feature is good news for Bucs fans who are hoping their side will retain the Charity Cup title.

And Krol said that his two new strikers, Gert Schalkwyk and Dennis Masina, could also get some game time.

Schalkwyk was injured when he joined Pirates from Chiefs in the off-season and has just returned to full fitness, while Masina has recently signed from PSL champions SuperSport United.

Krol said that he had no regrets letting former Bafana midfielder Lebogang 'Cheeseboy' Mokoena leave to join Mamelodi Sundowns who play Platinum Stars in the first semifinal on Saturday.

"I released him because I have better players in my squad," Krol said, adding that veteran Zimbabwean international striker Gilbert Mushangazhike had also left and had joined newly promoted Mpumalanga Black Aces. - Sapa

Do Kaizer Chiefs need Putco Mafani?

In times like these, the only thing we desperately need is an inspirational PRO!

With the likes of Siphiwe Tshabalala, David Mathebula, Mandla Masango, Tinashe Nengomasha, Itumeleng Khune and Mthokozisi Yende liking the roars of the supporters and in the process mesmering opponents!

What will it take to have an extravagant mood around Khosi games similar to those experienced during times of Mafani (Former Kaizer Chiefs PRO) and abo Shakoane?? Kaizer man this team is too big to ignore the needed flair, do something!!!

by Khosi

Moeketsi - Guys, I think Bra Kaizer should get this guy back. What do you think Makhosi??

Ndaba - Its very painful to see him, he deserves better.... Chiefs is in his heart which is what is important... these days, you can't even tell whether we have a PRO or not.... I realy miss Putco.... I wish Bra K. can give him a second chance like Sundowns did to Alex Shakoane... PUTCO IS A KHOSI FOR LIFE... I have nothing against Thebe but he doesn't fill Putco's shoes.....

Nokuthula - I fully agree!!!

Moeketsi - I also agree that Putco should be given his job back at Kaizer Chiefs, we miss those dance moves, the vibe, the energy and the laughter.

Obakeng - Thebe is gone people, long gone. Definately Putco must return to Chiefs.

Tebogo - I think every1 deserves a 2nd chance. But I discourage getting rid of Thebe. There is enough room 4 the 2 at the KC family.

Getron - Guys you are right, he is a good entertainer.

Zhitovic - PUTCO Must cum back, period ! 8sh, did u see dose kwasa-kwasa dance lst week we won da derby? Mr Motaung, pls giv da guy anada chance, we need him.

Ambrse - No way, whether he's an entertainer or not. He mus't cum back Thebe is doin a gr8 job.

Can Bhakajuju do it this season?

Are the Sea Robbers up for the League Championship this season (2009/10), and what about the Continetal Championships?

Last season was marked by ups and downs, we lost matches we didn't have to. We finished strongly and were menacing in some of the games.

We did not score as many goals as would have been necessary to secure the Championship when goal tally was the difference.

Are we going to commit the same errors this season, given the shortness of the season and continental responsibilities, are we upto stratch?

No prayers, neh Orlando Pirates must raid the trophy cabinet this season, and be the only Southern African team to have annexed two continental championships this season!!

Emmanuel Adebayor Makes Manchester City Debut - The Interview

Kaizer Chiefs vs. Manchester City Highlights – Vodacom Challenge Final

Kaizer Chiefs' Coach Vladimir Vermezovic Honoured After Manchester City Win

Kaizer Chiefs' coach Vladimir Vermezovic was delighted with his side’s Vodacom Challenge Final victory over Manchester City.

25 Jul 2009 17:20:56

A goal from Jeffrey Ntuka in the closing stages of the first half gave Kaizer Chiefs the Vodacom Challenge trophy they last won in 2006 when they beat City’s rivals, Manchester United, in the final.

“It was a great game, we are honoured to play two games against Man City in one week, especially when you see the quality of the players they had on the field,” Chiefs' coach Vladimir Vermezovic said.

“This tournament was very important for us, but our work has just begun. This was a good test for us, the main point being that we wanted to build the fitness of our players. But I think the fans enjoyed the experience.”

City manager Mark Hughes was magnanimous in defeat, reiterating that the English Premier League club were delighted with their time in South Africa.

“I would like to congratulate Chiefs, I thought they played exceptionally well today,” Hughes says. “We had quite a lot of possession, but they restricted us to just a few chances and they are worthy winners of the trophy. We wish them well in the coming season.

“For us it has been a fantastic trip, we have made a lot of friends and we have really enjoyed every aspect of your [South African] life. We hope to come back soon.”

Top 5 Series: Stereotypes of South African football and fans

By Kwest from TEAM KICK OFF (http://www.teamkickoff.com/)
These are the top 5 stereotypes of our beautiful country sponsored by a true soccer fan.

The views expressed are sorely my opinion and you can feel free to comment.

5) Signing players only after 2 games:
Players from lower divisions know that getting a contract from a top team is very easy; it only takes them 180 mins to have Bobby Motaung, Floyd Mbele and others calling them right after the game. The sad reality here is most of those players are average and teams realize that after the 1st session but pride wont let them release them. Come end of the season most of those players are transfer listed. I think Mthokozisi Yende should take some advice from Gordon Gilbert.

An average player signed only after 180 mins.

YOU ARE NEXT!

4) Kaizer Chiefs - Love, Peace and WAR!
Amakhosi fans wear the love and peace badge so proudly for everyone to see. When Chiefs win the whole country rejoices; SA becomes white and gold. But when they lose, all breaks loose; true colours fly out the window then stadium chairs, vuvuzelas, bottles and even toilet papers fly around like rain and confetties. And to make things worse their Chairman, Manager, Marking officer and No1 striker joke about it on the dinner table.

True colours are showing.

3) SuperSport United - Membership upon DSTV purchase.
SSU is the most consistent team; on a good day they can thrash the big guns by huge margins - Chiefs and Sundowns would know, they play beautiful football. But when they score only 300 DSTV subscribers are cheering them on the grandstands. SSU games are so empty, The whole stadium can hear Coaches swearing @ Men as if they are little boys. With the introduction of DSTV compact, supporters thought they would pay half the fee, but to their suprise SSU allows them to watch only the 2nd stanza of the match, hence you see the a few more ppl on the stands 2nd half.

DSTV Subscribers.

2) Orlando Pirates - The shining "star" above the rest!
In 1995, Pirates achieved the impossible by winning the Champions League when no one gave them a chance, even my drunk die hard Pirates uncle. But they did, in that event becoming the only SA team to win the cup. Fast-forward - 15 years later, Pirates has not won an official trophy since Lesley Manyathela passed away. But Believe me, when the love in war hoodlums (Chiefs), DSTV compact (SSU - Melusi alone), Soweto kings (Moroka Swallows) compare titles they won in taverns, OUT COMES A PIRATES SUPPORTER with the Champions League star!!!

Try having a decent argument with a Pirates supporter, chances are he might be too drunk to understand, toothless, or you are afraid to comment because he was in jail for murder or r!pe... and if he senses that he's losing OUT COMES THE STAR.

Pride and joy of Pirates Supporters.

1) SIWELELE SA MASELESELE...
They win cups; they sing, they win games; they sing, they draw; they sing, the lose; they sing, they get trashed by the rivals; they sing louder, they get relegated; they sing, their team is useless; they sing, the Owner and Coach give contradictory instructions which confuses players; they sing, Celtic owners fire a Coach, they arrange a meeting and sing till the coach gets reinstated, next season they will be relegated....and guess what; THEY WILL SING. I dont blame them coz with a team like that; I WILL SING TOO.

Pirates pay the penalty

Sapa

Kaizer Chiefs edged out arch rivals Orlando Pirates 4-3 in a penalty shootout, after the teams were drawn 1-1 apiece after full time at a freezing Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Thursday night.

The victory ensures that the Amakhosi will play Manchester City in the final of the Vodacom Challenge at Loftus on Saturday at 3pm.

It was one of the most dramatic penalty shootouts between the two Soweto giants and had the 30 000 crowd on the edge of their seats.

Both goalkeepers Moeneeb Josephs and Itumeleng Khune did their best to psyche their opponents in the shootout. Bucs paid the penalty by missing three and having one saved. Chiefs missed two and had one penalty saved. The winning penalty was scored by Rooi Thabang.

Despite changing over 1-1 at the interval, Amakhosi had the better of the first half. Chiefs took the initiative from the opening whistle and were rewarded when Josta Dladla made it 1-0 after 10 minutes when he latched onto Abia Nale’s defence splitting though ball and fired his shot into the far corner giving keeper Josephs no chance.

Josephs kept the Buccaneers in the game with two breathtaking saves from a rocket from Knowledge Musona and a powerful Mandla Masango strike in the 13th and 20th minutes respectively.

Josephs did well on both occasions as Chiefs threatened to overrun the shell shocked Bucs. Then Pirates captain Lehlohonolo Seema was wide awake to head away cross from Musona as Lawrence Molekwane rose to head home the cross from close range on 29 minutes.

But from the breakaway Chiefs were caught flat footed and live wire Dikgang Mabalane found Malawian international midfielder Josephy Kamwendo who beat keeper Itumeleng Khune with a sweet shot to make it 1-1 against the run of play.

Josephs did well to deny hard working Masango a goal on the stroke of halftime with another fine save.

Amakhosi started well at the start of the second half but it was Bucs newcomer Andile Jali who forced Khune to make a smart save in the 55th minutes as Bucs hit Chiefs on the counter attack. Both coaches made a number of changes to try and find the winner but the second half was a lot closer fought that the first 45 minutes with Bucs putting Chiefs under pressure and enjoying more possession.

Chiefs seemed to lose the drive and rhythm they had in the first period. Josephs was a virtual spectator in the second half.

The one surprise on the Chiefs team sheet was the absence of striker Kaizer Motaung junior who was booed by the fans in Durban on Tuesday night where Amakhosi were beaten 1-0 by City. Motaung junior was not even among the substitutes name by coach Vladimir Vermezovic.

But the Serbian coach said he would be rotating his players. With neither side taking any risks it was no surprise when the match went to the dreaded penalty shootout. It was chaotic outside the stadium before the match and the unhelpful traffic officials made a bad sitiation into a circus.

One can understand why the 2010 Local Organising Committee and Fifa were reluctant to use this venue for last month’s Confederations Cup. Fifa and the LOC are going to have to come to the Windy City and show the locals how it is done with major soccer matches otherwise PE should forget about hosting any World Cup matches in 2010.

But the new stadium itself is fantastic and inside it is world class. However, the pitch gets a black mark as it was bumpy and below Fifa standards.

Manchester City players pay tribute To Mandela CCTV-International

Manchester City players met Nelson Mandela on Thursday, wishing him a happy 91st birthday at his office in Houghton and gave him a club shirt. Manchester City are currently in South Africa for a pre-season tour to play local teams Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

On Thursday they took time out from training to meet South Africa's former president Nelson Mandela at the Mandela Foundation office in Houghton. It was obviously a great pleasure for all the players who presented the former president with a club shirt in commemoration of his 91st birthday last Saturday.

Mandela then chatted with the players and admitted that despite being regarded as one of the greatest political figures of his time he could also put his foot in it!

The players were then individually introduced to Mandela, who was was surprised by the youthful looks of Robinho. City will continue their tour in South Africa.

Krol looks beyond derby, but not Chiefs

Mazola Molefe

Amakhosi’s new coach still needs to figure out what our game is about

ORLANDO Pirates coach Ruud Krol will have the league title in his sights this season after narrowly missing out in the last campaign.

But his counterpart at Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs, Vladimir Vermezovic, is still using pre-season tournaments to suss out South African football.

Krol will use such events to amend his mistakes, with the hope of clinching the league title at the end of the shortened season.

The two teams clash in the Vodacom Challenge tomorrow at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth. The winner will face Manchester City in the final match of the tournament on Saturday.

The derby could provide a clear indication of who, between the two coaches, would have shaken off pre-season jitters in time for their club’s first PSL game next month.
Pirates finished second in the PSL, being beaten to the title by Supersport United on goal difference.

And although it was a season without silverware, Bucs were rewarded with a spot in the African Champions League.

The Buccaneers have made six signings, with Dennis Masina still to be confirmed a Pirates player. After their 2-0 win against City on Saturday, they look set for dominance in the PSL.

The “mighty” Amakhosi, winners of MTN8, have their work cut out though. Led by a new coach after Muhsin Ertugral was shown the door, this spells another “rebuilding” phase for Chiefs.

Vermezovic has already bagged a trophy after the Phefeni Boys, who have signed seven players for the new season, won the Eastern Cape Premier’s Cup early this month. The Serbian coach says the draw against Iran two weeks ago gave him “an idea of which players could be regulars when the season kicks off”.

Here’s a look at some of the potential match-winners in the derby tomorrow:

Pirates’ key players
Andile Jali: Given the free role, the Benedict Vilakazi look-alike former Pretoria University player could trouble Amakhosi on the night and in more derbies to come.

Phenyo Mongala: He announced his arrival with a brilliant curler against City. He also gave Chiefs skipper Jimmy Tau a torrid time in the Nedbank Cup while turning out for Pretoria University last season. If Krol uses that type of mind game in this game, it could pay dividends.

Chiefs’ key players
Knowledge Musona: Striker Musona has the advantage of speed. If he doesn’t become injury-prone, the goal ace’s stay at Amakhosi could be pleasant. This may be a decent outing for him against Pirates.

Mthokozisi Yende: AmaTuks former player, who has missed all three of Chiefs’ pre-season games. A great passer of the ball and midfield genius, what better team to make his mark against than Bucs.

Bucs slam dirty tricks ... despite fans’ late rally to move to third spot

22 July 2009
Linda Moreotsene - moreotsenel@sowetan.co.za

BUSY : Kaizer Chiefs team manager Bobby Motaung

CANVASSING : Orlando Pirates spokesman Mickey Modisane

HELPING THE NEEDY : Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates fans will rally behind their teams in support of charity.

Despite their fans’ late rally to claw back into the top four, Orlando Pirates have slammed “the dirty tricks” employed by some clubs to garner votes for the Telkom Charity Cup.

Soweto giants Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs – who were respectively in third and fourth place late last night – were earlier in danger of missing the pre-season charity tournament, which had AmaZulu, Mamelodi Sundowns and Platinum Stars as front runners.

By last night, the two top spots had still not changed, although Chiefs and Pirates had improved their positions, while Sundowns had been relegated to fifth.

Bucs’ spokesperson Mickey Modisane claims the votes are not a true reflection of supporters’ backing and that some clubs were rather having people make countless calls to the voting lines in order to get their teams to qualify.

“Let us be honest here – people are killing the spirit of the tournament and those doing this should think about match day – whether there will be bums on seats to reflect all those votes at the stadium,” Modisane said.

What concerns them most, Modisane said, was the potential loss of R3million in gate-taking revenue, which charity organisations stand to lose if both Chiefs and Pirates do not qualify.

The two Soweto giants enjoy enormous support throughout South Africa. The two teams are capable of filling any venue to the rafters. Their support also goes beyond these borders.

“If you were to look at our votes, you would realise that there is no disparity between the SMSs and the phone call votes made – the number of SMSs that our fans had made were close to the number of calls. This tells you that we are going out to our branches and are urging our supporters to make those calls, while others have opted for these tactics.

“For instance, we are presently in the East London area canvassing for support,” Modisane said.

Chiefs’ team manager Bobby Motaung had not returned our calls at the time of going to press.

The Charity Cup will take place at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on August 1.

African Qualifying Round Up

Regular readers of this blog (http://worldcuptoday.blogspot.com/) will know that I always enjoy the African qualifying groups a great deal.

This is mainly because of the big teams ability to mess things up (see Cameroon this time around and Nigeria last time out), because of the frequent accusations of collusion and cheating; and, of course, the general air of chaos that surrounds football in Africa.

So, here's a quick round up of where things stand in qualifying for South Africa 2010.Tunisia (Group 2) and Ghana (Group 4) both look in strong positions to qualify.

Ghana, on nine points and 5 clear of Mali are pretty much already there, judging by the fixtures they still have to come. African Cup of Nations Champions Egypt, who got off to an appalling start in qualifying turned things around last week by beating Rwanda 3-0 in their Group 3 clash.

The return match with Zambia, who currently top the group, will probably decide who wins that group.

Nigeria, who are two points behind Tunisia in Group 2, should be very careful. Mainly because they have to beat the Tunisians in September, but also because football legend Pele has tipped them to reach the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup.

Other predictions from the great man including Columbia to win the '94 World Cup Finals, China to qualify from their 2002 World Cup Group (they were bottom with 0 points and 0 goals); Argentina and France to be finalists in 2002 (neither qualified for even the second round). The list goes on and on!

Kaizer Chiefs 0 Manchester City 1: Hughes stays calm after Fergie taunts

By Chris Wheeler reports from Durban

Mark Hughes held back his big guns during a friendly in South Africa on Tuesday night then held his fire when given the opportunity to ignite a public slanging match with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson said Manchester City are unlikely to make the top four this season and Carlos Tevez is not worth the £25million City paid for him.

But, after weakened City's 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs, Hughes said: 'Sir Alex is a person I have huge respect for, but I don't always have to agree with him. Everyone has their own opinion and that was obviously Sir Alex's. I'm sure many people will disagree with him.'

Hughes was equally diplomatic over the issue of Tevez, adding: 'Other people's valuations will be different to ours. We look at the worth they will give to Manchester City not other clubs.'

In game two of City's pre-season tour though, there was again no sign of the big-game strikers Hughes has acquired with the millions handed to him by the club's Arab owners. Nor was there an indication of how he will keep those players happy this season.

No Tevez, apparently rested as a precaution because of an ankle knock, and no Emmanuel Adebayor.

With Roque Santa Cruz sidelined after surgery on his knee injury, and Robinho not due to join his teammates until Friday, tournament sponsors Vodacom could be forgiven for feeling a little short-changed.

'Manchester City's galaxy of stars will add to the considerable list of world-class talent that has already paraded at the Vodacom Challenge over the last 10 years,' proclaimed the official tournament brochure.

In fairness to City, five of Tuesday night's starting line-up could expect to play on the opening day of the season, including Stephen Ireland, who scored the only goal of the game, and at least Gareth Barry made his debut.

Barry, who was booked, said: 'I've signed a five-year contract and I believe in that time I will be playing Champions League football. I was delighted to get a run-out. The main thing was the fitness and to get 60 minutes and come out of it feeling good.'

But it was the appearance of Felipe Caicedo and Kelvin Etuhu in place of any of the strikers Hughes has paid more than £110million to sign over the last 12 months that will have left fans most disappointed.

It was a bit like a tourist who heads for South Africa's game parks in search of lions, elephants, leopards, buffalos and rhinos but instead has to make do with a deer.

That will be of little concern to Hughes, who maintains that his job is to get the team ready for August 15, when City go to Blackburn on the opening day of the season. He could also point out that United had more than a few fringe players on show when they won this tournament last summer.

Victory can be a powerful argument, and a 1-0 win over the Chiefs at least fended off stronger criticism of the City manager's team selection following Saturday's defeat by Orlando Pirates in Polokwane.

But Ferguson was in charge of a settled side that had just secured a Champions League and Barclays Premier League double, while Hughes has a lot of work to do, integrating his new players after another busy summer in the transfer market and not much time to do it.

Challenge set Man City for Chiefs game

2009/07/21

KAIZER Chiefs assistant coach Ace Khuse threw down the gauntlet to Manchester City, daring them to field their strongest side for the second of the Vodacom Challenge matches at Durban’s Absa Stadium tonight.

Khuse said that nobody could read anything into the 2-0 win by Amakhosi’s arch rivals, Orlando Pirates, over a second string City in the opening Challenge showdown at a packed Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.

Said Khuse: “City must field all their big stars against us. We want to beat the real big guns that City have brought out to play in the challenge.

“All credit to Pirates for winning, but they played against a diluted City side. There were not many of their big guns playing. We are appealing to City to ensure they field all their big stars including their new signings (such as Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry).”

City fielded only a couple of big name players such as striker Craig Bellamy, Stephen Ireland and Martin Petrov, against the Buccaneers who were also without their four Bafana Bafana stars, Katlego Mashego, Innocent Mdledle, Benson Mhlongo and Teko Modise, rested by coach Ruud Krol after they helped Bafana finish fourth in last month’s Confederations Cup.

City manager Mark Hughes has spent a fortune so far bringing in England international midfield powerhouse Barry from Aston Villa, Argentine striker Tevez from neighbours United, Paraguay striker Santa Cruz from Blackburn Rovers and Togo captain Emmanuel Adebayor from Arsenal, who signed too late to join the week- long SA tour.

Hughes said Santa Cruz is recovering from an operation and is not likely to play against Chiefs, but both Barry and Tevez are in the frame along with former Jomo Cosmos striker Benjani Mwaruwari, plus the two England midfield stars, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Michael Johnson.

Said Hughes: “We expect a tough 90 minutes against Chiefs and I am preparing for a similar game as we had against Pirates. This is about getting my players into condition and every minute on the field is important.”

Khuse said: “The reason we want to play against the best City have is to gain experience and help us prepare for what is going to be a tough compact PSL season. It will benefit us if City field their best side against us. The result is not as important as getting our squad battle ready for the new season which starts right after the Challenge.

“This Challenge series is a vital part of our pre-season training and we want to face the best both City and Pirates have to offer.”

Chiefs and Pirates will go head to head in the third Challenge clash in Port Elizabeth on Thursday (8.15pm). The winner earns the right to face City in the Challenge final at Loftus on Saturday afternoon.

Chiefs, under new coach Vladimir Vermezovic, are unbeaten in pre-season matches having beaten both Bay United and PSL champions SuperSport United recently in PE and they also held the Iran national team to a 0-0 draw in Bloemfontein last weekend.

Amakhosi will not risk their two Bafana stars, goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and left-wing Siphiwe Tshabalala, who shone in the Confederations Cup.

But Chiefs have a new rough diamond in 20-year-old keeper Thela Ngobeni who starred against Iran. Amakhosi also have a much stronger attack with the signing of former Bafana striker Nkosinathi “Chippa” Nhleko and teenage Zimbabwean striker Knowledge Musona, who will be fighting for a place in the starting line- up against Kaizer Motaung junior, Jose Torrealba and Tsepho Bulu.

Chiefs’ new midfielder Mthokozisi Yende, signed from Pretoria University, is also expected to get some game time against City. — Sapa

THE 2010 WORLD CUP – DOs AND DON'Ts OF MARKETING

The 2010 World Cup is widely being touted as an unparalleled marketing opportunity for South Africa and its business community.

Naturally, however, the commercial potential of an international event of this magnitude is not fair game for anyone to exploit. FIFA, as the "owner" of the event, is at pains to ensure not only that the goodwill and reputation attached to the event are not open to abuse, but that the interests of the official sponsors (in other words those who have entered into agreements with FIFA and who have paid substantial sums of money for the right to have their names attached to the event) are not undermined by "ambush marketing".

"Ambush marketing" is the colloquial term applied to any attempt by a supplier to associate its products or services with an event, despite not being an official sponsor. The supplier uses the event as a platform to promote his brand or product but without making the financial investment and the other obligations undertaken by a sponsor.

In order to combat ambush marketing, FIFA seeks to protect all variations of the South Africa 2010 logo and all the country-specific logos and symbols of all of the previous football world cup events, as well as all previous world cup emblems and pictures or drawings of the FIFA World Cup Trophy and Jules Rimet Cup (the previous World Cup trophy). As at 6 February 2008, the following marks associated with the World Cup had been registered by FIFA as trademarks and/or as registered designs:

• The Official Mascot
• The Official Emblem
• The Official Poster
• 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP SOUTH AFRICA
• WORLD CUP 2010
• RSA 2010
• FOOTBALL WORLD CUP
• FIFA WORLD CUP
• SOUTH AFRICA 2010
• SA 2010/ ZA 2010
• 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP
• SOCCER WORLD CUP
• WORLD CUP
• SOUTH AFRICA WORLD CUP
• ALL NAMES OF ALL SA VENUE CITIES WITH THE FIGURE 2010 BEHIND THEM
• TWENTY TEN / 2010
• WORLD CUP SOUTH AFRICA

Any similar derivatives and/or combinations of any of the above marks.

Apart from the protection afforded by the registration of the names and symbols above as trademarks, legislation has been enacted in South Africa specifically in order to provide protection to the organisers and sponsors of high profile events, like the World Cup, that are inevitable targets for ambush marketing. This legislation includes amendments to the Trade Practices Act, section 15A(1) of the Merchandise Marks Act and the First and Second 2010 FIFA World Cup Special Measures Acts ("the SMAs").

Particular restrictions are imposed in relation to liquor marketing. Section 3(2)(b) of the second SMA restricts the marketing, distribution, consumption and advertising of liquor at a designated stadium or venue to commercial affiliates that have been recognised by FIFA. Therefore, no liquor product produced by anyone who has not been designated by FIFA as an official sponsor (or "commercial affiliate", as it is called in the legislation) may be sold in and/or around any stadium or venue during a FIFA event or marketed within the stadium itself.

While most of the restrictions in the SMAs are related to sale and promotion of certain products in and around the stadia at which World Cup matches are to take place, it should be noted that the use of FIFA's trademarks is restricted no matter where one intends to use them. Any bar or restaurant using any of the trademarks or presenting itself as a sponsor of the event would be guilty of infringing the trademarks and copyright belonging to FIFA.

No-one other than the official sponsors may make use of any of these trademarks in their advertising. The official sponsors are given the exclusive rights to associate with the event, to use the official "event marks", to exposure in and around the stadia, in all official FIFA publications and on the official World Cup website.

While some may regard ambush marketing as simply smart business, the law does prohibit it and any business person seeking to capitalise on an event such as the World Cup should take care to ensure that the limits of what is permissible are not exceeded.

Unauthorised use of the protected trademarks and copyright, or the marketing of products other than those of recognised sponsors at or around World Cup venues could result in hefty fines or even imprisonment.

In addition to the criminal penalties that an offender may face, any "authorised person" may institute proceedings for an interdict or damages. FIFA itself is of course an "authorised person", as is the local World Cup organising committee or "LOC". Subject to the terms of the sponsorship agreement between FIFA and itself, any of the official sponsors would also have the right to take action against an offending party.

All of this does not mean that local businesses will not be able to benefit from the publicity around the 2010 World Cup. The event continues to present a massive marketing opportunity for those who are imaginative in how they promote themselves and their products, while at the same time being cautious not to infringe the legislation.

The FIFA Public Information Sheet, which is a guide to FIFA’s official marks, gives various instructive examples of when FIFA’s marks can safely be used in different applications. The booklet can be downloaded from the FIFA Website. Naturally, FIFA cannot name every single scenario, but the general message conveyed by the examples is quite clear, namely that the publicity around football can be used in a general way to attract customers.

Some examples of legitimate use would be:
• An advertisement using reference to general football terms and imagery does not constitute an unauthorised association unless it makes use of the FIFA and World Cup trademarks and symbols.

• Non-commercial use of the match schedule would not be an unauthorised association. "Commercial use" would occur where a business, not affiliated with the event as an official sponsor, displays its name, branding or logo on the match schedule. It is unlikely that the mere display of an unaltered copy of the match schedule would be considered to be use of a commercial nature and thus would not be problematic.

• Merchandising articles of clothing bearing general football terms and imagery, or terms and imagery relating to South Africa, (or both together) without an associated allusion to the Word Cup, does not create an unauthorised association. In-store decoration with general football-related terms or symbols or terms or symbols related to South Africa, without any reference to the World Cup, would not be prohibited.

Finally, although the Information Sheet does not mention it, there would also probably be no difficulty with an outlet that sells one of the official sponsors' products displaying advertising for the product, issued by the official sponsor itself and bearing the World Cup imagery. This would naturally attract attention to the venue itself, without infringing the sponsor's rights.

In conclusion, there is no question that entrepreneurs seeking to capitalise on the publicity and the influx of foreign visitors that the World Cup will attract, will be able to do so. What is required, in order to do so legitimately, however, is that they be careful not to overstep the mark. All that is required is some ingenuity and a sound understanding of what is legally allowed.

Adidas launches new Orlando Pirates jersey

Posted on 15 July 2009 - 16:03

Adidas, the leading global football brand, today launched the newly designed Orlando Pirates Home and Away jerseys for the coming season.

The launch takes place on the eve of the Vodacom Challenge, which kicks off on Saturday.
The range consists of two new designs: a Home Jersey (black/white) and an Away Jersey (white/black).

The red alternative jersey has been carried over from last season and will be used as an alternative jersey.

The new Jersey continues to reflect the club’s black and white heritage with a touch of red added from the shoulder to the collar and underarm –an innovation that was successfully introduced in 2008.

A Tiro design has been adapted for this new range to reflect the tradition of the Soweto giants by emphasising the famous skull and crossbones-which is emblazoned onto the back.

“Flash a badge with a skull and crossbones on it at almost any South African and they will know you’re talking about Orlando Pirates. This is a symbol which is intrinsically woven into the fabric of South African football history. I want to thank adidas for being able to bring this concept to life in our new home and away jersey.

“From now on wherever our supporters go, they will have 72 years of proud Orlando Pirates history and heritage accompanying them every step of the way,” said Bucs Marketing Manager, Nkosana Khoza.

The jersey was designed using the Tiro template –the same template used in the design of the Spanish national team jersey –following consultations between adidas and Orlando Pirates.

“We are excited by the new design of the jersey and we hope the Orlando Pirates faithful will embrace the new jersey and wear the club’s colours with pride.

We also hope the players will be inspired by the new jersey to reach greater heights this season. As we say at adidas: Impossible is Nothing,” says Zobuzwe Ngobese, the public relations manager at adidas South Africa.

The jersey, designed and manufactured by adidas, also features innovative ClimaCool® technology.

“ClimaCool® is an adidas patented combination of performance fabrics consisting of open mesh and ventilation channels which keeps cool air flowing in and heat and sweat flowing out. It allows athletes to stay dry and comfortable and perform at their peak.

With ClimaCool® apparel, athletes can keep their focus right where it needs to be - on the game” says Kevin Jooste, adidas Category Manager for Football and Team Sports.

The players will wear the 2009/2010 Home jersey for the first time in their opening match of the Vodacom Challenge against English Premiership side Manchester City on 18 July at Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane.

Vodacom Challenge: Orlando Pirates Two Good For Manchester City

The opening game of this year’s Vodacom Challenge ended in victory for Orlando Pirates over Manchester City, thanks to a penalty from Lucas Thwala and a fine long range shot from Phenyo Mongale.

Orlando Pirates 2–0 Manchester City

Orlando Pirates locked horns with Manchester City in the opening game of the Vodacom Challenge today at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. The Citizens have arrived in South Africa to take on the two Soweto giants, Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in the pre-season tournament, to get their side ready for the Premier League season ahead.

Meanwhile the Buccaneers used this game to prepare for their grueling shortened season as well, with a number of new players being introduced in the match from both sides. The fans in the Peter Mokaba Stadium were keen to see the English Premier League side coming up against the Buccaneers, welcoming the players onto the pitch with the vuvuzelas that have become so famous in recent times.

First Half
The game got underway with both teams boasting their new kits for the season ahead in Polokwane. An early chance fell to Pirates, but Stuart Taylor was on his toes and he saved easily. It was obvious from early on that a great deal of the play would take the form of midfield battles between the two sides. A confident looking Pirates side were pushed forward by the Polokwane support, but they struggled to pass the stubborn City defence.

In the 7th minute a quick counter attack from the Citizens almost resulted in a goal, as a cross to Bellamy was just out of reach, but his pressure forced Pirates captain Lekgwathi into clearing dangerously close to his goal line. A few minutes later Lekgwathi had a long range effort for the Bucs, but his shot was off target and did not worry Taylor. A minute later Bojinov should have put Manchester City ahead, as a bouncing cross found the player alone in front of Josephs, but his finish let him down and the Pirates keeper parried. Soon after that scare, a fantastic long range volley from Weiss went agonizingly wide for the visiting English side, before Mahamutsa did well to block Michael Johnson’s diagonal shot.

Taylor looked solid in the City goal, but Pirates were not able to get to the former Arsenal keeper as much as they would have liked. In the 26th minute a mazy run down the left wing caused problems for the City defence, but before he could do anything useful with his attack, Ben Haim did well to poke the ball to safety. Captain Stephen Ireland worked tirelessly in the midfield, leading by example and launching a few dangerous attacks for Manchester City. After end-to-end stuff in the early stages, neither side could find a shot on goal around the half hour mark.

In the 35th minute Pirates took the lead, as the Bucs were awarded a penalty following a foul from Ben Mee on Frank Olivier, and defender Lucas Thwala coolly slotted past Taylor in the Citizens goal. The fans reacted to the goal with celebrations, as the singing and dancing in the stands continued to inspire the Pirates players. City’s reply was a fantastic strike from Bojinov five minutes later, as the striker forced Josephs into a fine diving save to deny the Citizens from scoring.

In typical Bellamy style, the Welshman received a yellow card shortly before the break after constant complaints towards the ref received an official reply. After a few seconds of injury time, both sides went into the break with Pirates in the lead.

Second Half
In the second half of the game, Benjani and Vidal came onto the pitch for Manchester City, while Pirates introduced Kamwendo, Mabena, Mongale and Jali to the mix. Few chances fell to the two sides in the early exchanges, with the new faces trying to gel with those already on the pitch in the first half. Manchester City moved slowly in the midfield, looking as though they were waiting for something to happen, rather than making it happen themselves. Pirates coach Ruud Krol sat on the bench, watching closely and quietly, as Mark Hughes looked disappointed with his charges.

In the 55th minute, substitute Mongale unleashed a fantastically precise shot from the left wing, as his effort floated over Taylor and into the City goal of the post for Pirates’ second of the encounter. A few minutes later Pirates were once again on the attack, but Taylor did well to come off his line and deny the Bucs a third goal. The South African team grew in confidence as time went on, and Manchester City seemed to resign to a loss, with little effort being made in attack.

In the 66th minute the Citizens had a free kick in a dangerous area on the right wing, but the resulting cross saw Pirates clear their lines and go onto a quick counter attack, before Ben Haim put a stop to it. With twenty minutes remaining, Hughes put Nigel De Jong and Felipe Caicedo onto the pitch in an effort to change the flow of the game and get back into it, and it had an immediate affect, with City looking more threatening up front, and the fresh legs helping to dominate possession for the first time in the game. In the 73rd minute Kamwendo came out of nowhere to unleash a fine volley from distance, which Taylor did very well to block.

The vuvuzelas grew louder as full time approached, with the fans sensing that a historic win was on the cards. Pirates did well to regain possession, and pass the ball around in a manner that frustrated the tired Manchester City players. Rather than moving forward, the Bucs held possession in midfield, knowing that holding onto a 2-0 lead was not an impossible task. Despite that manner of thinking, the Soweto side managed to hit the post in the 85th minute thanks to a scramble in the City box and fine work by the Pirates attacking players.

After an entertaining first encounter in the Vodacom Challenge, Orlando Pirates completed a two-goal win over Manchester City, celebrating Nelson Mandela's birthday with a victory for the Buccaneers.

Is this the end of Jabu Mahlangu?

Jabu "Pule" Mahlangu (drunk) and Paulos Masehe (drunk and smoking).

Jabu Mahlangu (formerly Jabu Pule) is currently playing for Platinum Stars.

Pule affactionately known as "Shuffle" or "Ngwana wa Tshwenya" — literally "troublesome child" — to his supporters, for his ability to turn defenders around. It was once said by SABC sport commentator that, when Pule is on song, the opposition dances. He was a crowd puller at his former and first professional team, Kaizer Chiefs.

Although being considered as hugely talented, he has had numerous off-field and disciplinary issues in the past.

Club career
Kaizer Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs was Pule's first club, where he was perennially in trouble for his wayward behaviour but forgiven on countless occasions because of his importance to the team. But Chiefs' officials lost patience with Pule and refused to give him a new contract when it ended in 2004.

SV Mattersburg
His fortunes were no different as he only lasted eight months before he was sent packing. Jabu was asked to leave the club after crashing his car while under the influence of alcohol.

SuperSport United
Twice sent to a rehabilitation clinic to overcome his drinking and drugs problems, Pule was sacked by SuperSport United late 2005 after missing several training sessions.

Orlando Pirates
But Irvin Khoza, chairman of Orlando Pirates, decided to take a chance on the former South Africa international, who has been kicked out at his three previous clubs.

In early 2006, Jabu Pule changed his surname to Mahlangu, the name of his deceased father.

Östers IF
Pule left the country on the 23 June 2008 to Sweden for trails with Helsingborgs IF and fellow Swedish clubs IF Limhamn Bunkeflo and Östers IF after training under the guidance of Farouk Khan at his academy in South Africa.

South African National Team
He represented the South Africa national football team several times and was a participant at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and at the 2000 Olympic Games. during the departure for the world cup, the president of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, was handshaking the payers wishing them good luck and when he came to Jabu he said "Jabu, you must behave yourself".

Stadium workers strike is over

SAfrica: World Cup construction workers end strike

By MICHELLE THERIAULT

JOHANNESBURG — Construction workers have agreed to end a weeklong strike that threatened to derail the completion of already tightly-scheduled projects for the World Cup, union officials and employers said Wednesday.

South African construction workers gather during a protest outside Soccer city on the edge of Soweto, Johannesburg, Tuesday, July 14, 2009. Striking construction workers at 2010 World Cup stadiums have rejected a wage deal made by employers, a union official said on Tuesday. The strike, which began Wednesday, is threatening to derail already tight schedules for construction projects across South Africa supposed to be completed by December.

Striking construction workers stand outside the Green Point soccer stadium in Cape Town, South Africa, Tuesday, July 14, 2009. Striking construction workers at 2010 World Cup stadiums have rejected an improved wage offer by employers, a union official said on Tuesday.

Work on the construction site at Soccer city on the edge of Soweto, Johannesburg remains at a halt Wednesday, July 15, 2009. Construction workers have agreed to end their weeklong strike that has disrupted work on World Cup projects, union officials and employers said Wednesday. A pay increase of 12 percent has been agreed on and work at sites across South Africa will resume Thursday. Workers were demanding 13 percent.

Workers agreed on a pay increase of 12 percent, below the earlier demand of 13 percent, and work at sites across South Africa is to resume on Thursday.

"The strike is over," said Lesiba Seshoka, spokesman for the National Union of Mineworkers. "We got a good offer."

About 70,000 workers began striking last Wednesday, stopping work on stadiums, airports, freeways and Johannesburg's new high-speed rail link — projects that are scheduled to be finished by December. The World Cup football championship is to be held in the summer of 2010.

Negotiations were concluded in the early hours of Wednesday morning and an agreement will be signed at noon (1000 GMT).

Danny Jordaan, the head of the World Cup organizing committee, welcomed the end of the dispute. "Let the construction restart in earnest," he said in a statement.

Workers earn a minimum wage of about $300 a month but some casual laborers can take home less than $100 dollars. Unions have also cited increases in fuel and food costs that are making it harder for workers to make ends meet.

The protests drew wide attention. On Tuesday, at Soccer City, a World Cup finals venue near Soweto, several hundred protesting workers marched around the stadium, brandishing sharpened sticksand singing a Xhosa-language lament about how hard they worked, but how little they made.

South Africa, a regional economic powerhouse, has an unemployment rate of about 25 percent and has also entered a recession for the first time in nearly two decades. The economy has shrunk 6.4 percent, putting pressure on companies, and there have already been hundreds of layoffs.

The new World Cup wage agreement includes concessions by employers on a number of benefits such as annual leave, bonuses and severance procedures.

Mike Wylie, spokesman for the South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors, an employers' group, said management sympathized with workers' concerns.

Wylie, who is also chairman of the WBHO construction company, which had about 10,000 workers go on strike, said the new deal will go a "long way" to improving pay packages. But there was only so far companies can go in boosting wages and benefits, he said.

"It is no good if we are sympathetic and not being sustainable," Wylie said. "If we are not sustainable, a lot of people would lose their jobs."

Wylie said he was confident that builders would make up for a week's worth of lost time. It is important for South Africa to host a successful World Cup and "silence those cynics," he said.

A world-class event would "bring South Africa a lot of credibility and bring investment which would create more jobs in the future."

Ooooh no.... why Nkosinathi Nhleko mara Mr. Bobby Motaung?

Nkosinathi Nhleko was signed by Kaizer Chiefs after his team Thanda Royal Zulu was relegated from the Premier Soccer League during the 2008/09 Season.

NOTE: Also Jomo Cosmos was relegated from the Premier Soccer League during the 2007/08 Season - a team that Nhleko was playing for. Is Nhleko the right man for Chiefs especially after also watching some of the pre-season matches as a Chiefs striker?

Dubandlela
But why should we always take has beens? But Bobby Motaung has no clue in running a soccer team... maybe he should go back to what he was doing before he became the manager.

Johannes
Bobby has issues and he is turning a team we love into a circus every cow will think they stand a chance at Chiefs, lets hope he knows what he is doing…

Zandi
Our beloved team has lost the plot here there 10 young talented strikers in the country right now who are ten times better. The goal issue in this country will never be sorted if we don't groom our development players.

Akhona
Ek rak siek in hierie kak wat Chiefs done, hope they can prove m wrong dis cumin season. Ingathi ngebelungisa nxaaaaa! The history hz proven dat u'l never go anywr with the @ Dubandlela "has beens"

Victor
WHOEVER IS BUYING PLAYERS 4 CHIEFS IS PROBABLY FRIENDS WITH NHLEKO & THERE4 SIGNED HIM OVER A GLASS OF BEER!

Sifiso
Bobby is losing the plot a half fit Ogbonna is better than a fully fit Nhleko.

Lungile
Don’t panic guys Nhleko is a short term signing, clubs all over the world do this. This season is going to be much shorter, and we need a lot of players in the squad. We already have our first choice strikers in Torealba, Kaizer Jr, Bhulu. When one of them is injured, we need an experienced boy to step in for a few games...

Dubandlela
Don’t be fouled we are going to be a joke again.... did you guys see those 3 shots Nhleko had facing the keeper.... ya ne!!!

Hope
Well all I can say is kuzolunga khosi 4 life gents lets give Nhleko a chance.

Tshepo
Guys let's not only focus on the negative aspects of Nhleko's game... What about his runs and strength when in possession??? It's not easy to dispossess him when he's in full flight... all he needs to do is to compose himself in front of goal and the goals will follow... Also, we need his aerial strength in attack because that's one area where we were so lacking in the previous season...

Food For Thought: Emmanuel Adebayor To Manchester City - A Win-win Situation?

Goal.com's Subhankar Mondal casts an eye at the major footballing stories hitting the headlines on Monday in his ‘Food For Thought’ column.....

14-Jul-2009 9:10:10 AM

Emmanuel Abebayor To Man City - Who Gains And Who Loses?

Most Arsenal supporters must be heaving a huge sigh of relief at the news that Emmanuel Adebayor's transfer to Manchester City is imminent. The two clubs have agreed upon a fee and it is likely that the Togolese international striker will agree personal terms with the Citizens in due time. He would be yet another striker in Man City's bag: they have already signed Roque Santa Cruz.

Adebayor's departure to Man City won't be bad for the Arsenal fans, who have lost patience with the 25-year-old. He had one great season in the Premier League (in 2007-2008) when he scored 24 goals and looked to become one of Europe's best forwards, but last season's mediocre and inconsistent performance led many to believe that 2007-2008 was just a flash in the pan.

Surprisingly, Adebayor had been linked with a move to Italian powerhouse AC Milan in the summer but with Milan understandably not in the mood to match the player's wage demands, Man City have barged in and the striker is now on his way to the City of Manchester Stadium.

Emmanuel Adebayor might still go onto become a brilliant player at Man City but at the moment the signing smells of modesty and perhaps lack of helplessness. Manchester City are building a team to break into the top four in the Premier League next season and although the likes of Adebayor and Santa Cruz are Premier League material, signing them instead of some really world class strikers is not an ideal way to prepare for life in the Champions League, is it?

Maybe it is, if you know how to shake it a little, and shake it with a certain Carlos Tevez. The Argentine international has been confirmed to join the Man City revolution at Eastlands and the presence of a world class striker is certainly going to make Man City's bid to become an elite club of English football more credible.

Along with Gareth Barry, Tevez has been the buy of the summer for Mark Hughes and his proven quality in the Premier League is certainly going to enhance City's chances of breaking the quartet-o-poly in the English top flight.

Real Madrid Are Great But Not Invincible
Barcelona are a team, Real Madrid are not yet, argued this columnist in one of his recent columns and Brazilian great Kaka sees the point too. The €67.2 million man admitted on Monday that big name signings do not automatically translate into success and that a lot needs to be done before success can be achieved. Along with fellow Liga giants FC Barcelona, Real Madrid now have the biggest names in the world after completing the signings of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema (as well as Raul Albiol) this summer but as of now they are not a team, only an assembly of star players.

Having said that, you don't necessarily win the Spanish Primera Division or the Champions League with your third rate players, do you? Building a team involves assembling the best available players in the initial stages and now that Madrid have signed some of the biggest names in world football and have strengthened the areas that they needed to, it is now time to mould these players into a team.

Big name signings do not necessarily guarantee success but they do provide you with a chance to achieve success. Madrid might still not be a team but in due time they will be under the tutelage of Manuel Pellegrini. Whether or not this new-look Madrid side can surpass the already teamed-up Barcelona side remains to be seen.
